177.0. "Canadian Football" by FTMUDG::REED (Sutton+Houston=1992NCAAChamps) Fri Aug 02 1991 13:05

I was able to watch part of the 2nd half of the Toronto/British
Columbia game last night (until I started to nod out too much).

Fluttie really is playing good ball in the CFL. At about the
start of the 4th quarter he had racked up 350 yard (metric yards
too, isn't it?) His scrambling is perfect for the game up there,
    too.

The "Rocket" was doing ok too, until he tried to run a kick back
and a tackler stepped in front of him. The tackler didn't give
an inch but the Rocket bounced straight back about 8' and fell
on his butt--dropping the ball. I really can't see him making
it in the NFL--if he gets the chance--he's too light.

Overall, the game was full of action. There were several long-
    gaining plays.

177.5Flutie looked like he was having a lot of fun..BC Won it OT.DECWET::METZGERPennant race in Seattle ?Fri Aug 02 1991 22:1231
We get CBC here in Seattle and this being re-run season and the wife out
shopping with the out-laws I watched the CFL game between the BC Lions (flutie)
and the Toronto Argonauts (raghib Ismail).

I'll have to say that the CFL is ideally suited to flutie. Lots of improvising,
Wide open offense, QB options and most of all athletes that are relativly
normal sized. I mean the offensive and defensive linemen are big but they aren't
grain fed steroid inflated blimps over 300 lbs like the NFL. Since the game is
more wide open they have to be in better shape than the NFL linemen, I didn't
see a player out there with a gut like Bubba Paris or Jumbo Elliot.

With the offense limited to 3 downs you don't see the 3 yards and a cloud of
dust offense like the Giants use. I found the game a lot more exciting than
a typical NFL game. It seemed to go a lot quicker because of the lack of
timeouts, especially TV timeouts.

It's obvious that the more skilled positions are better played in the NFL,
especially QB and wide receiver. But we're actually thinking about taking a
trip to BC to see one of the CFL games.... it looks like a lot of fun.

THe owners should stay off the sideline however, John Candy and the rest of
the ownership consortium were prominantly displayed on the sidelines.

BTW - Ismail did nothing except botch a kickoff return (recovered by BC in OT
to seal the game) They threw him a lot of long passes all which fell
incomplete. He's going to be a bust in the CFL the same way he was going
to be a bust in the NFL, the same way Tim Brown is a bust in the NFL....

Metz,

Let's give the guy a chance to adapt - making the transition from College to
the Pros is bad enough, but having to adapt to the Canadian game as well is
a lot to swallow in one go!

I stick with what I said when his name and the CFL first came up in the same
sentence: He's gonna run wild with that wider field.

sure he'll run wild but first he has to learn how to catch the ball...

if he was playing for me I'd use him at tailback, pitch the ball to him
 and let him sweep.

There's been a lot of news in the paper here in Portland this last
week about the CFL being interested in expanding to Portland and
a couple of other American cities. I think a CFL team would work
here in Portland. There are a lot of starved football fans here,
many of which make the trek up to Seattle to watch the Seahawks.
The only thing is, if Portland gets a CFL team, it pretty much
eliminates them from NFL prospects. What a delema!

    Glen.
p.s. the other cities the CFL were talking about expanding to are
         Sacremento, Fargo(yes Fargo), and Syracuse.

Subject: CFL makes pass at U.S. cities
Date: Thu, 12 Nov 92 10:53:13 PST

TORONTO (UPI) -- The Canadian Football League, ailing financially and
looking for new markets, wants to expand to several American cities,
including Portland, Ore.; Sacramento, Calif., and San Antonio.
Commissioner Larry Smith said Thursday other U.S. cities to have
expressed interest are: San Jose, Calif.; Memphis, Tenn.; Jacksonville,
Orlando and St. Petersburg, Fla., Honolulu; Birmingham, Ala.; and Las
Vegas, Nev.
The league is also hoping to expand in Canada to Montreal, which had
a CFL team and later a World League team, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Smith said new teams could be in place as early as next season. He
said the league is targeting mid-size American cities that either had a
franchise in the defunct World League or ones that want football or
other professional sports but can't get them.
``The demise of the WLAF has created a window of opportunity,'' Smith
said. ``There's a real hunger for football in cities that will never
have NFL football.''

