22.0. "Where's the "usenet"?" by ANGORA::SMCAFEE (Steve McAfee) Wed May 14 1986 18:08

       Can someone tell me what/where is the usenet? This doesn't
    really require its own note, but I thought there might be others
    as new as me.

USENET is just a public network like the ARPAnet. There is a mailing list
called "net.micro.amiga" that's somewhat analagous to this notes file, only
a lot more active. Most of the stuff I put on my download disks come from
the USENET.

To get information, do a "DIR ROLL::", and look at some of the DOC and TXT
files there. To subscribe to the ENET redistribution of one of the USENET
lists, look at ROLL::ENETDIS.DOC (or is it .TXT?).

From memory, you send mail:

To:	ROLL::USENET
Subject: subscription

$USELIST ADD MYNODE::ME net.micro.amiga
^Z

And you'll probably be on the next day's distribution.

Help any?

22.3Sources ?NCCSB::JFISHERThu May 22 1986 14:2413

    What about sources ???

    I know that I could nose around, and find the correct 'conference',
    but it will make it easier if someone could name the source conference
    for the Amiga.

    Is it the same procedure as .1, but use 'net.sources.amiga' ???

    Thanks in advance for your help.

22.4more or less ...RAINBO::BANKSDawn BanksThu May 22 1986 14:3919
    generally, if it isn't too big, an author will post the sources
    to his program directly to net.micro.amiga. On the other hand,
    if it's large, it gets posted elsewhere.

    In this case, elsewhere includes net.sources and mod.sources,
    generally. I don't think there's a net.sources.amiga, although there
    may be one soon.

    Right now, I'm subscribed to net.micro.amiga, net.sources and
    mod.sources, and usually get copies of anything that gets posted.
    Just to complicate things a bit, I think there's a bunch of mod.amiga.*
    about to get started, as well as the others.

    (btw - net.sources and mod.sources are interesting, but you also
    get sources to lot of non-amiga related machines. Usually, they're
    sources for Unix utilities, but this morning, mod.sources had a
    Small C compiler, with code generators for 8080, 6809, 68000 and
    (I believe) Vax, so subscribing can be sort of fun. It can also
    soak up a lot of disk space).
22.5New USENET Conferences !!NCCSB::JFISHERWed May 28 1986 13:0724
    I just noticed that there are three new conferences (moderated)
    for the Amiga:

    		mod.amiga
    		mod.amiga.binaries
    		mod.amiga.sources

    I have only recently enrolled, and have not yet started to receive
    anything from these conferences. However, if you would like to submit
    to these conferences, the following USENET addresses are what I
    have come up with...

    		  conference		VAXMAIL Address (To:)
    		mod.amiga		RHEA::DECWRL::"ihnp4!pucc-i!aic"
    		mod.amiga.binaries	RHEA::DECWRL::"ihnp4!ulowell!page"
    		mod.amiga.sources	     "       "        "    "

    Bob Page is the moderator of the mod.amiga conference. Unfortunately,
    I do not know who is the moderator of the .{binaries|sources}
    conferences.

    Hope all of this is accurate and helpful...

22.6How do we get on the distribution?MORRIS::SMCAFEESteve McAfeeThu Jun 05 1986 13:3715

    RE: .5

      For these three new usenet conferences:

        1) Do we still use the "$USELIST ADD NODE::ME conference"
            format?

        2) Is my pathname from this conference more that just "NODE::ME"?
            If so, how do I determine it?

      Thanks,

22.7Another Usenet question.ANT::SMCAFEESteve McAfeeMon Jul 21 1986 13:497

    How do we decode the mod.amiga.binaries programs?
    I have an amigabasic .boo translator will this work?

    Thanks,

    Steve McAfee
22.8Is anyone out there?ANT::SMCAFEESteve McAfeeFri Jul 25 1986 19:597

    Doesn't anyone out there know how to decode the mod.amiga.binaries
    files?

    A new question: Does anyone know how to obtain previously posted
    files to mod.amiga.binaries? (i.e. are they maintained somewhere?).

    .8:

    Send mail to the moderator, and he can either point you at a place
    where they're archived, the person to request copies from, or reforward
    the posting to you.

    Is it still the active amiga conference?

    Steve,

    Ed Featherston had said in the usenet conference (Not sure where
    it is at the moment) that they are upgrading their machines and
    converting the usenet stuff to RDB or something like that. He said
    that he should have the net stufff back by the weekend.
