783.0. "Fred Fish Disks Here !" by ELWOOD::PETERS () Wed Oct 07 1987 13:51

Here it is ! The TEST case Fred Fish disk. If this test works
Then I will upload the rest of the FF disks. The Disks can be
	found at

		mvcad3::user0:[Amiga.FFxxx]

Please read help file below before downloading the files.

		Steve Peters

P.S. I am still open for suggestions on a better way to distribute them.

===========================================================================

This file describes how to access and download the Fred-Fish
public domain files contained on MVCAD3.

First, this area contains programs and documentation for software
that is part of the Fred-Fish collection. Each Disk is contained in it's
own sub-directory ( i.e. disk 102 is in [amiga.FF102] ). Each sub-directory
contains a file named contents.xxx, size, and a number of arc files.
The file contents.xxx comes directly from the FF disk. It contains a
short description of each software package. Next, Size contains a "list"
of the ARC files as they were on my AMIGA. This should help you determine
if you downline loaded them correctly. Last, each ARC file contains
all the files for a single software package ( see below ).

	ARC Files - Please read

Each ARC file contains the software plus some special command
files. First is a file called PACK. This is the command file used to
place the files in the ARC. Second, the LIST file contains a list
of all the files contained in the ARC. Next is the BUILD file, this
file is a command file that SHOULD BE USED TO EXTRACT THE FILES. To
save the directory structure and the file names BUILD will extract,
rename and create directories.

To build a package, download the ARC file to your system.
Then use ARC to extract the build file. You need ARC on you system
before you start.

	 	ARC -e Xicon.ARC BUILD

To extract the files, the BUILD file and the ARC MUST be in the same
directory. ( I suggest RAM: ) Then you execute BUILD telling the
system where you want the file to go.

		execute BUILD DF1:

	makes	DF1:Xicon ...

BUILD will extract each file then copy and rename the file to
the destination, last it will delete the temp copy. BUILD will
create directories on the target device. BUILD will also build
the directories under an existing directory.

		execute BUILD DH0:test/

	makes	DH0:test/Xicon ...

Maybe we could use this notes file to describe good programs that
were taken from the FF disks. I am always interested in hearing
about good utilities (such as backup programs) and games or eye
pleasing stuff. If I come across something real usefull, I will
    post something here...

I was hoping to use this note to announce changes to the
down line load system and announce when groups a disks were
    available.

I think the FF disk are ALL full of very useful software.
Because each of us has our own idea about what is "real useful"
software I'm not sure posting it is useful.

Well I for one will be very grateful to have all of these available
online. I don't have very many fish disks at home( 2-3), but I
would be willing to upload them if you provide the process to do
so. Maybe if we pull together on this it wouldn't be so much of
    a workload on Steve Peters.

    regards,

Another one here! I have a few of the early ones and just about
everything from 80 through 101. I'll get a complete list and post.
Let me know which you'd like me to do. (anyone ever do a network
impact study on the load we put on the Easynet? :^)

783.6thanks for offers of help.MPGS::BAEDERWed Oct 07 1987 22:1215
Glad to see ther is a lot of interest in helping on this...Once
we try it out for a while, we can divy-up the work if necessary...
Although a smart command file, and an overnight run can D/L quite
a few bytes at 2400 baud...(What's that you say, you don't have
    a 2400 baud modem! ;-)

By the way, I'm glad to provide this as a testing machine...we here
at SHR may look into other possibilities if it "bogs down", but
I don't see it happening soon....

as for other than the fish items, let me know, and I'll "stash"
    them away there too....

783.8Me too....GHANI::STARKEYThu Oct 08 1987 04:4917
I have ff 38,55 too. You can have mine also..

I would also like to thank everyone that inputs data into notes.
I have only had my machine for awhile and am slowly learning, and
feeling comfortable with it. I would like to thank all the guru's
out there with the free information and the "learning, playing
programs"that people have in their areas.. Ps I am also very new
    to notes..

In response to MacDonalds beef of loading down his machine, I can
understand his concern, but did I read between the lines, that he
is upset for getting into his public area..

Just what is the purpose of Notes, and why do people have the public
areas?? I think that we tend to forget that all of us do not hear
the "same beat of the drum." What is the proper proceedure for
    accessing these areas??

