649.0. "Amiga Video Fun Facts" by DICKNS::MACDONALD (WA1OMM Listening 224.28) Mon Aug 17 1987 12:43

    Fun Facts for Amiga Video Buffs

    DigiView V2 and a color home video camera produce very nice hi-res
    B&W screens (640x400).

    A hi-res B&W IFF file is approximately 128K in length, but ARC will
    compress it to about 58K.

    There are a couple PD utilities that allow animating DigiView files
    by loading up to 32 frames into memory and then displaying them
    so quickly one after another that the result looks like a film-clip.

    DigiView V2 can generate an IFF image from a VCR. All you need is
    a 4-head VCR that produces a jitter-free still frame. In other words
    you don't necessarily need a camera to generate IFF files.

649.1new ANIM IFF formatLEDS::ACCIARDIMon Aug 17 1987 17:249
    Another interesting development...

    Aegis has registered a new IFF format called ANIM that has the
    interesting property of only storing parts of a frame that differ
    from the preceding frame. Not owning VScape-3D, I don't know if
    it uses this new storage method.

    Sounds like a slick way to store a ton of frames in RAM for animation.

    How does Digiview v2 do with color images from a home video camera?

    re:.1

    I have Videoscape 3d. Since you can load iff format files as a
    background image in a videoscape scene, I don't see why you couldn't
    load a bunch of successive Digiview images and record them into
    an ANIM file.

    I may try this as I have ordered Digiview v2 and it should be in
    today. When I do, I'll let you know how it turns out.

    Re .1:

    A format which stores the frame differences only might also reduce the
    size of the disk file. :^)

    re: .2

    It does color frames with a color home video camera the same way
    as it does with a B&W, 'cept it takes a few seconds longer. They actually
    scan each pixel 4 times (I believe). You use the same color wheel.
    The pictures are not nearly as sharp as those received with the
    B&W camera.

    The V2 software actually allows you to take 5 sec frames with a
    B&W camera for a totla of 15 sec per color picture (pretty fast).

649.5Do you NEED a camera or only a VCR?NOVA::RAVANMon Aug 24 1987 17:514
    I'm confused. Can you take a picture directly from a VCR or
    do you need a video camera?

    You can take a picture from a VCR providing you have a jitter free
    still frame on your VCR. However, this method doesn't produce optimum
    results.

    And its only in B&W. Digi-Tek does have some new software coming
    out that will allow capture of a high quality VCR image in color.

    Can I take a picture from a vcr tape and turn it into a Amiga
    screen?

    Yep .. using Perfect Vision with the Color Splitter, or DigiView
    with the Color Splitter. There are also some other more expensive
    ways using Framegrabbers.

    See note 2036. I had uploaded a FrameGrabbed picture of a CNN news
    anchor to NORSE""::AMIGA:[GRAPHICS] called FGPIC.arc, but I can't
    seem to find it there. Anyone have it lying around?

    Also see MTWAIN::USER:[MCDONALD.IFF] for a picture of Deanna Trio
    from Star Trek NG.
