556.0. "Dead Amiga" by HYSTER::DEARBORN (Trouvez Mieux) Fri Jun 19 1987 13:37

    Yesterday, both my internal and external drives started giving off
    read/write errors. One of the strangest symptoms is that they
    both refuse to delete files or rename files. Rename a file, eject
    the disk, put it back in and like magic...the old file is still
    there.

    Any ideas? Sounds like it might be the chip that controls the drives,
    not the drives themselves.

    Help...

556.1...LEDS::ACCIARDIFri Jun 19 1987 14:255
    Just a crazy idea, but my friend had a problem where none of his
    system disks would validate. Not a single one. So he tried
    Kickstarting with a fresh backup copy of KS 1.2. No more problems.
    I've heard of this happening a few times, where Kickstart just wears
    out or something.
556.2similar observationMTBLUE::PFISTER_ROBFri Jun 19 1987 16:196
    I had a similar observation once where an application would only
    work after I had powered down, kickstarted, workbench, and then that
    program. It turned out that some calls were getting short integers
    instead of the long ones it expected, and the power down zero'd
    everything in the top 1/2 of the long integer, so it worked right
    once. Perhaps KickStart has a similar flaw somewhere?
556.3I'll give it a tryHYSTER::DEARBORNTrouvez MieuxFri Jun 19 1987 17:289
    Powering down has had no difference. I'll try the new Kickstart
    tonight...although I'm a little worried about putting my only/original
    Kickstart disk in. I've been working off my one backup copy (like
    a good boy).

    I hope this takes care of it.

556.4UpdateHYSTER::DEARBORNTrouvez MieuxMon Jun 22 1987 13:408
    I tried a new copy of Kickstart. No difference. I called the Memory
    Location and they said it was probably the chip that controls the
    drives...

    Taking it in today.

556.5Thanks for your prayers.HYSTER::DEARBORNTrouvez MieuxTue Jun 23 1987 17:229
    Well, here's the end of the story. The internal drive can write
    but can't read. For some reason, the circuits are shot...so that
    means replacement time.

    Oh well, at least I will get one of those newer quieter drives.
    (My Amiga is rather old.)

556.6Ya Hoo!HYSTER::DEARBORNTrouvez MieuxTue Jun 30 1987 15:0918
    The Memory Location comes thru! They replaced the internal drive.
     Replacement cost, $145. I returned home to find that the external
    drive still did not work properly. I took everything back. Sure
    enough, the external drive is shot and had to be replaced too.

    They gave me a new external drive for FREE! They couldn't understand
    how both could go bad at once so they decided I needed a break.
     So in the end, I wound up with two new Panasonic drives for the
    replacement price of one.

    Nice people. Maybe I should buy a Supra drive from them.

    By the way, all service was performed overnight.

    Everything is back on track now...
