    Steve,

From someone who has already walked the plank: If it does happen, keep
your head up. There is life after Digital. But I'm already going
    through ::SPORTS withdrawel symptoms.

It's to late for me to help since I'm already out of here. But if by
the off chance that your a software type interested in consulting I
might have something to throw your way. Part of my official TFSO
package was a 8 page brochure for:

    	The Computer Merchant Ltd.
    	80 Washington St.
    	Norwell, MA 02061
    	(617) 878-4712

Funny thing is that Digital has negotiated an agreement where former
Digital employees can be subcontracted back to Digital. Needless to
say, that sparked a whole round of speculation about the future of
    services and system integration.

If your a hardware type, well there's always Bell Atlantic. I hear
    their hiring. B^)

Wish you luck at finding a job within Digital. Too many are leaving
    already.

Thanks guys. Kev if you think that this has stopped your more
looney than I thought! 8^) 15,000, how does that number grab you?
Mike I have a resume done up on decwrite It's a comin' your way,
it's a postscript file. Denny your right at least I have until
the end of the month and I should be thankful for that, but unfortunately
the way I found out was quite distressing, I'll just leave it at that.
After 13 years in DEC it's going to be quite a transistion! It's hard
to fathom right now, I am feeling resentment and bitterness and I
really feel like hitting something, HARD.

Good luck dude. Stranger things have happened, I have friends who pulled it
out of the fire on shorter notice than you. I'll ask my engineering friends
here if they know of anything.

We had some good grins at the last season's Tigermania, driving in from
Littleton with Glenn.

Scott, in my last life I used ot hire folks from The Computer Merchant all
the time. They are generally recognized as the top "body shop" in the area
for contract programmers.

Good to hear that about The Computer Merchant. They've already
subcontracted me back to Digital for a day or two doing the same thing
    I have always been doing.

Its funny, in the 3 weeks since I've been layed off I've been as busy
as I was when I was employeed. I have talked personally to most of my
customers, registered a business name, had 3 interviews, made
agreements with 2 consulting firms, done a week of consulting, sent out
2 more quotes, and mailed what seems like 50 resumes. And I thought
unemployment was laying around the house reading want adds. B-)

    Digger,

Sorry to be cluttering up your fairwell note, but hopefully I am giving
the impression that there is opportunety out there. Digital has been
fair with a package which gives you a comfortable job search window.
And once you get into the swing of things it will turn around. (I
sincerly hope - it did for me.) And more power to you to find an
    interal position.

    Just a comment for technoweenies_in_danger.

There is a multi-million dollar, nay , make that hundreds of million
dollars in the migration/conversion marketplace. For example, Prime
computers, Wang and others to another platform are targetted by DEC to
bring in ~600 Million this year.

Almost all of these are contracted out to independent 3rd parties.

Once you write a conversion program, it's easy work and lots of money.

From : BOB SCHMITT, U.S. SALES SUPPORT MANAGER, DTN 264-5662

 SUBJ: REMOTE SALES SUPPORT (1-800-DEC-SALE)

**** Please share this message with all field employees ***

A decision was recently announced to close Remote Sales Support in
   the U.S. Area.

Feedback from the U.S. field organization, product management, and
many other organizations is that Remote Sales Support is an integral
part of the support infrastructure which saves the field selling
time, and allows them to spend more time with customers.
We have heard from scores of people about the responsiveness and
   effectiveness of this organization.

We have listened to your concerns and plan to retain the Remote Sales
Support group, because you view them as providing a valuable set of
   support services.

It is a tribute to the quality and importance of the work performed
by Remote Sales Support, that so many people took the time to let
us know how much the function was appreciated and needed.

   Regards,

   Bob

We have not heard but then again I wouldn't be suprised if we are saved.

We all have shaved our haids and bought a extra supply of KY jelly and now
this ?

I could always use this on the managers. Cause they might just have to beg me
to work as hard for this company again.

Uninformed and still looking for a company that cares about it's workers.

