165.0. "Computer Town: Ecch!" by HYSTER::DEARBORN (Trouvez Mieux) Mon Nov 10 1986 12:27

    Watch out for these guys!

    FLAME ON

Computer Town has given me headaches ever since the first time I
went in there. Friday was my last time.

Several months ago, one of their 'computer expert' salespersons
talked me into buying a printer. After weeks of trouble, I was
finally able to get it to work with the Amiga. The printer never
performed very well. I wound up selling it to my neighbor.

I ordered a new interface for it through Computer Town two weeks
ago, so that my neighbor could use it with his computer. Friday
the interface came in. It was the wrong one. They gave me a real
big hassle about getting MY money back. After all of this, the
salesman had the nerve to tell me that one day I would be back,
TO BUY A REAL COMPUTER from them!!!!

After all the sh*t they put me through.....I really felt like decking
the guy. I could of snapped back at him to have him explain why
the Amiga is any less of a computer than the IBM PC's or Mac's that
    they sell. Why bother?

Instead, I would rather get them here. Avoid these Bozos. I wouldn't
even buy a replacement ribbon from them. They seem to be loosing
money. Their showroom is now half the size it was 6 months ago.
The staff is getting smaller each day. Gee, that's TOO BAD!

165.1Thanks for the WarningTLE::RMEYERSRandy MeyersMon Nov 10 1986 18:507
Time wounds all heels.

Your blood pressure will get better if you just repeat that to
yourself.

Thanks for the review, though. It's good to know who the jerks
are.
165.2I Hate Dealers!!JAKE::ACCIARDIMon Nov 10 1986 19:1427
Actually, these types of stories make me laugh. Not at your misery,
Randy, but at the typical shit-fer-brains salespeople at the
    dealerships.

I went into ComputerFactory in Framingham one day with a friend,
to toy with an Apple ][GS, and this sales guy came over and started
with his pitch. We played dumb, and told him I had put some money
down on an Amiga, and he had about 5 minutes to convince me that
the ][GS was a wiser buy. He asked me what I wanted a 'puter for,
and I told him I needed hi-res color graphics for CAD work, and
I told him I needed multi-tasking. He proceeded to dump all over
the Amiga, saying CBM was on their last legs, the Amiga was a pile
of junk, etc... Did the ][GS multitask I asked? Sorta, he replied.
How? "It is so fast, you're always finished", he said.

What about graphics? I asked, and he said with a straight face that
the ][GS blew the Amiga out of the water in the graphics department,
    and was much faster, too.

Honestly, with the level of support and intelligence I've seen at
dealers, I really believe that CBM should mass market, drop the
price, and sell a zillion of 'em.

Actually, dealers just hate CBM because Apple and IBM give them
    much higher profit margins.

Boy, did that give me a good laugh! Very funny. Does the joker
    know any other good ones?

165.4Atari has snobbish dealers also.NEXUS::MORGANgoing where no Pagan has gone beforeTue Nov 11 1986 03:304
Don't feel like the Lone Rangers, the Atari dealer in town here
is a SNOB because he is the only one here. Too bad.

      Mikie?
165.5....JAKE::ACCIARDITue Nov 11 1986 10:5817
Actually, there are some terrific Amiga places, especially the Memory
Location in Wellesly, MA. This place is an Amiga candy store.
I have really only had problems in the 'Respectable' dealers, i.e,
Apple & IBM stores. I really think Jack Tramiel was right in bypassing
that whole chain. He knows that you can't sell a volume product
at a good price through a high-markup dealership. Imagine what
Apple would charge for a 1040 ST? At least $2000.00 and up!

CBM's decision to use the big dealers was a mistake, as far as I
am concerned. Big dealers are not into product loyalty, or advanced
technology. They understand only one thing...high markups. That
is their perogative, but I would have no objections to buying Amigas
at Toys-r-Us, or anyplace else that will give me a good price.
If it breaks, so what? Mail it back and get it fixed. It took
my friend 6 weeks to get his drive aligned thru a Computerland dealer,
and he could have mailed it to a CBM repair facility himself in
    less time.
