619.0. "SHAR, Anyone?" by WALLAC::MACKELPRANG (Who R U) Tue Jul 28 1987 19:57

    Can anyone point me in the right direction to get a VMS - executable
    copy of SHAR so that I can use all the fun looking goodies from
    USENET? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    You can copy shar.c and shar.exe from

      ant::bipolar:[smcafee.public]

    Some of the usenet shar files have multiple periods in the file
    names they contain. Obviously this runs into problems for VMS.
    I modified this version to change the second and subsequent periods
    to an 'x' so beware.

    	Since people here seem to be familiar with usenet, could somebody
    tell me how to access conferences on that system?

    				Thanks

    See note 22 and its replies. The supposedly active conferences
    are:    comp.sys.amiga
            comp.sources.amiga
            comp.binaries.amiga

    For the past few weeks I haven't been getting much from any of
    these. They seem to have been reactivated in the past few days
    however as I've started to get mail again. A warning though, if
    you subscribe to all three, be prepared to go through (or at least
    delete) a number of large mail messages each day.

    regards,

    Re. .1

    Thanks a lot. I've used it to unpack many files already.

    Re. .2

    USENET is a network that consists of conferences of people all around the
    world. Amiga info, source files, and binary files are just three of the
    MANY available.

    For more info, read notes 22, 181, 204, and 537 in this conference. Also,
    do an ADD ENTRY ROLL::USENET to your notesfile. Then you can get more
    info from that notesfile.

    USENET has been down for a while, but I believe everything will
    be back to normal by next monday (Aug. 3).

    Hope this helps.

    Mark.
