3.0. "Amiga Survey" by CYBORG::MICKOL (Videographer) Wed Apr 30 1986 21:53

Can everyone out there who has an Amiga please respond to this note with their
hardware and software configuration? I've asked before about printers and have
not gotten a very good response. Do most people not have printers? Anyway, it
would be nice to see how many employees have Amigas. Thanks.

    Our system (VAXWRK::Praetorius and VIKING::Banks):

Amiga with 512K, external disk drive
very old Gemini 10 printer (that hasn't ever done graphics
        correctly on any machine)
Zenith ZVM-135 RGB monitor (shared with the download device)

In addition, we have a "download device", which is something that
runs both Kermit and XModem so I can download everything I get from
the net. The download device is:

Atari 800, 3 disk drives, composit video half of the Zenith
monitor, 4 async ports and a Hayes 1200 baud modem.

We also have the developer's kit on the amiga, which may or may
not be considered a part of the configuration.

3.18Amiga and the Smith Corona D200CYCLPS::GIUSTIMon May 12 1986 20:138
I managed to interface my Amiga with a Smith Corona D200 via the
parallel port and the parallel cable sold by CBM (5' $35.00). True,
the Smith Corona is an Epson clone, but I'll be damned if I can
get the thing to output graphic when using the Preference's Epson
print driver. Also, every time I open the printer buffer, a capital
"K" prints on the paper. It seems to do this no matter what dot-matrix
printer driver I use. Anybody have a suggestion?

3.19Possible AnswerHYSTER::DEARBORNMon May 12 1986 23:1510
I seem to remember when I was buying a printer that Computertown
in Nashua, NH had stopped selling S/C printers with Amigas because
of compatability problems. It seems they need a special driver.
You might try contacting S/C to find out if they know what's up.
As I remember, owners complained about not being able to access
any of the printer's special characterisics, even though the printer
is supposed to be "Epson Compatible."

I have the standard Amiga configuration with 512k memory, VR241
    as color monitor, LA50 printer and LVP16 plotter. I don't have a
driver for the LA50 yet but the generic printer driver is enough
to print text files. I'm using Aegis-Draw to drive the plotter.
This works fine at 1200 baud or less. As for software I have
Aegis-Draw, TextCraft, Analyze, VIP Professional, DeluxPaint and
    MindWalker.

HI, I (or rather my husband) has an Amiga with a Sony TV for a CRT.
I just copied off the driver source to see if we can get our La100
to work with it. We want to try printing some of our delux paint
pictures (alas, no color). Next we plan to try a switch to trade
the printer between the Amiga and the Rainbow which we use for word
processing. My husband will soon start a project to make an AI work
environment for the Amiga. Liesl Kolbe (CSC32::KOLBE)

I've got a relatively new LA100 that works fine with my amiga.
The LA50 printer driver discussed in a previous note works ok except
the underlining or bolding sequence ( I forget which it was).

As far a graphics printer driver for the LA100... I haven't seen
one either. As soon as I get a C compiler I might take a wack
at writing one. If .39 does this successfully I would appreciate
     receiving the source and/or executable.

Hi. I am a recent DEC hire, but a pioneer Amiga owner. (October
    85). I currently own a 512k Amiga, 2nd drive, and Sony kv1311CR
monitor. This monitor is fairly effective at eliminating hi-res
flicker, if one fiddles w/contrast & brightness. I am (gulp) ordering
a 20 meg Tecmar drive, as soon as I can convince my wife that my
life will have no meaning without one. I also want at least 2 meg
external memory. For any Video buffs out there, I recently got
DeluxeVideo...it is a MUST HAVE!!!. I also plan on buying DynamiCAD
as soon as I find the bux. (Better than AutoCAD?)

It is good to see an active Amiga group within DEC, and I hope I
can be of some help in the future. I read all the trade rags, and
am generally in on the latest gossip and rumors circulating on the
    networks.

My system (I have had it for a week):

	Amiga
	Amiga 1080 Monitor
	Commodore 256k Upgrade
	Skyfox
	"Atari standard joystick"
DEC PDT-150 (I like to think of it as an optional 8 inch floppy
drive that plugs into the serial port)
DEC Scholar Modem (on loan from work)

On order:

	Lattice C
	Deluxe Paint

I didn't buy a second disk drive (a big mistake that I hope to fix
soon).

