I *think* MANX's marketing policy changed at some point regarding
tools which were distributed with the developer version.
When I bought my Developer's kit, I didn't receive ORD, VI, DIFF(?)
and other things in the full commercial kit. I think that now they
market more with the developer package. Can anyone verify this?
Anyway, clearly, if this is true, you and I got the short end of the
deal. But leave it to Manx to try to get you to pay more money
for what other people get for free now. I wouldn't put it past them.
I bought their compiler because at the time it was the superior
C compiler. That distinction is fading, although the environment
they provide is still nicer than lattice. But in my dealings with them
I have formed a somewhat bad opinion of them. For instance,
to use LB in any useful way, you really need ORD. Particularly on
a 512k system where you may not have the ram for libraries and disk access
is so slow. Oh well, enough. On to the questions:
> 1) are the extra utilities worth the extra $50?
If you have been making do without them, why bother paying more.
If something like ORD or MAKE would make you life easier, then
it's always worth a little more money.
> 2) is Z a good editor?
Nothing spectacular. Useful, especially if CTAGS is implemented.
But I prefer EMACS. Which is also found on more machines and costs nothing.

See above ramblings. Anyone out there KNOW this stuff?

Ditto.
