192.0. "Defender of the Crown" by NINJA::HEFFEL (Bored on Board) Wed Nov 26 1986 00:37

I don't recall seeing this anywhere in this conference, so I'll
put it here. We bought a copy of Mindscape's "Defender of the Crown"
the other day and were completely dazzled by it. The attention
to detail is striking. The images are precise and beautiful. The
transition between screens is mostly smooth. Pauses are largely
due to the speed of the disk drives. And in this game you get a
good example of how well the Amiga can play music, animate, and
read the disk at the same time. The game itself is roughly speaking,
"Risk" dressed up for Sunday prayer meeting. The idea is that you
are out to conquer your neighbors, but the means in which you do
this are beautiful to behold. You can win land by jousting or
conquering. You can earn money by choosing the correct lands to
conquer. You can steal money by raiding your enemies' castles.
You can win love by rescuing a fair damsel. In all of these sequences
you are treated to special effects that would make Spielberg jealous.
(Okay, so I exaggerate, sue me.) All told, a very tight piece of
programming and a quite playable game. Some of the sequences are
frustrating and others get a little old after a few hours of play,
but the game itself is nice each time you sit down to play it.

192.1More good stuff coming...JOKE::ACCIARDIWed Nov 26 1986 09:2211
Gary, see note 163 for more on DOC. (Or skip it, since you have
    the program)

By the way, my reliable sources tell me that -=RJ Mical=- (author
of Intuition, for the neophytes among us) is working on a game for
Electronic Arts that is a pinball simulation from the viewpoint
    of the pinball!

Personally, I can't wait for the rest of the Cinemaware series to
    come out.

Re .1:

At the Commodore Fair a couple of weeks back, someone asked the Electronic
Arts representative about the Mical project. The EA Guy said, "Well, I
can tell you is you will be doing some flying in the game..."

That description is vague enough that it could refer to a pinball whizzing
through its life. Although, a lot of people interpreted it as being that
RJ is working on a flight simulator. If so, I would expect dynamite
graphics for the scenery, not the rather disappointing graphics of
Flight Simulator II.

Whatever RJ's program is, you can bet it will really use all the features
of the Amiga.