Thanks Mac! I missed that tidbit. Would they still call it the Canadien Football
League - that's what I wonder.

What a boon to the careers of football players everywhere. More jobs. A chance
to increase their skill set by learning new rules, and the chance to interact
with our friends to the North.

Great idea.

177.12CFL considered expanding 2 years agoSALES::THILLTue Nov 17 1992 17:0018
I had heard that the CFL was looking into northern cities like
Portland, Ore. and Souix Falls/Rapid City, SD as long ago as a couple of
    years ago.

Since the NFL decided not to do the World League anymore, who are they
to complain if'n the CFL takes a couple of potential cities away.
Anyway, if'n Memphis gets a team for a few years, and eventually the
NFL later comes through, I'd guess that they would just move the CFL team.

Montreal had the CFL Alouettes for many years, but they, along with
(almost) the rest of the league were run into the ground by Nelson
Skalbania, aka the Canadian George Steinbrenner. The Als were revived
for a year or 2 as the Concordes, but folded soon after. Le Machine,
the World League team got decent crowds, so that looks like the most
obvious CFL addition. With an 8-team league, it probably doesn't hurt to
get a little new competition going.

Subject: Flutie leads Calgary to Grey Cup
Date: Sun, 29 Nov 92 18:46:35 PST

TORONTO (UPI) -- Doug Flutie threw for 480 yards and two touchdowns to
lead the Calgary Stampeders to a 24-10 victory over the Winnipeg Blue
Bombers in the Grey Cup, the championship game of the Canadian Football
	League.
Dave Sapunjis and Allen Pitts caught touchdown passes from Flutie and
Mark McLaughlin kicked three field goals to lead the Stampeders, who
beat Edmonton 23-22 in the Western Division title game last week.
Flutie, who has thrown for over 5,000 yards in each of the last two
seasons, signed with the Stampeders as a free agent prior to the season
and led Calgary to its first Grey Cup triumph since 1971. The Stampeders
lost 36-21 to the Toronto Argonauts in last season's Grey Cup.
Flutie won the 1984 Heisman Trophy while at Boston College but was
unsuccessful as an NFL quarterback with the Chicago Bears and New
England Patriots. He also played with the New Jersey Generals of the
	now-defunct United States Football League.

Still, about half the AFC can use a quarterback, any quarterback. I
think Flutie could come back and play in the NFL at a marginal but not

I've been home sick the last couple of days, and I saw that game on SC.

Flutie was on FIRE. He made some really great passes, was highly mobile,
and the fans love him up there.

It was the 3rd time the Calgary Stampeders won the Grey Cup. Flutie
was names Player of the Year (and got a nice car for that).....

Interesting stuff, that Canadian football. If you kick a field goal
that goes wide, and the opposing team downs it in the end zone instead
of running it out, you get a point.

Also, there's all kinds of forward motion towards the line of scrimmage
prior to the snap, by the receivers.....

I think the reason Flutie left the BC Lions was that the owner was too
cheep to pay him, even though he led the Lions to a good season and
bosted attendance. Calgary came up with the big 80-cent pieces (that's
what a Canajin $ is worf) and signed him up.

I like the Canajin game with unlimited motion. Another BIG difference
IMO is that there is only 20 seconds betwen plays, so the playerd get
right up and get back to the huddle. Keeps the game moving, unlike the
NFL, where 45 seconds gives players all day to mill around like cattle.

Don't forget having only THREE downs to move the ball 10 yards. You
get first and second downs, and then you punt if you don't make it.

I didn't see a lot of running, but there was a lot of passing.

Oh yeah, and there's 12 men per team.....
