818.0. "trashcan icon on 500/2000 WB" by BAGELS::BRANNON (Dave Brannon) Thu Oct 15 1987 23:54

according to usenet, the trashcan icon on the 500/2000 workbench
isn't the special kind of icon that it should be. When you select
"empty the trash" it deletes the contents of trashcan AND the
    trashcan icon.

It doesn't work, because we goofed when making the 33.59 Workbench
disk. We put an icon of the wrong type as the trashcan.
The easy solution...Delete your trashcan.info file
(you did that already :-) ), from Workbench, initialize a new disk,
and copy the trashcan from the new disk back to your workbench.
(this will be an old style trashcan, though)

The other solution ... I'll post a uuencoded correct trashcan.info
icon, so your trashcan can still keep lookin' cool.

Snapshot the drawer positions; Workbench will make a new .info file.

And here it is: Cut off the stuff above, cut off the signature,
run through uudecode, and replace your Trashcan.info file with it.

now that you mention it... i'm trying to test the new icon,
can't figure out how to get the "empty trash" menu item
to be unghosted so i can use it. Been spending too much time
in the CLI i guess :-)

    -dave,
Try moving a spare file from your workbench into the trashcan, then
look. Empty Trash should now be normal text.

The trash icon has to be selected for EMPTY TRASH to be unghosted.

I use the trashcan sometimes. I do find the workbench interface convenient for
casual use. Unfortunately it never seems complete - the CLI always seems to be
needed for something. I wish it would be made more complete. As things stand I
am always having to do the CLI stuff for my family.

I like the visual appeal of the Workbench, and my wife won't touch
the CLI, but it is very easy to open a new CLI, with CONMAN active,
from the startup-sequence. I now have a Workbench screen with a
tiny CLI ready for action, tucked away in the corner.

I have an A500 and have used the trashcan to delete stuff. I've
never had a problem. I'll check the version when I get home tonight
    - it's only 2 months old so maybe I managed to get an updated disk
    or something...

818.9do you have the fancy icons?BAGELS::BRANNONDave BrannonFri Oct 16 1987 15:0115
    It worked!

case 1: select trashcan icon that came with my A2000 WB
menu item "empty trash" is ghosted
menu item "discard" is not ghosted
so.... tried discard, that deleted the trashcan and
             it's directory.

case 2: selected the fixed trashcan icon
menu item "empty trash" in not ghosted
             menu item "discard" is ghosted
so.... tried empty trash, that deleted the contents of
the trashcan directory, just like it says in the manual.

The KS/WB disks that came with my 2000 (bought last wed) were
black disks. The WB version is 33.59. I've seen a 500/2000
WB with a version 33.56 that has normal icons, 33.59 has the
fancy icons from the public domain disks (trashcan lid opens,
drawers open, disk icon is black with amiga checkmark). Looks
    really nice.

Hmmm. Will the new Workbench disks (33.59) work on Amiga 1000's?

I've got workbench 33.47. Maybe there have been some improvements...

I think the major difference between the A500/A2000 and the A1000
WB disks is in the startup-sequence. The new versions check for
the presence of the battery clock. If no clock is present, the
    system is loaded normally.

A note went out on Usenet a while back relating to some very minor
changes in the new Workbench files. Most of the printer drivers
    are a few bytes shorter.

I can get a new WB and try it on my A1000. I'm curious too.

The original fancy trashcan and the new improved trashcan both have
problems when you "Initialize" a disk from the Workbench. That
puts a Trashcan icon and directory on the new disk, but the icon
is truncated down to 650 bytes. It only highlights, doesn't open
the lid, when you select it. The workaround is to copy the .info
    to it using the CLI.

Any pointers to info on the format of the .info file? Is there
some known bug that is doing this?

Re: .13

The format of the .info file isn't documented, and shouldn't be. If
you use the routines GetDiskObject and PutDiskObject, you never need
know how icons are stored. To do anything else is very evil. For
information on icons, read the chapter on the Workbench in the Libraries
and Devices volume of the Rom Kernel Manual.

I suspect that the reason that the trashcan written on the new disk
when you format it is ugly is due poor programming in the format program.

The format program tries to duplicate the image of the Trashcan icon from
SYS: if it can find it. If it cannot find it, it creates a default icon
(the old Amiga 1000 1.2 Trashcan).

I suspect that the way the code is written is:

Do a get disk object to read the icon from SYS:.

If you find it, copy the pointer for the unselected image into
the default trashcan icon. Copy some other stuff (but not enough)
from the SYS: icon to the default icon.

Do a put disk object to write out the munged icon.

Looks to be that the broken ugly trashcan icon written by format
is missing some rows of data and that the gadget highlighting method
and alternate image was not copied.

Personally, I blew away the fancy Amiga 2000 icon and use the old
Amiga 1000 icon. It looks better than the result from the formatting
program.
