58.0. "Advice on a Configuration" by EVE::P_WINSTON () Tue Jul 01 1986 18:11

    I'm about to buy an AMIGA and I'm looking for advice on the
    configuration.

    In particular, I'd like comments on
                "C" compilers,
                 hard disks (or do you down load software)
                 3rd party memory and expansion boxs

     or anything else that you think someone about to buy should know.

    thanks

58.1Distilled WisdomNUHAVN::SORKINAl Sorkin 289-1280Wed Jul 02 1986 20:2210
      The distilled wisdom at this time is :

                * Manx "c"

                * Wait on the hard disk since rapidly decreasing $$
                  are forcast within 6 months

                * Wait about 2 months on expansion boxes and cards
                   lots coming out , need to sort out performance

    Knowing as little as I do about the Amiga, but having much contact with
    Amiga users, I would have to agree with Al.

58.3what about memory & 2nd floppy?KIRK::KYZIVATPaul KyzivatThu Aug 07 1986 19:147
what about memory and 2nd floppy drive? I gather 512k is necessary for much
software.

As someone just starting to look, I am also interested in understanding what
the "standard" configuration includes and how useful it is.

58.4Can't live without them...HYSTER::DEARBORNThe One to Watch <>Fri Aug 08 1986 14:547
    Many software packages require at least 512K. I can't imagine trying
    to use the Amiga with only one drive. Just like the Mac, disk swapping
    would quickly send you screaming out the door to buy a second drive,
    at any price!

58.5Agreed: need disks and memory.GWEN::LANDAUWed Sep 03 1986 19:338
Second that motion: I doubt that an Amiga would be "useful"
without two floppy drives and 512K. Depends on one's
frustration levels, in the case of the disk, but much software
just won't run without the extra memory, e.g., compilers and
linkers. Go into a store and look at the labels on software:
almost all packages say "Requires 512K."

    Yessssss. The second drive is necessary. I didn't get one. I'm
    going wacko. Fortunately I got the extra memory. Maybe I can hold
    off the madness for another month or so. Ayeeeeeeeeee! :^)

    Spend the extra $$'s for the drive and memory. The brain cells
    you save may be your own.

    Waiting on the cash for DF1:,

    BTW, having the extra drive might also help you keep your data intact.
    I've trashed the data on several disks because I've pulled them
    out of the drive before the light went out. Damn requestors come
    up before the drive stops. Shouldn't happen if there's no need
    to swap. Or if you watch the stupid light. |-(
58.7Me too.CYBORG::LAMBERTMax Headroom....Catch the wave...Fri Sep 05 1986 14:005
    Gary, before I had a second drive I trashed almost every disk I
    own because of that GD requestor which asks for another disk before
    the heads are back in their cave... Major Frustration...
