    I got .0!

It seems to me that the NFL has done very well in recent years in
getting the two teams that have played the best in the regular season
into the league championship, especially compared to the NHL or MLB.

Commentary
Pro Files
It was 234 professional football games ago that the majority of those
who claim to know about such things were saying the Washington Redskins
and Buffalo Bills would be playing on Jan. 26, 1992 in the Hubert
Horatio Humphrey Metrodome.
	And here we are.
What a massive waste of time and money we have gone through just to
arrive at the obvious conclusion.
If we had to endure Sunday after Sunday of fumbles, interceptions and
beer commercials, the least we could have had was a result that would
have made it all meaningful.
Phoenix vs. Cleveland in the Super Bowl, for instance, would have
shown just how important all those games were that went into eliminating
the 26 teams that will not be present Sunday after next. Tampa Bay vs.
Seattle would have been just as good.
But, no. We've got Washington and Buffalo to deal with, which means
all those other games were just time killers.
If they had listened to the know-it-alls back in August, we could
have cleaned up this mess before the leaves turned. Instead, we must
spend the next two weeks going through the mandated exercise of trying
to figure out who is going to win the Super Bowl.
Well, the advice here is to get this over with in a hurry. So here it
is:
Washington is going to win the Super Bowl. And there are all sorts of
reasons why the Redskins will do so.
First of all, the game is being played indoors. The NFC has a 4-1
record in indoor Super Bowls. The only AFC team to win a Super Bowl
played under a roof was Oakland. The Raiders are not in this one. The
Raiders are not even in Oakland, for that matter.
The people who put a lot of stock in colors say Washington will win
the Super Bowl because the Redskins wear red. That means Washington's
aura will be putting out heat, a much needed element when one finds
oneself in Minneapolis in January. The cool blue of the Bills will
evaporate against the Redskins say the experts in this field.
Among those who like conspiracy theories, Washington is the runaway
favorite because it is the Capitol's team. The whispers in the back
halls say if the Bills do not flop in the upcoming game, every
government-backed project in the Buffalo area will be voted out of
existance. So there.
The numerologists also like the Redskins. It used to be that if a
quarterback wore No. 12 in the Super Bowl, he was a likely winner. Those
days are apparently over. Joe Montana, after all, wore something other
than No. 12 and so did Phil Simms and Jeff Hostetler. Buffalo's Jim
Kelly wears No. 12. But Washington's Mark Rypien has No. 11 on his
jersey.
All of those reasons sould quite logical to these ears, but so does
this one: Buffalo's defense rose up and swatted down the Kansas City
Chiefs two weeks ago and received a lot of accolades for it.
Kansas City, however, has the most one-dimensional offense in
professional football. Once the Chiefs ran into a wall on the ground,
they were helpless in the air.
Last Sunday, Buffalo almost shut out the Denver Broncos and more
folks jumped on the Bills' defensive bandwagon. But this effort came
against a team that had scored more than 20 points only four times
during the regular season.
Despite John Elway's heroics against the Houston Oilers, Denver was
not a very good offensive team this year and it showed against Buffalo.
Even Minnesota gained more yards than Denver did this season and the
Vikings weren't exactly Super Bowl material.
So it says here the Buffalo defense will crumble like an overbaked
cookie. The Bills put pressure on Elway, but Rypien has been protected
better than President Bush lately.
Art Monk and Gary Clark will have an enjoyable day catching close to
100 yards worth of passes each, Ricky Ervins will break a couple of long
runs in the second half and anytime the Redskins get within a cannon
shot of the goal line, Chip Lohmiller will be around to add three points
to the cause.
Washington led the NFL in points this season and has not slowed down
in the playoffs. In ideal playing conditions, at least for Buffalo, the
Bills could not manage an offensive touchdown against Denver. The
Broncos have a good defense, but it still isn't as good as the
Redskins'.
After all the discussion about the three-deep zones and the safety
blitzes and the middle screens, it comes down to points. And Washington
will be able to score more points than Buffalo. That was the consensus
in August, as you recall, and it hasn't changed.

