551.0. "Hack (the game)" by ANGORA::SMCAFEE (Steve McAfee) Mon Jun 15 1987 01:34

Can someone tell me how to restart a saved Hack character from the
    CLI?

This is the first time I've played this game for more than a few
minutes and I'm running into a problem. I keep getting the Guru
sometime around level 25-28. I tried setting the stack to 20000 in the
startup-sequence, but it still happened. I thought if I could avoid
loading the workbench that memory might make the difference, but I
can't find any info on how to restart a saved char from the CLI.
"hack ?" doesn't give a list of the command line parameters as
    it should.

BTW I'm using 1.0.1E. Haven't got 1.0.3 yet. Any difference?

    regards,

I don't know about running HACK from the CLI,
but you can increase the amount of stack supplied
by using the INFO (?) workbench menu function
and editing the appropriate field in the ICON.

One of my friends who is a Hack fanatic says that there is a bug
in the program that causes the guru around that level. He hasn't
found any way around the problem either...

I finally got around the problem last night.

      1. Copy workbench. Delete the tons of stuff you don't need.
Keep libs:, l:, devs:, s:, and a few of the commands in c:.

      2. In s/startup-sequence put only one command "stack 20000" (keep
          the stack command in c:)

      3. Label the disk Hack_Game and put Hack in the upper level directory.
Create/copy a directory called "Saved Games" (no quotes).

When you boot this disk you can start hack from the CLI. When
Hack prompts "Who are you? " respond with your saved character's
name (if you have one), it will load your saved game. This is
so obvious I could have kicked myself for not trying it before.

So far I haven't had any problems with this scenerio and I'm down
      to level 28 or 29.

      regards,

You can also do "run Hack -uNNNN-C" where NNNN is name, C is class.

    re .3

I mistakenly said I was down to level 28 or 29. I actually made
it to 26 and this seems to be the bottom on this version of hack.
(i.e. No hell levels.) At least I found the Amulet on level 26
(the real one not a fake). Also the potion of confusion/teleport
scroll combo did not successfully get me to the hell levels.

Oh well, it was well worth the price :-)
