96.0. "Some DFO3 help, please." by SHOGUN::HEFFEL (Owned by a cat) Tue Sep 09 1986 03:09

I freely admit to being a telecommunications novice and because
of this I'm going bananas. I've been trying to make my Amiga talk
through a DFO3 to a VAX. I've obtained what I believe to be a suitable
modem cable and hooked it up to both devices. I have booted up
Starterm (a PD comm program which looks useful). I have noted that
the DTR light on the front of the modem is lit. The ANL, ST, RDL,
DTL, and DATA TALK buttons are out and the HS button is in. (This
is the configuration that we use when the modem is hooked to the
VT100.) When Starterm is up, I strike CTRL-b and get the now familiar
CLACK. So far so good. The problem is that it refuses to listen
to any further keystrokes. (The phone #, that is.) It times out
in a second or two. What the f*ck am I doing wrong!? The Setup
    config is as follows:
    1200 Baud
    8 bits - No parity.

This is essentially the same setup we use on the VT100. The only
thing that is missing because the my terminal programs refuse to
allow me to set it, is the Xon/Xoff parm. I know diddly about
Xon/Xoff. I don't even know enough about it to know if it's a
    potential problem. SIGH!

Could anyone help save this boy from insanity? Any leads, shared
experiences, condolences etc would be welcome.

    Thanks,
    Gary

96.1Not all DF03's are created equally.KIRK::LONGWed Sep 10 1986 12:143
I bought an Amiga to Hayes cable and Online. Did everything you
did (except set Online to VT100 mode) and then called a dial in
number with my phone because my DF03 doesn't support auto-dial.

The DF03 will dial just fine when it's connected to the VT100 but
something about the Amiga cable is giving it fits and me headaches.
I'll try hand dialing, but I really don't want to deal with that
every time I want to connect. Sigh.

Are you sure it's the cable and not the software? I have a DF03
that I use with Dave Wecker's VT100 terminal emulator and it autodials
just fine. I remember having trouble with the ONLINE! software
when I used it and the problem was the way I had set things up.
The modem was working great; I had just not been explicit enough
when I told ONLINE! how to autodial.

I wish I knew. The only emulators I have are some of the earlier
ones from the PD. I've been meaning to get my paws on Dave's program
but have been unable to first get my paws on a Kermit with which
to do the downloading. Frustration abounds.

    Thanks for the suggestions,
    Gary
