Para. 5, sentence 3 to end para.

"The sidecar is actually the most interesting product I have heard
about - it provides me with IBM compatible slots so I can buy cheapo
IBM peripherals anywhere for my amiga. Hard cards (30MB og hard
disk on an IBM card) and RAM will be most useful. Oh yeah, as a
side benefit you can run IBM PC software (etc.)"

Note 37.0 author: Has anyone priced alternative configurations with
the sidecar as a pack-mule for the Amiga?
37.2CHEAP HARD DISK CARD FOR SIDECAR?ERIE::SORKINFri May 30 1986 21:003
THE HARD CARD I RECENTLY SAW ADVERTISED BY MAIL ORDER WAS AROUND
$590 FOR A 20MEG HARD DISK CARD (IBM CARD TYPE). SOUNDS AS THOUGH
THIS SHOULD WORK IN THE SIDE CAR.

One note about the sidecar:

We went to the Amiga thing at the Computer mart last weekend, and questioned
someone there who's job seemed to be to tell people about the sidecar. Asked
him if it would take industry compatible hard disks, and he said yes. Asked
him if said hard disk would be accessible from AmigaDOS, and he said no, just
from the PC emulator in the first versions. Asked him why Amiga was trying to
sell PCs instead of the Amiga, and got no answer.

did he say WHEN sidecar would be available??? or the PC emulator?

    did someone demo either one?

Does anyone know yet what size boards and what type of pinout the
sidecar is going to expect? Also will it have its own power supply?
Who is going to make it? Any idea what it will cost? Thanks.

37.7 More details from CBM rep.PENNSY::SORKINFri Jun 06 1986 13:525
The Sidecar originates from CBM-Europe and is made by them based
upon the clones they now sell there. It is supposed to have it's
own power supply and take std. IBM size cards. Cost is supposed
to be $600-700. No Pinout info.

From the information that's been passed to me through Amazing Computing
and from the place that I work here's the scoop on the Sidecar

The demo units that were shown at COMDEX boasted 3 expansion slots for
anything (Hard Drives, etc.) except for a graphics card (which would be
useless anyhow since the Sidecar uses the Amiga for video out.)
Supposedly this means that you can hook up a hard drive to the Sidecar
partition it for use with both the Amiga and Sidecar and run from there.
I know this can be done if you replace the 5 1/4 drive with a hard drive..
I don't know if this is possible from the expansion slots.

The Sidecar runs in Monochrome in a standard amiga window on your workbench..
in color the sidecar runs in a window on a seperate screen. If you click on
the inside of the window the borders dissappear to give you a full 80 by 24
line screen.

RJ Michael did the software that links the SideCar to the Amiga and from
what I hear it sets up a means of communication between the two processors
so that the Amiga can access things like co-processors from the sidecar
and vice-versa. Overall the link between the two "heads" of the system
has been well thought out.

..... And yes, the Sidecar even runs Flight Simulator!!!!

Now, my question, Commodore are you listening? When are we going to see
the product released?

[---Yow! I'm Hungry ... Is there anything good to eat here?---]

I have a few questions about the sidecar that is soon (so they say)
to be released. First of all, Does the sidecar have to be directly on
the Amiga's expansion bus, or can you have it running off an expansion board
like a memory board? Does the sidecar have a 86 pin bus comming out of it?
If it does, does it pass the Amiga's full 1amp or does it use part of it?
Second of all, I have head about using an IBM hard drive and partitioning
part of it as an amiga hard drive. Does this hard drive use DMA or is
it bound by normal I/O speeds?
Thanks in advance for asking all these questions, I am considering buying
a 1meg. board and do *not* want to buy it if it would be incompatable with the
sidecar.

I suspect if you call Commodore West Chester repeatedly about how great
it would be to have one of these, and how you would love to buy one they
would make sure it got expedited.

Yes, the sidecar plugs into the 86 pin expansion bus and also "passes thru"
the Joystick/Mouse ports. But it does not promote the 86 pin bus thru.
Thus it is an "end terminal". (Note you also cannot plug the Mimetics(sp)
sound sampler into the joystick port on the sidecar since the box would
not fit. You would have to use a nine pin extender cable.

It is true that the Amiga can share the hard disk with the PC. Data is
transferred through the shared memory interface but the shared memory
is not part of "chip" ram so the built in DMA channels can't be used
to copy it around. It is still at "hard disk speeds" though. As an
interesting aside, the 1.2 docs have all sorts of references to "formatting
the hard disk partition."

At the BADGE meeting (the source of all this info) R.J. Mical indicated that
the sidecar had sockets for 2 Meg of *Amiga Ram*. Thus the side car is a
memory expansion card. There was no mention of "zorro" slots in the sidecar
only PC slots. And contrary to previous info on this net R.J. said that
you *could* plug in a PC graphics card and the Sidecar would recognize it
and use it rather than the shared ram. (I am not sure how useful this is
unless the card is an EGA card.)

My conclusions : The sidecar can provide the Amiga with 2 Meg of ram,
a hard disk, a battery backed up clock, and high speed math (via the
8087). That in itself makes it a good buy, add to that the ability to
run PC programs and it seems to be quite a deal. Now if we could
just get Commodore to get it out the door...
