304.0. "Help with EDITORS !" by CESARE::ZABOT (Marco Zabot-Adv.Tech.mgr-Turin ACT) Thu Feb 05 1987 16:24

Since a while I've been storing on the VAX most of the sources
coming from USENET. Finally a week ago I brought my Amiga into
the office and uploaded [ :-) ] the file to my Amiga using VT100
emulator ( Thanks Dave!). No problem. Size = 700000 crts.
Then I tried to split this big file into components.
All the editor I tried wanted to have the whole file in memory. I
got only 512 k.... I used: EMAS, UEDIT, Microforge, ED, LSE etc..
There is no single SCREEN editor that accept it! The only way I
worked out has been thru the line editor:

	EDIT BIGFILE
	: to /dfn:little1/
	: 3500n
: f/From:/ <-- this means a new messagge from usenet
	: cf /dfn:little1/
	: to /dfn:little2/
	....
	: cf /dfn:littlelast/
	: stop

Then I started using EMACS on little files ( limit around 150000K).
	Any better suggestion ?
	marco.

BTW, my EMACS works only with 1.1. Someone got a version running under 1.2 ?

My 1.2 enhancer package came with MicroEmacs on the extras disk.
And your right that Micro Emacs requires the file to fit in memory,
lucky for me EMACS on the VAX will edit anything.

    What's the 1.2 enhancer package?

That is the name of the upgrade for version 1.2 of Kickstart and Workbench.
It includes three disks and a 77 page manual. On the third disk is a new
version of Basic plus many utilities (Emacs, Font Editor, etc.)

In the US it costs $15. It is still a little hard to get copies, though.
Stores sell out of their shipments fairly quickly.

Hmmm.. a bit different than here. Mine came with 1.2 (and 1.1) and
a few others disks - like a Music demo but no Emacs...

I have heard several times that there is a font editor on the 1.2
extras disk - mine doesn't seem to have one. What gives?

I was thinking that it might be better to shar your files on the
vax and unshar them on the Amiga .It would be faster to break them
out at the Vax shar them and then simply unshar them after downloading.
I just came across a version of uue,uud for the Amiga so you could
decode the executables at the Amiga . I have a version of Shar that
I found on a disk with some other material from DBW but haven't
had time to try it out yet .

    re: 304.5
I believe mine has it,I also believe it was a freebe that was
extended to the early versions of 1.2 .I seem to recall something
about the font editor being released to developers only and that
it was not to be included in the standard 1.2 upgrade .It could
be that CBM has indeed stopped shipping the font editor with 1.2

My "enhancer" package came with the Font Editor, Emacs, a memory
monitor and a couple of other public domain things.
