    I thought I'd post a new note to expand on the various deals available
    to allow A1000 owners to upgrade to an A2000.  Also, this may be
    of interest to anyone looking for a cheap A1000.
    
    This came directly from Moe at the Software Shop in Worcester MA.
    
    1).  Bring in the serial number on the bottom of your A1000 and a
         check for $1295.00 and you walk away with a 1 meg A2000 with
         single floppy.  You also get to keep your A1000!
                                              
         This seems like a fantastic deal, since if you sell your A1000 CPU
         for $500 or so, you got the upgrade $200 cheaper than the original
         A1000 + $1000.00 = A2000 deal.  It also seems like an ideal way 
         to pick up a second machine for work without going bankrupt. 
    
    	 Apparently CBM will pay the dealer $500 just for his calling
         in the serial number for a corresponding A2000 sale.
                                              
    
    2)   I may have misled some people with an earlier comment about
         cheap A1000s.  There are two ways to get a non-new A1000; the
         first is to buy an 'official' refurbished machine from a dealer.
    	 Most of these refurbs are in fact brand-new machines that were
    	 DOA for some reason or other, and CBM has repaired the defect.
    	 These units carry the full 90-day warranty, and are equivalent
         to a new A1000.  I have seen the insides of several refurbs,
         and believe me, these things were never even turned on (no
         dust inside from the fan, not even a chocolate smudge on the
    	 keyboard).
    
    	 The second way is to walk in and pick up a used machine from
         a dealer who has taken it in on an A2000 trade-up.  These machines
    	 are to be sold as-is.  You power it up, and if it works, you
         take it home.                                       
    
    	 In general, the used machines won't be bundled with a monitor,
         since the trader-upper will probably keep it for his A2000.
    
    I don't know about other dealers' prices, but the Software Shop
    has established the following deals:
    
    Official refurb w/512K, Amiga monitor, and 90-day warranty.... $925.00
    (Remember, this is  the equivelant of a brand-new system)
    NOTE:  Moe WILL NOT unbundle the monitor from the refurb package!
                              
    Used A1000 w/512K, sold as is ................................ $450.00
    
    I personally think the used deal is a better buy, since one could
    buy a Sony CPD-1290 monitor for $500 and have a MUCH BETTER display
    than the Amiga monitor could ever provide.
    
    (I wish there were some way to make the Amiga 1080 monitor go away;
    can't we sell them to the Soviets or something?)
    
    The above information is correct to the best of my knowledge; I
    have absolutely no financial, legal, or emotional affiliation with
    the Software Shop.  Moe may change these prices at his whim,
    since its his store.

    One more plug for the A2000 upgrade...
    
    The Software Shop will sell a 20 meg MiniScribe internal HD with
    CBM's DMA controller for $699.  This is the same drive used in the
    Supra HD, but is much faster.  With 1.3 due in December, it should
    be a real screamer (.4 MBytes/sec?)
    
    Also, on the off chance that any ST owners might want to pick up one of
    the used A1000s as a new toy, (Please don't hurt me; this idea has been
    tossed around by a few people) the Atari color monitor works just fine
    on any of the Amiga models.  The early Hitachi models work especially
    well.  A cable can be bought for $20 or so, or can be hacked out in an

    Sounds like a raw deal to me. Why go for a $450 used machine when
    Abel sells new A-500's with 512K and upgradable to 1M AND having
    the same slot (albeit on the other side) for $515. Why not pay the
    extra $65?

    You may be right.  I didn't know that the A500 price was so low
    thru Abel...  assuming one can get through to them.
    
    On the other hand, I still like a detachable keyboard, although
    it is a minor convenience.  Maybe the only real plus is the ready
    availability of 2+ megs and lots of hard drives for the A1000. 
    I dunno, are any HDs shipping for the 500 yet?
    
    One stong plus for the A500 is the prospect of a 1 meg Fat Agnes
    chip upgrade in the near futu.
    

Had to get my two cents in here.  I did manage to get ahold of Abel one
lucky day in June and ordered an Amiga 500 at their great price.
Two weeks ago (maybe it was three) I finally got ahold of them again
and they promised me "We're definitely getting them in next week!"
I chose to cancel the order and just get one from the Software Shop,
but I did buy the 512K add-on board and it's sitting on my desk at home
unopened.  It's not the Amiga one, it's the other company's (can't recall
the name, is it MicroBotics?).  Right now, I'd eat the shipping cost if
someone would like to buy it off me for what I paid (I think it was $119)
and pick it up (I live in Boylston, work in Marlboro).  That A2000 offer
sounds real appealing, so I'm leaning away from the A500 as a second
machine.  Send mail to LEDS::HAGER if you're interested in the board.