I bought my system from a mail order house named "Starflight
Telemarketing". I'll start a new note containing my impression
of them.

(Some of you might be interested: Originally, about two months ago,
when I started thinking about buying a new computer, I was going to
buy an Atari 1040 ST. I then came across some information about the
Amiga, and decided to research a little further and compare the two
machines. I ultimately decided that the Amiga's multitasking, superior
built-in software, and capacity for expansion far out weighed the
ST's cheaper price and additional memory.)

Another system for comparison:

Amiga A1000 CPU
Amiga A1080 Monitor
1 External floppy drive
1 Comspec 2MB memory board

Software:
Manx C	(yeah)
Lattice C (neah)
Marble Madness (the best games are free, i.e. HACK!)
DPAINT (a gift, I didn't want one until the picture could be larger than
		the screen)

Comments:
The Comspec board is TERRIFIC! How did I ever live without one?
(Especially under V1.2 (beta, haven't used gamma yet); the RAM disk
is much much faster, and the memory auto-configs)

Happy hacking...

The Memory Location, in Wellesley, MA on route 16.
    $5040, including Massachusetts tax. That's about 10%
off the software, plus a $342.50 discount. More details
    are in 754.0.

I made a typo in 3.92: the version of Lattice C is 3.10.

    Right now I have an Amiga 1000 w/ 512K, 2 drives, 1080 monitor,
    and an ATime clock.
Soon (within a month) I intend to add 2 meg, a printer, and a better
    clock (Microbotics).

As for software, mostly games (ahem), but also a C compiler (Lattice,
sadly) and sever PD graphics/sound utilities and demos.

I just picked up a 500 from Omnitek under the Amiga Amazing Offer.
(Strictly speaking, I just picked up ANOTHER 500 - the first one died
after a couple hours.) I went with column A - Deluxe Paint, Aegis
Animator, Textcraft, a publishing package that I forgot the name of,
Marble Madness, and an Epyx joystick - and an external drive. I'm
using the composite video of an 1802 (ugh!) until the Sonys go on
sale at Lechmere's.

I just bought my AMIGA 2000 via mail order from Computer Mail Order,
they were the only ones who claimed to have the complete system.
I am not completely satisfied with thier service, they sent me a
game (SkyFox) which would not run on kickstart 1.2, they sent me
a bad printer cable (which I fixed). They sent me a 5 1/4 hard disk
and no cables then told me it would not work with the AMIGA, I sent
it back and the promised me a 3 1/2 disk which they never delivered.
They actually claimed to have shipped it at one point and a week
later admitted that they did not ship it and had run out. I finally
ordered my drive from GO AMIGO and I hope it will arrive on 10/23.

3.138Summons, sir! Your wife wants a divorce...LEDS::ACCIARDISun Mar 27 1988 00:5046
Well, after 2.5 years of faithful service without a single burp,
hiccup, or hardware glitch, its time to send the old A1000 off to
the glue factory. I'm finally moving up to a shiny new A2000.

What did me in? The MicroWay de-interlacer card coupled with the
new zoomy Zenith 14" flat screen monitor.

I had innocently enough stopped into the Software Shop to see what's
new, and Moe had an A2000 with the most glorious, perfect display
that I've ever seen. I know I sometimes get carried away with the
hyperbole, but this time it's for real. How good is this display
    combination?

It is better than a uVax GPX.
It is better than a monochrome Atari ST.
It is better than a (gasp) Mac II with it's $999 Sony display.

I pressed my nose against the monitor screen. I have 20/13 vision,
and I could not discern a single dot, scan line, or iota of flicker.
I set the colors to black on white, white on black, any obnoxious
combination I could think of, and this display was absolutely without
flaw. In fact, it looked like a large color photograph. I could
go on and on, but words can't do justice here. Go see for yourself.

