602.0. "Blown serial port " by MTBLUE::PFISTER_ROB () Mon Jul 20 1987 11:47

    My Avatex 1200 modem died a painfull death last week, and it appears
    to have taken part of my serial port with it. I got out my old acoustic
    coupler, and my Amiga put out a carrier, but didn't receive anything,
    not even garbage. When I got out my debugging terminal, I found
    that I could send characters to it, without errors, but again, couldn't
    receive anything.

    My guess is that I blew a UART, but I haven't ever peeked inside
    my Amiga, much less replaced any parts. How big of a deal would
    it be to find the UART, and replace it? And would I have to replace
    any other chips while I was going?

    Thanks,
    Robb

    You would most likely have to replace one of the 8520s. I don't
    know where you can get one of these guys except at an authorized
    dealer. It should cost about 45.00 with labor. If you want to
    know which one of the two 8520's it is, I can look at my schematics
    but they aren't readily available. THey are underneath 5 weaks
    collecting garbage in my room.
602.2found one, (I think)MTBLUE::PFISTER_ROBThu Jul 30 1987 11:317
    I saw an ad in computer shopper from BG micro, or J&S, or someplace
    like that for an 8520b for $5.95, is this the same creature? or
    is this a speciality chip?

    thanks

602.3Any supplier of parts out there??MTBLUE::PFISTER_ROBNo Pain, No PainMon Jan 18 1988 11:089
Looks like I need a new Paula, having finally got my A1000 schematics,
and my dinasour oscilloscope going. Any idea's where I could buy one?

(Not too many authorized Amiga dealers up here, and an even smaller
number of helpfull ones)

Thanks.

I'm also considering buying a used/bare-bones[no monitor] A1000, with working
serial port. Any good deals on them?

Thanks

602.5How did the avatex 1200 die?JANIS::DONAHUEMon Jan 18 1988 15:456
re: .0
	How did your avatex 1200 die? What were you doing or not doing?
	I just bought one and it works fine but I would like to avoid
	a problem if I can. Thanks in advance.

602.6not really sure..MTBLUE::PFISTER_ROBNo Pain, No PainMon Jan 18 1988 15:5610
re: -.1

I'm not really sure why it did that. It was on for about 8 months straight,
and about all I can figure was the heat/humidity got to it. (It was a rather
hot week when it died)

Avatex did send me a new modem (next model up actually) no problem, but getting
the port to work is getting to be a hassle...

602.7Parts 'R' UsWINNER::JBERNARDJohn Bernard YWO/292-2591Mon Jan 18 1988 17:5711
    For replacement parts, I have used D-FIVE Associates in Bedford,
    Mass. They will send you the part along with an invoice. It usually
    takes 10 days to get the part, since I imagine they get it from
    CBM. I just got a replacement FAT AGNUS chip from them. Just give
    them a call and tell them what you want.

Thanks, they do in fact have Paula's, unfortunately they are a bit harsh at $64

( %20 of the going rate for a used A1000)

I know someone here did this for an IBM AT one time. It was
an 8741 (or one of those CPU,RAM, ROM, UART chips) with a couple
connectors. It handled ^S, ^Q (XOFF, XON) flow control.
It required external power.

I can probably get the scematic and source for the program. But it seems
there must be a better way...