Those fans coming here for the game had better bring their winky
warmers. The artic blast has re-emerged and we're at -12 this morning.
Gone are those mild days of 30 degrees that we were blessed with the
    last few weeks. :*(

It's kind of fun with all the activities planned downtown. We do have
one Redskins fan in the office and he does have tickets. Not only
that, but his daughter is in a danceline as part of the pregame or
    halftime show.

I'm not sure if I'll try to get in. If I do, I'm going to wait until
about 20 minutes before gametime and find a desperate scalper. I'll
offer about $15 and that's about it. Face value is $150/$200.

Interesting note on Washington's kicker Chip Lohmiller. He's a local
boy and was a walk-on at the U of Minnesota. He went on to have a very
good college career and was drafted in the second round by the
Redskins. I remember his first year when he was struggling there
and many of the fans wanted his head. Now he's the Pro Bowl kicker and
actually scored more points himself than the whole Indy Colts team this
year. It's a dream come true for him. What could top the season? Oh,
    probably a game winning FG...

Things I'd like to see during this year's Super Bowl (in no particular
     order):

     1) Boyz 2 Men doing the national anthem.

     2) Bruce Smith getting a sack and not celebrating.

     3) The announcers never once saying, "The whole season comes
down to this game" as if we didn't know.

     4) A close, hard fought game.

     5) No crowd shots of good looking babes with rich guys that aren't me.

     6) Scott Norwood kicking the field goal that sends it into overtime.

     7) A start time that allows me to see my all-time favorite movie
'On The Waterfront' on the big screen in Cambridge that same day.

     8) At least one long Thurman Thomas run for a touchdown.

     9) At least one great Art Monk catch for a touchdown.

    10) Someone getting the MVP who you never would have picked beforehand.

    11) Joe Gibbs getting really emotional on one side of the field and Marv
Levy falling asleep on the other.

    12) A Keystone beer commercial where someone takes a swig then spits it
out and says, "Gawd, this is awful !"

    13) No beachballs, wave or barechested morons.

    14) An 'Up With People' vs LA Crips gang fight as the half-time show.

I'd settle for an announcer with a brain

But I'd like a crowd shot of me with a barechested babe where I suck
down a keystone, spit it out on a guy wif a beachball, say "This is
awful", then plant one on the babe while the wave starts, and say
"It doesn't get any better than this...."

> 6) Scott Norwood kicking the field goal that sends it into overtime.

I'd like to see Norwood get a bigger helmet, or a Gonzo helmet like
Mark "How many more times can I get concussed" Kelso. Norwood's helmet
is too small cause it makes his eyes into slits and he cain't see the
posts....

The best example of this was the drive where Elway *did* lead the Broncos
into chip-shot field goal range (to the ten) and then on the next two
downs proceeded to fumble a snap pulling away from the center (the
inexperience of the center was of course cited as the problem but it
appeared as if the ball slipped out of Elway's hands well after the
transition) and then take a costly sack. The series resulted in a loss

Every year 'round the playoffs you could see him arrive,
He stood six foot four and weighed 205.
Kind of broad in the shoulders, narrow in the brain,
And everybody knew in the BIG one his skills would wane.

PICK JOHN, PICK BAD JOHN.

Old John would take his Broncos every year to the show,
But that's just as far as the Donkey's would go.
Super Bowl blowouts became the norm,
While ol' Mr. Ed would look tired an worn.

PICK JOHN, PICK BAD JOHN.

Well the Donkeys went north to play the Bills,
But old John started looking over the Hill.
Late in the game Buffalo started smokin',
And running true to form John started chokin'.

Nobody can say if John's leg was hit,
Some say John just up and quit.
But on the field as the players gathered round,
Someone said "under that pile is a quarterback who's a clown".

PICK JOHN, PICK BAD JOHN.

So we're ten days from the biggest sports day in America which kind
     of sets me to thinking...

