822.0. "Wildcard Shortcuts" by HYSTER::DEARBORN (Trouvez Mieux) Mon Oct 19 1987 14:14

Here's another question for all you wildcard experts.

I'm fed up with Workbench not displaying all the files on a disk,
just because they don't have .info files. Maybe I'm crazy, but
I would like to take several of my disks and put .info files on
    all the un-icon'd files.

Here is the puzzle: Is there any real easy way to do this? Let's
say I have five files named "file1" "phileB" "fle23" "fyleX" and
"filXYZ". In the same directory, I also have an .info file named
    "file1.info"

    I want to copy "file1.info" to become "phileB.info" "fle23.info"
"fyleX.info" and "filXYZ.info" Is there any 'automatic' way to
do this using wildcards? I know that I could do it one at a time,
but that would take too long.

    Any ideas?

822.1Use ICONedCOOKIE::WITHERSSame Sow, Same Ear, Same Silk, Same PurseMon Oct 19 1987 16:4714
While I use the shell, my wife uses WB to do her directory navigating.
This caused problems because she had trouble finding directories
    without Icons on them.

So, what I did was to put her disk in DF1: and WB in DF0:. I then
ran ICONED (or whatever its called) by pulling it out of the system
drawer, loaded the DF0:SYSTEM Icon with the READ command, hacked the
icon appropriately, and then wrote it out with the appropriate name
(such as DF1:HELEN/CALLIGRAPHY) which created an icon for her
calligraphy directory. Now, she just has to go click on it and its
there. Took me about an hour to do about 10 new icons for new
    directories.

I don't want to create new icons. I just want to copy an existing
icon onto several files in one cli move.

I have not found a single command, but while working on the
FF disks I have found that creating a command file works well.
LIST can direct it's output to a file. I then use an editor to
perform global edits. I'm sure everyone has done this before.

As a side note have you seen XICON. It lets you build working
ICONS for any program or command file.

or use the drew shell to do the trick...a neat foreach feature could
be used...see the dbw start.arc file for some examples...ie
    delete/confirm (called rm), etc...scott