Steve, what about posting you're program / procedure to upload
    Fish disks ?
If it works unattended ( that's what I was trying to do using the
Tracker/Compress approach) I'll be glad to upload FF1->35 at 9600bps
and then copy them into your directory ( don't have disk space here :-(

    Hi there over the ocean
As I get the famous no privileges for attempted operation message
when trying to access to ff101 or ff102 directories,I wonder if
I have to subcribe somewhere to gain acces to these,or if the mistake
is of your side. Please tell me so as FF disks are almost impossible
to be obtainabled here in Europe....
    Thanx	Phil
783.11I'm glad I got a MaxA2000VENERE::ZABOTMarco Zabot-Adv.Tech.mgr-Turin ACTThu Oct 08 1987 09:0927
    I tried to build up FF102 using A500, 512K, 1 floppy.
Sorry, no way ( to do it all).
    I DLL'd all the files on a disk X:
    I prepared an empty FF102:
In RAM: there is not enough space for ARC DBUG.ARC ( with ARC running,
you always get error 103 - Not enough memory).
I did ARC E DBUG BUILD on the X: disk and then moved in ram:
BUILD DBUG.ARC FF102: and tried again. No way ( 103 strikes again!)
    WARNING: Do not use
BUILD xxx.ARC DF0: Amigados may be confused of which DF0:
    you're talking about ( couldn't be the WB ???)
I tried then to do it with SILICON.ARC ( the smaller file ).
It works, but it painfull .... UNLESS you move to ram: the following
    commands:
     execute - arc - echo - copy - delete - if - endif - makedir
Would be nice to use a SHELL ( 207m ?? ) but if you :
      Source build ff102:
but it do not understand .KEY .
With all the commands in RAM: ( they fit ) it works like a charm.
    I don't care to much, I got also a A2000 with .. you name it , I
got it... but I was thinking of others .
The way you did it is the best to DLL a SINGLE piece, but for the
whole disk makes some problem for miniA500. I think I'll go back
    to work on Tracker/Compress.
But , PLEASEEeeee, let's do both way ( if someone can supply disk
    space .. :-)
    marco.

Thanks for all wanting to help. My system to upload the FF disks
needs a little work. I plan to improve the system to night and I
will post the tools and instructions for all who want to help.

For ALL who would like to help.............
PLEASE send mail to MVCAD3::AMIGA and list the disks who have. I
will try and avoid dupicate disks.

Thank you Marco Zabot. This is the kind of feedback I need to
make the system better. I will work on the problems.

783.13FISH #35 - TRACKER + COMPRESSVENERE::ZABOTMarco Zabot-Adv.Tech.mgr-Turin ACTThu Oct 08 1987 14:3121
If someone want to try it, I've Uploaded Fish#35.
    It's located in directory:

       	cesare::$1$dua8:[user0_1.zabot.amiga.fish35]

    You'll find there files F0.Z - F5.Z -..- F75.Z
    Each file represent 5 tracks ( f0.z= 0-4 ; f5.z = 5-9 ...f75.z=75-79).
Once you got them on amiga put a file at a time in RAM: ( or all
toghether on DF1: if you have df1: !) and then:

COMPRESS Fxx.Z ---> will create F0 on you cd

TRACKER WRITE Fxx	---> will write tracks xx-xx+4 onto DF0:

repeat 20 times ( once for each file).
If you need TRACKER it is on fish disk 35 ( egg and chicker story... :-)

No, just joking. Both tracker and COmpress can be found on the same
    directory.

re .10: Fish disks are readily available in Germany at least. Several
'PD software services' offer them, prices range from 5-8 DM each
depending on the agency and quantity (some only sell packages so
you buy e.f. FF1-30 in one package). (The price includes the blank
    floppy of course).

I don't know if they'd deliver to Switzerland but you might want
to as. Pick up a copy of 6800er if you can find one over there.

I am very happy with the way you have organized the FF directory.
I like not having to copy an entire Fish Disk just to get one or
    two programs from it.

Fred Fish disks 94-102 are now on MVCAD3:: . I have been
uploading them from newest to oldest. If anyone has a disk they
are looking for send mail to me at UNLOAD::Peters and I will
    upload it first.