So, here's the new configuration (as of 3/28/88)

    * A2000 with 3 Megs (I'll be installing the StarboardII inside)

    * MicroWay de-interlacer

    * Zenith model mumble 14" flat screen display (bring lots of money)

    * Miniscribe 20 MB HD (I'll be using the MicroBotics SCSI on the
Starboard, and keeping the Winnie from the Supra. Maybe I can
sell the Supra A1000 SCSI adaptor, case, and power supply?)

    * Dual internal floppies (can't stand three disk swaps to copy a
      floppy, and I don't need a 5 1/4" device to emulate a computer
      that makes me vomit)

So, that's it for now. Moe will be giving me $800 trade-in for
my current stuff, minus the hard drive. I would have done better
during the trade up deal, but what the hay, money was made to be
    spent.

    Re .138 and .140:
Could you post the model number of the Zenith monitor and the prices
of the monitor and deintrlace card? Can they be used with a A1000?
Is there a cable problem, for example?
    Thanks
3.142Changes to .138LEDS::ACCIARDITue Mar 29 1988 13:2057
I made some last minute changes to the configuration in .138 when
I arrived to pick up my system.

I did not buy the Zenith monitor. Although it is by far the best
display I've seen yet, I spoke with some knowledgeable people who
    gave me some additional info:

The Zenith is not a multi-scan type monitor. It uses a fixed 31.5KHz
horizontal scan rate. This is compatible with the MicroWay board,
which bumps the video output up to this frequency. It is also
compatible with the new IBM VGA mode and the Mac II. I felt that
for the enormous price of this monitor ($795, best mail order $700)
I wanted to capability to use higher scan rates should computer
    video rate change again.

Another potential problem: to achieve the brightness and clarity
that this monitor provides, they drive the phosphor up to 50% harder
than a conventional display. This means that burn-in of the display
    could be a problem.

The third reason? The case is an off-yellow. Sounds silly, but
try explaining that to my sense of aesthetics. It looked rather
ugly sitting on a biege A2000. Plus, no tilt 'n swivel.

I ended up getting a Princeton Ultrasync for $579. It also has
800 x 600 dots and has some really nice features, like 8 different
    combos of default text/background colors.

It's colors are not as vivid as the Zenith, but the text is great.
It has a dot pitch of .28 mm, tighter than any except Sony's .26.
It has a built in tilt 'n swivel stand, and matches the A2000's
    front bezel color nicely.

So, what did I do with the extra money? I sprung for a 65 MB,
38 ms Seagate ST-277N embedded SCSI drive and a C Ltd controller.
This combination cost $800. I could have gotten it cheaper by buying
the drive from Computer shopper for around $500, but Moe had one
    in stock.

One comment about the C Ltd formatting software; the current version
is set up to talk to an ST type drive with an Adaptek type controller.
We could not deep format the embedded SCSI drive. We ended up
downloading a new version from C Ltd's BBS to get the drive formatted.

To answer the questions of .141, the MicroWay board costs $495.
It is essentially a 12 plane display that can store two entire 6
plane displays and combine them. Models are planned for the A1000
and A500, but these models will not support HAM mode. The A2000
has all twelve color bits available in it's video slot. The A1000
    and A500 versions WILL support 640 x 400 x 4 planes. All models
will require a multi-scan type monitor. This ain't a bad investment
anyway, since the multi-scans are the way to go.

Hope this answers most of the nagging questions.

20Mb Supra has caused me nothing but problems. I recommend staying

Okay, okay... I finally broke down and did it. I'm now the proud
father of a new Amiga. Current system configuration is as follows:

	Amiga 500 with A501(?) 512k memory expansion
	Commodore 1080 monitor
3 1/2 inch external disk drive
LA75 printer (assuming I can get it working... Gotta make a cable.)

Software so far is:
	Deluxe Music
	Adventure game - Fairy Tale
lots of PD stuff (seems like every Amiga owner's got this.)
	etc...