>Uninformed and still looking for a company that cares about it's workers.

I am beginning to believe that the days of a company caring about its
workers are long gone. I don't understand why.

I mean, a happy, well cared for employee is a more productive one, no doubt.
But the days of a boss really caring about an employee, and going out of
his or her way to help the employee are a thing of the past, just like
the Model T.

I saw Stephen King on TV yesterday morning and he said that writing was
the best job in the world. I'm sure he's right about that, because he
works for himself.

On Thanskgiving Day, I had an interesting discussion with a friend, about
how the days of a person staying with a company for 30 years and retiring
are also long gone. I'd say the average person in this industry jumps
around every 5 years or so.

That makes it interesting in terms of vacation (always stuck at 2 weeks
per year) and in terms of pension options. It seems to me that there
are some rather radical changes taking place in the American workplace.

Saw,

I wish it were true. There are still plenty of companies that care about
their employees. In fact the majority of the customers that I work for
seem to like their employer and their job quite a bit.

If we were to contact the people that worked with Dan'l and Bob Hunt
you'd find them at some of these companies, Glaxo and SAS, just to name a
couple.

It's Digital that has gone from what used to be an excellent company to
one wherein it can't even figure out who it's trying to lay off.

The big hit is expected here beginning Monday. There is no
confirmation of numbers and not even a hint as to who may be

month ago we were reassured (lied to) about our status, and lips
are so tight that when the axe falls, it will be from behind and
unexpected for the most part. It'll be tough sleeping this weekend.

		Game Called
            by Grantland Rice

	Game called.
Across the field of play the dusk is come,
the hour is late, the fight is done
and lost or won the player files out through the gate.
The tumult dies, the cheer is hushed,
The stands are bare, the park is still,
But through the night there shines the light
of home beyond the silent hill.

	Game called.
Where in the golden light the bugle rolled the reveille
The shadows creep where night falls deep
And Taps has called the end of play.
The game is done, the score is in,
The final cheer and jeer have passed,
But in the night, beyond the fight,
The player finds his rest at last.

	Game called.
Upon the field of life the darkness gathers far and wide.
The dream is done, the score is spun
That stands forever in the guide.
	Nor victory, nor yet defeat
is chalked against the player's name,
But down the roll, the final scroll,
shows only how he played the game.

    Howdy,

Haven't had a chance to note last couple days, figured I'd check in
again. As Bruce said, this is one note where it's no fun to say "I got
reply 100". To all you other people who've been hit, my sympathies and
best wishes. Tomorrow will be the last day I'll be around DEC; I've
accelerated my schedule for cleaning up my office, saying goodbyes,
etc. because I have a job interview at another company on Friday
afternoon. Turns out that the manager of tech writing there was a
supervisor at Wang when I was a writer there, so I'm somewhat of a
known quantity. I also spent the couple weeks before this week passing
along resumes to friends/relatives/enemies/inlaws/outlaws at other
companies, so I've got numerous irons in the fire. It does seem like
there are a fair number of writing jobs out there, so I'm optimistic
about my chances of finding something fairly soon.

To those of you who still remain, one bit of advice...if you find out
in the near future that your department is going to be hit, start
your contingency planning ASAP. Update your resume, talk to your
friends and colleagues at other companies about possible openings,
check the ads, etc.. DON'T wait until notification day before thinking
about starting this stuff -- the number of laid-off people I've seen
here who have been caught totally off guard is disturbing.

Send some good vibes in the direction of Rochester, NH at about 2:00
Friday afternoon. I'll probably check in here again sometime tomorrow
    afternoon.

Here in our location, the managers do NOT know who will be hit until
the Friday before. They know the ranking by performance and longevity,
but they'd don't know the number to be cut. So, everyone is told to be
in at 8:00 so that there isn't any waiting around for an individual.
The "interviews" are scheduled and any change disrupts all the others.

We lost a manager last week, which was kind of surprising, as the rumor
has it that managers and secretaries will be hit this coming Monday.

