110.0. "Versions and Docs" by 25813::MACDONALD (CUP/ML) Thu Sep 18 1986 13:25

    My Amiga came with V1.1 Kickstart and V1.1 Workbench. Are these
    the current versions? I thought I read something about a V1.2.

    Also, there wasn't a whole lot of documentation. Is there any
    additional documentation available beyond the Intro and Basic books
    supplied with the computer?

    Thanks.

    I know several people who are using "Beta" versions of WB 1.2. They
    rave about the new features....such as..

    * Selectable screen resolution from preferences
    * Faster disk access on read & write
    * Dynamic buffering of directories (You open a window and Ka-Pow--all
      the Icons are there instantly)
    * Support for reading files from virtually every 5 1/4" disk format
    * Fixes on (hopefully) all remaining "Guru" bugs.
    * Auto-configuration of all external devices attached to the main
      buss, i.e. memory expanders, DMA devices, etc. You hook it up,
      and Amigados figures out what it is.

    The best estimate of release date is mid-late October. C-A is still
    tryng to remove some bugs that won't let some programs run under
    1.2. I am trying to get a beta copy, and I'll post my impressions.

110.2...November?DSSDEV::SAUTERJohn SauterThu Sep 18 1986 16:237
    Computer Mart in Nashua, NH is saying November for 1.2.
    Another nice feature of 1.2 will be more flexibility in the
    printer driver customization, so you can use the standard
    software with a wider variety of printers.

    They probably ought to call it 2.0.

Re: DOCs

I too was amazed at how little documentation came with the system. However,
if you visit your favorite computer store or bookstore you will find more
manuals than you have time to read. So far the Addison Wesley books all seem
to be of fine quality. I also bought one from another publisher (Bantam?) on
Amiga DOS (I forget the name, but it is a user's guide). It seems to have the
necessary info, but is filled with typos. It was apparently edited into the
published format by someone that didn't understand anything about computers,
and then issued without proofing. However it is still possible to figure out
what was meant. Plan to spend ~$150 for enough manuals to understand the
system and how to use it.

    Re: v1.2

    I had a beta test copy in my sweaty palms for a little while. I
    eventually scratched it `cause I'd run out of disks and had to
    sacrifice something. Anyway, it looks like a dream. Things are
    indeed faster. There is now a disk icon for RAM:. Aesthetically
    WB is much more pleasing to the eye. (The trash can really looks
    like one.) Note pad has a few more features. Etcetera etcetera
    etcetera. I didn't use it more than just to play a little, but
    I can hardly wait for the real thing. It looks like they may be
    giving us what they should have in the first place: an OS to match
    the hardware.

    Mr Postman look and seeeee, if there's a diskette in your bag for
    meeee....

110.5Upgrade Policy25813::MACDONALDCUP/MLFri Sep 19 1986 12:526
    Will CBM be shipping these automatically to registered owners?
    Or, will it be a matter of finding a dealer willing to part with
    a copy? I am not sure what CBM's upgrade policy is, or how reliable
    they are.

    I bought my Amiga in Oct. '85, and received WB 1.0. About three
    months later, WB1.1 and Amigabasic appeared at my house. Given
    the staff cutbacks at C-A, I wouldnt count on getting home delivery.