I plan to by MIDI interface stuff in the near future. My wife is a
professional musician so we own a fairly nice electronic piano (Roland 450
Piano plus). I'm also gonna buy either an animation package or a 3-d sculpting
package... or maybe both. :-] But I gotta pace these investments or I'm gonna
come home one day and find my Amiga blown all over the room, a smoking 357
lying beside it, a suicide note taped to the screen, and a wife who just smiles
innocently. 8-0

Actually, that flicker is NECESSARY and REQUIRED for desktop video. It
is exactly what everyone's TV is doing all the time. If you are viewing
digitized photos or anything else with smooth shading, the flicker becomes
unnoticeable, just as it does on a TV. You are right that the 400 line
display is pretty unusable for text or any other high contrast display.

    now consists of,

    Amiga 500 + addition 1/2 Meg + Clock.
    External 3.5 inch drive.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of you Amiga Noters for

like to thank Ed whose response to my Atari V Amiga question persuaded
me to buy an Amiga. That was really good advice ! Thanks again and have

Guess what, here's another one. Talk about shy! Guess I've been
working too hard. All work and no play, but I do read these notes.

H/W	A1000, 512K, 3 years old, kept it for posterity
	A2000, 1M, 1 year old, 40M Miniscribe (2nd one, first one died)

S/W	Boy, without the list in front of me this will be tough.
I've been developing software, so everything I buy is
deductible, so I buy a lot of software.
SuperBase Professional (just started using it, it's good)
Magellan - a brand new AI package (Expert System Developer)
	DPaintII
DVideoII (never used, anybody want to buy it?)
MaxiPlan Plus (I love this, it's so easy to use)
WordPerfect (can't wait for graphics version)
Manx Aztec C (old version, gotta update to SLD)
Very few games, but recently added Mind Walker and StarGlider

I've put my software into the public domain, it's under the name of
Neuro Dynamics, a company I'm in the process of dissolving. You
might see "The Attitude Engineer" or "C.A.R.E.S." (that's Computer
Aided Release of Emotional Stress) floating around. Each takes an
entire floppy. Anybody want to arc it and upload it? I'm not up

    Amiga A2000
    2 Floppies
    MiniScribe 80meg drive & 1090A controller & fast file

I've been noting in this conference for some time now and guess I'd
better fess up my configuration. I originally had an A1000 which I
upgraded to a A2000 a year ago during a Commodore trade up plan.

    System:
    	A2000 dual 3.5" floppies, A2090 harddisk controller with 35mb
full height hard disk sitting naked next to the 2000,
		A2620 68020 processor accelerator with 68881, memory
management and 2mb 32 bit ram, A2088 bridgeboard with
5 1/4 floppy drive internal and 3 1/2 floppy drive
external, CGA graphics card for the PC side of things,
and flicker fixer with NEC multisync II monitor for display.

    Misc. hardware:
Okimate 20 color printer, Digital LA50 printer, LA120 printer,
Perfect Sound, Digi-View Gold, Color Splitter, Digi-droid,
Digi-view digitizing stand, Panasonic 1410 B/W camera, home
built Midi interface, and an assortment of Midi driven devices
	(keyboard, drum machine, effects etc.).

    Software:
Lattice C, DPaint-II, DMCS, Deluxe Video, Perfect Sound, Digi-View,
	PixMate, Sonix, Piles of games.

3.202Newborn A500 - Which disks to add?BELFST::MCCLINTOCKPeterTue Jan 17 1989 20:5929
I purchased an A500 for my use and for my children also (ages 6,8
    & 9).

    System: A500, 512k
Monitor: Sony Trinitrons (SCART input) 14in and 27in
    Software: Deluxe Video
    			Starglider II
    			Out Run
Various PD software from the net.

The effect is great on the 27in Trinitron but I guess a monitor
would be better for general use.

I have lasted three weeks without a second disk drive, which is
just about the limit of my endurance.

Is there anything to choose between the various add-on disks available
ie. NEC, Cumana, Citizen etc. or do they all perform about the same?

If anyone has any experience to offer please mail me.

My intention as far as the children are concerned is to get them
familiar with drawing, composing, word processing and basic programming
etc. Interest has been great so far...

YA!! (Scream! Make loud excited kinds of noises!) I've been waiting
to post this reply for about 5 months now!