Lots of long faces around here, particularly among the "survivors",
who realize that it's probably just a matter of time, and that the
workload will be increasing between now and then.

Best of luck to all, particularly PY and Dickstah, both of whom I've

Yeah, work for another 4-5 months, while management explores the interior
of their rectal canal with their heads. Meantime the workload increases,
you're constantly looking over your shoulder, you're constantly being
re-orged.....

Or it could be like a fellow I know -- scramble to find another position
at a pay cut and on the graveyard shift. Do that because you love
the company, and you're loyal, then get axed again, but this time at
a much less lucrative package.

It ain't all roses.....

I've heard that it's a State Law in Mass that a company give 9 weeks of pay.

Well, we all know the score these days. I realize most people have
been with the company much longer than I, and I don't claim to have
the same perceptions of a person who has invested much of their life to
DEC. (I've been here 6 years)

Having said that, I think everyone, in each function should consider
the prospect of TFSO. IF they are getting a sense that they are "sacred
cows" or "untouchable" from management, I would forewarn them to take
that information with a grain of salt.

Everyone must make rational decisions regarding their career's and how
they plan to manage their own futures. Laying back, pretending not
to be in "danger" of being impacted, and not preparing for your own
career is something that people should do (IMO) even in good times.

In these times I am thoroughly surprised when people are impacted and
they are not ready for those consequences of TFSO. Granted, the bigger
the package, the longer you can regroup from a surprise termination.

With the diminishment of the package, our employees are going to be
challenged to be much better prepared in regards to termination.

Once you are prepared (i.e., have some contingency plans) you can deal
with the company in transition in a better, more positive manner.

Life after DEC is a fact, in many cases it doesn't have to be a
    negative experience.

To add to Chip:

ANyone without an up-to-date resume, and a grasp on what is needed out
there, is doing themselves a disservice. I know update my resume
monthly, and truth be known, look at job opportunities all the time.

And not to sound like doom, my wife is looking, and she knows a lot
of personal recruiters - they echo these sentiments:

* They get DOZENS of resumes from ex-Deccies and Deccies *EVERY* day

* They say too many have experience only with VAX/VMS or with products
that run on VAX/VMS platforms - and the job market is *SCARCE* for
those skills.

My 2 cents.

One of my all-time favorite skits. The other "player" was Christopher

played a former catcher.

Digital follows the MA layoff law in terms of a 9 week continuous
    pay period.

Digital then adds the severence package, based upon time of service.

I don't think they can manuver around that unless the law is changed.

The 9 weeks pay is not a package its law,a package is a lump sum
payoff, the 9 weeks pay are weekly checks compared to a package
which is all at once. Alls that means is if you get the tap you
can't collect from the state for weeks.

The 9 week law is the law in Mass. The reason Digital honors this in
all other states is because they are incorporated in Mass. and must
give 9 weeks to employees there and to be consistent provides the same
to all us employees. The package will never be less than 9 weeks...

I do not believe the 9 weeks is law in Mass. It IS law concerning
the WERN Act. This act concerns plant closing of which mine is one.
This act also says that you must give folks at least 60 days notice
before the plant closes. I know cause we had to sign the paperwork
that notifies us that our plant will be closing anytime after Jan. 8th.

As far as I know, there is no law requiring a company to pay an
employee 9 weeks of contined pay when layed off or involuntarily/
voluntarily seperated from a company. Millions of folks get layed off
and fired every day and I don't see their company shelling out an
    additional 9 weeks of pay.

I believe what DEC has done is taken the 9 weeks (60 days) for
plant closings (since it has closed a number of plants already) and
simply applied that to everyones severance package. So, they can pull
the 9 weeks if and when they want unless you are part of a plant
closing. But I doubt they will do this. I bet they simply reduce
the number of weeks per years service as they have been doing with
each new TFSO package. Next package will probably be 9 weeks + 1
week for every year of service. Just a guess though.