There's been a lot of fuss about what a jerk Jack Kent Cooke is, but
quick who owns the Bills ? Just wondering.

The Twin Cities may not be in the middle of a cornfield but they ain't
     N'awlins either.

Then again they beat the hell out of Foxborough and Green Bay.

It's fine to be into sports but if you're sitting at home watching the
Super Bowl with a multi-colored afro wig on then you've got a serious
     problem.

Some of those Washington hogs fans look a little too at home in those
house dresses. They kind of remind me of that cross-dressing scene in
Woody Allen's "Evrything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex..."

Just as Michael Buffer should be the designated ring announcer for all
title bouts, John Madden and Pat Somerall should be the designated ann-
     ouncers for every Super Bowl.

If Scott Norwood blows the game winner this time I don't think his team-
mates will be quite as understanding as they were last year.

It's amazing how entertaining a Super Bowl can be without the Donks in
     it.

If as we're always told line play wins it then you have to go with the
     'Skins.

How glad do you think CBS is that they don't have Denver and Detroit play-
ing in Minnesota ? That woulda been a real ratings bonanza.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I've heard Gary Glitter's 'Hey
Rock N' Roll Part II' playing at some stadium during a televised sporting
     event.

Lobsters, steamers and Sam Smith's Nut Brown Ale. That's what I'll be
doing Super Bowl Sunday. It's tradition.

advantage indoors on the turf. I have to agree and pick the Bills
by 10. Thermal Thomas will have a big game, score 2 TD's and win
MVP honors. Washington really hasn't played a tough team in the
playoffs while the Bills got a severe reality check. Washington's
average score on grass is something like 34-13 while on turf it's

The Dome is the big advantage the Bills have. Indoor turf helps their
team speed. However, I still think the secondary of the Bills is a
weak spot - and the turf can only help Monk, Clark and Sanders. And
I'd love to see Lofton or Beebe one on one with Green deep.

The wild card in this game is Joe Gibbs. I'm sure he'll devise
    something.

My strategy would be to come out chucking the ball every down. The
Bills have to be gearing up to stop the clock. They'll have the memory
of getting the ball shoved down their throat in last year's super bowl,
and the film clips of the hogs leading a clock eating, turf tearing
    ground assault.

They'll be bunching up, and biting at fakes. Kelso and big mouth, er
Smith, will be cheating up. My ultimate first play from scrimmage
would be a flea flicker. Riggs up the middle, back to Rypien, hit
    someone deep.

Also, look for the Skins tight ends to have big days.

The other big edge, IMO, to the Skins is Chip Lohmiller over Norwood.
Norwood is a better kicker on turf than grass, but Lohmiller is a
    WEAPON.

I read in the paper today that ticket package sales are way, WAYYYYYYyyyy down
this year. Jose Cuervo is actually selling more ticket packages to Mexico where
you watch the game on a big screen set up on the beach than actual ticket
packages to Minny.

Supposedly Minnesotans are hoping for cold snowy weather so that they can show
off how hardy they are....the cold must have frozen your collective brains :-)

The article did have good things to say about the winter carnival however....

From my weather calendar for this week:

   -COLDEST

With an average temperature of 9 degrees, this week is 65 degrees
colder than the warmest. Prepare for an upward temperature climb for
    the next 26 weeks!

heh, heh, heh. Very funny. But as of now it looks like the visitors
may be lucky after all. It's in the 30's today and they're talking 40
tomorrow! I've heard 30's through Friday so far. Course things could
    change after that... ;*)

We've been told that ALL the hotel rooms are gone. Some people
(including corporate likes) are staying 80+ miles away. People with
tickets, but without rooms are coming. Some may just come for the game
and fly out again. Despite what you hear, there's not a ticket to be
found. I mean geez, they have only so few tickets to sell, most of it
goes to the non-fan corporate likes anyway.

One thing about Minnesotans, they are very protective of their area
and people. I think we can take a joke, I mean look at all the people
here who ice fish. :*) :*)

I haven't read the article yet in SI, but Rushin did a good job on the
World Series for them. He's a young writer, so I wouldn't say he knows
    everything about the state.