Yes folks, I finally done it. I've taken the plunge and upgraded.
My new setup is/will be as follows:

Amiga 2000 stock with 1 meg and 1 floppy
GVP Hardcard, 40 meg, 11 ms. access time Quantum drive
    Mitsubishi DiamondScan multisync monitor

That's all I've got for now. I ordered a multisync in anticipation
of the enhanced chipset and/or a flickerfixer. Of course I've still
got all my PD software, but aside from that I've got

    	PHA$AR
    	DMCS
    	StarGlider II
    	Fairy Tale Adventure
    	Bard's Tale II
    	I don't remember what else...

BTW, John Sauter was right about how to get your spouse to buy in
on the idea of an upgrade. I asked for the new computer equipment
and she was skeptical, so I asked for golf clubs, fishing tackle,
and hunting supplies... She suggested instead that I put the money
into a something that would keep me closer to home... like an upgrade
for my Amy. Thanx John. :-]

re: .215---Any time, John. To give credit where it is due, my wife
    suggested the approach.

re: .92---Today I took delivery of the A2620 I ordered several weeks
ago. Installation was moderately difficult: you have to remove a blank
plate from the back of the A2000, a fact not mentioned in the manual.
Also, the fit is very tight. It took some finagaling to get it seated
in such a way that the rear plate screws would seat.

However, it seems to work fine. I have tried a bunch of things, and so
far I have found no compatibility problems. The workbench screen now
claims that I have an additional 2 MB of memory. Opening the hard disk
from Workbench now takes 5 seconds instead of 6. However, reading a
file into MultiPlan is _lots_ faster.

I tried the double mouse button feature, and it successfully boots
using the 68000, so if I do find a compatibility problem I can always
reboot to run the old software.

    John,

Run the latest version of the Walker Demo on the A2620. You will
notice a major difference vs. the 68000. Jet and Flight II runs most of
the time on the A2620 and performs like a real simulator. Falcon won't
    even run on the 20.

my Subaru wagon decided to self-destruct to the tune of exactly $1400,
which by some galactic coincidence was the price that Moe was going to
sell me a 2620 board for.

    Gidday,

Hmmm, I've got an old 1000, with 1081 monitor, no extra floppy, but
if I can talk my old site into it a free RD-53, ripped out of microVAX,
and a variety of VIC-20's and C-64, in various stages of decay (bad
very dumb terminals..) and the Amy 1000 has 512K, (Ohh well)

As for software, well I'm not too sure, I seem to be sending more and
more time on these VAX type things, so obviously C, XLisp, I did have
a ASM, but I've seemed to have lost the disk, and few games, of which
I can't remember (I hardly ever play games..), so there you are...
there is probably more software, but usually only use Lattice Screen
Editor and Lattice C so I tend to forget these sort of things...

Something I read recently makes me think this won't work on an A500,
though it should on an A2000. (That doesn't mean I won't try it! 8^)
If one DOES HAVE an A500 with an "obese" Agnus chip, the article I was
reading claimed that mother board changes are needed to let Agnus
operate this way AND that such changes make it MANDATORY for the A501
RAM expansion to be present for the system to boot.

Well, I did it. I traded my 3 1/2 year old A1000, 1010 external drive,
2Mb Starboard w/MFM plus C= 64, 1541 and assorted other junk in for:

    A2000
    2 internal 3 1/2" drives
A2058 Memory expansion populated with 2Mb

    to go with:
    Supra 2400 baud modem
    amplifier and speakers
    A1080 Monitor
    Panasonic KX-P1124 24-pin printer

    Expansions to come:

Bridgeboard (can't stand MS-DOS, but all of my classes require it)
    A2090 controller (local dealer getting out of the Amiga business;
    			I can prctically STEAL it)
hard drive (as big as I can afford; getting tired of sifting through
    			hundreds of floppies)

I kind of hated to part with my 1000. After all, I had had it so long
it had become one of the family. When I bought it, I had this beat-up
old Datsun. I took my fiance' along with me because we were running
errands. The monitor box was too big to fit in the trunk or the back
seat, so it got to ride in the front seat while my fiance' had to sit
in the back. I never heard the end of her "taking a back seat to your
damn computer". As it turned out, the Amiga 1000 outlasted the
marriage. Funny, though she squawked about my computer, one of the
first things she did after we split up was to go out and buy a used
1000! Can't say much for her choice of husbands, but her taste in
    computers is impeccable!

      	a Panasonic P1124 printer, which I like a lot, but I am
sure I am not getting everything out of it. I used to have a
LA100 which was rather dull for an AMIGA!

