795.0. "Memory and Drive Test Software Wanted" by NAC::PLOUFF (LANsman Wes) Mon Oct 12 1987 16:03

Some help for the nervous new owner, please. I bought a refurbished
A1000 recently, and it crashes a lot, like maybe once every hour
or two. This seems to happen mostly when running public domain
software such as Gravitywars. The problem is possibly the software
not being well-behaved, the download from my local VAX being flaky,
or the Amiga hardware going bad.

Can anyone help with diagnosing the hardware. Are there memory
and disk drive test programs out there?

What are the worst-behaved PD programs around (no older than this
    year)?

Wes, could you explain the type of crashes you get? Are they hangs,
    software error requesters, Gurus, smoke?

Most errors are software error requesters when attempting disk
operations or loading programs. Usually I have run several things
    since booting up.

Once I crashed when exiting Preferences. I had moved the mouse
before Preferences finished writing to the disk. This, I found
out, is supposed to be a well-known bug in the operating system.

GravWars I believe was written on 1.1. I wasn't too impressed with
    it.

Just goes to show... Gravity Wars is one of the most entertaining
games I've found for the Amiga so far!