I mostly use it for Modula2 program development, but I also have

Feeling cramped, I recently added a 105-megabyte Quantum to my setup.
It's in a Supra external box, with its own power supply. It connects
to the Amiga through the 25-pin SCSI connector on the back of the
system box, and is controlled by the A2090 that is still controlling
the original 40MB drive, which is internal.

100Meg 3 1/2" drive and a 60 Meg 5 1/2" st506 drive on an adaptec. Having all
that inside the case is kinda nice. It's got a Telebit Trailblazer+, an Epson
JX-80, an external drive (to go to Second Amiga later), a CBM 1084, and a
Perfect Sound 3.0 hanging off of it on the outside.

Second Amiga:
An A1000 with an ASDG Mini-Rack C containing an unpopulated 8Meg card attached
to the side. Random monochrome monitor and daisy-wheel printer attached. This
system is in pieces after a recent move, and will be re-assembled when my wife
makes space for it on her desk. After that, she'll get the external drive
and 2 meg of ram (either new or from the 2000). If we feel up to it, she
may also get the trumpcard (it'll fit in the ASDG box) and a 20Meg HD. For
now, _she_ doesn't feel she uses the machine enough to justify the HD.

Oh yeah - the second machine's got the CBM A1300 genlock on it nowdays...

3.271cheapest simulator, by farNEWVAX::ZIMMERMANNDCO, Washington D.C.Wed Apr 25 1990 02:0113
Just bought an AMIGA myself. Went to a local software (game) house,
looking for a good game system. I was told to look at the AMIGA (he
didn't sell AMIGA software, only MAC/IBM games, so I figured I better
check it out). Well, I bought a system the same day:

    	A500 w/ 1Meg

GRAVIS joystick (I recommend it highly)

I have since bought several simulators, of which I judge Falcon as the

Well, my ACC questions got irrelevanted by an offer I couldn't refuse. A
Ronin H2000 w/ 68020 & 68881 & 14MHz for $275. Note that the A2500 clone
config below may be for sale. Read on if you're interested in such. The
Ronin card is close to exactly what I wanted - except it's not as much
CPU as I wanted to start with. Memory daughter board can be added for
< 1/2 the cost of the GVP memory card, it uses 1Mx4 or 256Kx4 dips so adding
memory is cheap, and it can be had unpopulated so you don't have to pay
someone else to plug in dips. Finally, H.E.L.L. (the designers) advertise
a 28MHz '030 upgrade for $300 (basically, this turns it into an H2800).

Primary machine:

A2000 w/ fat agnus & 1 meg of chip ram
	ProRam 2000 8Meg card, stocked to 4Meg
	Trumpcard SCSI controller
	Ronin H2000 '020/'881 card
	100 Meg CP3100 (aka rz23) and segate 60Meg 5" hard disks
	one internal floppy
	one aging 1080 monitor

Second machine, waiting for desktop space
A1000 with .5Meg of chip ram
ASDG minirack C, hacked to provide power for disk controllers
ASDG 8Meg card, stocked to 0Meg
	external & internal floppies
	Daisy-wheel printer
	Amdek Amber monitor

And finally:
Random 20Meg 3" SCSI external drive.

The A2000 - with the 20Meg replacing the 100Meg - may be for sale. Contents
of the CPU box only, not the monitor or printer. Should be around $2500,
and will not be parted out. Drop me a note if you're interested to gain
right of first refusal when/if it goes on sale.

I've been reading this file for quite some time and as part of my
"low profile image" resisted entering a reply here. My configuration
is not getting any smaller, so I may was well get it entered now.

System 1

Vanilla A1000 with 512K and non EHB denise. A Commodore referb at
a super price.

1084 monitor with a mild version of the "popping" problem that I
have not bothered to fix yet (dave!).

System 2

A500 with super agnus and denise, A501 expansion, C-Ltd SCSI500,
MAST minimegs (2meg)

    ECE Midi interface.

Samsung 14" multisynch (which I would like to sell about $250)

System 3

A2000 with super agnus and denise, HardFrame 2000 SCSI, A2630
with 2 meg 32 bit memory, Microway flickerFixer.

    DiamondScan Monitor 1381AUM.

Anchor 2400E non-MNP5 modem; I got sick of problems with Scholar
modems (including Scholar Plus).

System 4

A3000 with added in 2 meg page mode ram (for System 3 A2630 when
I get some 1 meg by 4 static column rams).

    NEC 3d Monitor.

Systems 3 and 4 have the loan of a few Ethernet cards; Ameristar,
Commodore, and ASDG. They run fast.

Systems 2,3 and 4 share a common SCSI bus. System 2 has been
mostly disconnected from the SCSI since I moved my Amigas to a new
room. Most of my SCSI disk is external. About half a gig.

For sound I use a Sansui QRX3500 quad stereo reciever and altec
speakers. I also use a couple pairs of A10 speakers. A fine small
speaker at a fine small price!

    There it is!

and an external 20meg Supradrive and Panasonic 1080i printer. This

never shut off.

In February I got a 2000HD (2091 plus 40meg 19ms Quantum). In March I
added a GVP 3001 card w/ 28MH 68030, 28MH '882 and 4meg of 80ns nibble

additional memory is 4 Mb of 1 meg x 4 ZIPs). It is a 25 MHz with 40

A few changes:

The C-Ltd and MiniMegs have been moved to the A1000.

The A500 now has an A590 with 2MB

The A3000 now has 10MB w/8MB 1MX4 Static Column zips
It also has an ASDG LAN Rover Ethernet card.

The A2630 will be upgraded to 4MB RSN (got the chips, just need to solder)
The A2000 has an Ameristar Ethernet card
It also now has a Supra 2400ZI - with no problems at all!

Acquired a Digiview and Canon ZAPshot still video camera; it moved between

       Supergen genlock and mixer
Sony KV1131R multipurpose monitor (when I can't use the FlickerFixer)
       DigiView with DigiDroid
       Panasonic camera with tripod

   To be added:
Magnetically shielded speakers w/amp. Sugguestions welcome!

I've been waiting a long time before buying this system. (Basically, I
was disappointed with the A3000's lack of improved video, so when I came
across a good deal on a used system, I snapped it up. Thanks, Ed!)

So, I'll be posting notes on other topics about my integration problems,
and tap into the vast font of AMIGA notes wisdom! Hopefully, my learning
curve will be steep and short.

Oh, I plan on using this system for doing animations, and supporting the

I just picked up a new A3000/25-50 educational bundle last night.
This includes a 1950 monitor and a coupon (sigh) for Amiga vision.
I also bought the A10 speakers. I moved the 1 meg of fast ram to
the second meg of chip ram and installed 4Mb of 256kx4 Static
Column 80ns ZIPs which I got from BJS Electronics for $6/chip
(Thanks again for the pointer mike meyer).

A couple hours into use, the keyboard started locking up. I'm
taking it into Memory Location for a replacement from their stock
this afternoon. I hope its just the keyboard and not a cia or
something in the system box.

Only other disturbing thing is that the attached 1950 cable
looked used and the serial number was low. I suspect I got a
monitor which was sent back and repaired. Even though I think
they should have cleaned it up better, it seems to work very well
and I'm not going to make a big deal. A unit that's come in for
repair has probably seen better scrutiny than one right off the
factory floor. I had heard there were two versions of the 1950.
Does anyone know how to tell the difference?

Here's my upgraded system configuration, updating 3.243:

    Amiga 500	(512K Agnus)
    SupraRam A501 board
    External AIR drive
    C=2002 monitor
GVP Series II A500 HD+ (40 meg 1" Fujitsu drive)
(This is one of those new low profile GVP units that matches
the lines of the 500. Just received it today.)
2 add'l meg of RAM plugged into the GVP, giving me 3MB of memory.
(Ability to put up to 8MB into this unit).
    Panasonic KX-P1091 printer
    Scholar modem (DEC-supplied)
    Mouse Master
Pair of Radio Shack amplified speakers w/ built in equalizer

This configuration should keep me happy for quite some time (at least til
I want more memory) :-) Sure is nice to see QMouse reporting well over
2.5MB free. Next upgrade piece will be a 1 meg Agnus.

This is a listing of my Amiga system.
A500 with 3Megs of memory, 20 meg Supradrive,2 floppies, RGB monitor,
Epson FX800 printer (color), and MIDI interface.
It is connected to a Yamaha music system consisting of a PF2000 piano,
TX81Z generator, FB01 generator, rhythm generator, effects unit and of
course a 16 channel mixer to handle all of this. This sounds real nice
on a set of 15 inch infinity monitors.
The last time I checked there were over 100 disks of software including
most of Dr. T's good stuff for operating the Yamaha in my desk.
It took a lot of O.T. to buy all of this over the last few years.

Radio Shack TV Set/Monitor (takes in RS170 video, does a nice job)
    A501 Memory board

We've also got an Epson RX80P (?) printer in the basement, but haven't
much of a clue as to how to get the right cable (or even make one).

Just getting our feet wet and looking forward to lots of fun. We
also bought a home financial management package, but I forgot the
name of it. A bit disappointed with the software selection in

3.316Me again...CX3PST::WSC160::D_WHITEI'm patient if it doens't take very longTue Feb 26 1991 06:3030
Well, here I am for the 3rd time. I have partially replaced the system
    that I had stolen (see 4516). My dealer had a trade-in for a 3000
which had a lot of the stuff I wanted, so I took the plunge. My
withdrawl is finally beginning to subside. I got:

    A2000 with 1 Mb Agnus
    2 internal floppies
80 Mb Seagate 5 1/4 hard drive in the lower expansion bay
    Trumpcard controller for hard drive
Microbotics 8UP memory expansion, 2Mb populated
    Boing! optical mouse
    Microway FlickerFixer
    NEC Multisync monitor

To be added in the near future:

A2286 Bridgeboard, but will have to mount the accompanying 5 1/4
floppy externally, since the drive bay is already full
    Supra 2400zi internal modem

I'm debating whether or not to get another hard drive for the PC side.
Previously, I had 40 Mb on each side of the A2088 bridgeboard. Now,
I have 80Mb, but it is all on the Amiga side. I know that it is
possible to create an MS-DOS partition on an Amiga drive, but I had
no luck doing that previously and the price of PC hard cards was
pretty reasonable, so I wimped out and got a separate drive. I guess
it will depend on how generous the insurance company is with the
    settlement.

Now I decided ( My wife said OK !!!) to acquire a brand new A3000.
    	It's a 25 MHz with 2Mb Chip+ 4Mb Fast ( It is really fast!). I also
have the 50 Mb Quantum and the 1950 Monitor. No more floppy loading, no

It contains 1) 40 meg Quantium and 2) a 380 meg HP drives
(getting some problems on the 2091 with both drive connected. I've
checked and it has the V6.1 ROMS but still has the proto SCSI chip!!!)

I've also go an 8-UP full populated BUT can only access 4 megs

With pre-6.6 ROMs in the 2091 keep reselect on the drives off.

Send dave haynie mail. He said a relatively simple pal change can place the
32 bit ram outside of the autoconfig space, and allow 8 meg of 16 bit ram.
The down side is for 32 bit ram to be DMAable it needs to be within the
autoconfig space, so no DMA to 32 bit memory with this hack.

No such hack for the 8-up since it lives on the zorro II bus which has only
24 bits of address.

Read Note 4894.3 for the official statement from Commodore on how to
determine if the WD chip on the 2091 requires the new ROM in order
to handle multiple devices with reselection on.

You can work around the problem by going into the HdToolBox programs
and using the edit disk type (or whatever its called) to set the
disk to "Does not support reselection."

Unfortunately, with the copy of HdToolBox I had with 1.3, the side
effect of this is that it causes HdToolBox to think you have wiped
out the partition info. So, copy down the low and high cylinder
information about all of your partitions so you can restore it
after setting no reselection.

Workbench 2.0 comes with programs to enable reselection or disable it
for all your disks without disturbing partition info.