I'll have to let you know about some of the events I attend. It's
sounding like the Ice Palace will be the major attraction with 2M
people expected to see it during the 12 days of the St. Paul Winter

They've been crying up a storm about ticket distribution in
Washington DC. Apparently league policy dictates that at least 7,000
of the some 13,000-15,000 tickets given to each team this year be
distributed to season ticket holders. The sleazy Jack Kent Cooke says
that he's in compliance with this dictate but is refusing to state
exactly how many tickets were included in the lottery. The gist of the
justified complaints of the faithful Redskin customers is that he's
only kicking in about half the team allotment.

They didn't have the problem to this extent when the Patriots went to
the Super Bowl, right? Didn't just about everyone who was registered
as a season ticket holder get at least one ticket? Not saying that the
situations are at comparable, just curious...

The New Orleans Superdome was slightly bigger than the Metrodome so
each participating team had more tickets to distribute. Also, we had
far fewer season ticket holders that year than the Redskins do now.
Finally, we did offer each season ticket holder the chance to buy a
Super Bowl ticket on a one-for-one basis but they only had 1 day to
    show up and get them.

surprise, surprise, wouldn't expect any less from Cooke. When the
Giants got to the Super Bowl in 1986, almost all of the allocation went
to season ticket holders - of course they have 60,000 season ticket

Denny, I stand corrected on the tickets. I can easily see how we
could have had enough to give each season ticket holder a pair.

No I didn't go to the Super Bowl. I wouldn't have been part of the
travelling party (though if we ever make it again, I will offer to take
the week off from work and go down and work with the team if they'll
pay my expenses to do so). One of my colleagues on the crew went - was
able to come up with a ticket and chartered down. Another colleague
went down and gave a ticket taker a C note to get in. He got in.

One of the other guys, besides working, has season tickets. He offered
me the tickets at his cost and I turned him down, thinking I wouldn't
be able to afford the cost of the trip. That year, the tickets were
$75 each. He bought his tickets and by the time he got out of the lot,
sold them for $500 each. If I'd known that, I'd have bought the
tickets, sold one and had enough money to go. I've regretted it ever
    since.

I coulda sold mine for $500 each on the way out of the Foxboro
parking lot too. I went to the game instead. Should of took the dough
and watched the game in a Bourbon St. bar. I would nexted time. BTW,
tickets were being sold for a lot more than the $500 offered right
away. Your friend shoulda held onto his ticket for a while.

232.126FSOA::JHENDRYJohn Hendry, DTN 297-2623Tue Jan 21 1992 18:2519
Well, my friend is greedy and probably took the first offer he got. In
fact, even if he had promised me the tickets, he probably would have
given into the lure of the big money and I wouldn't have gotten them
anyway. The trip to Disneyworld for his family would have been more
    important.

The Super Bowl happened so suddenly that I didn't really have time to
make sure I was somehow included. I would have gladly done whatever
shit work the team needed if I could have been part of the travelling
party and gone, and would the next time too.

What I would really like to see is for there to be a rating system for
the stats crews (there is in the NBA) with members of the best crew
(say, 2) being chosen to work the game with whoever works it (or, even
for the Pro Bowl). My ultimate dreams in my part-time job are 1. To
get a free trip to Europe or Japan for a preseason game and 2. To work
    at the Super Bowl.

Actually, the folks from the Elias Sports Bureau (the league

members from the host team crew, but I'm not sure. Members of the

Ah yes. The SUPER BOWL! THIS WEEKEND!

It's time for my fearless predictions. Eventually.

The Super Bowl. The most important day of the year for millions. An
excuse for grown people to dress up like kids and scream and holler and
gnerally act like obnoxious geeks. The Super Bowl. The day that is the
showcase of America - the pinnacle of American culture. The Game is
broadcast to less nations and peoples all over the globe. American
Wannabe's - all of them. Yeah, they have thier own pet events - the
World Cup, the Last Guy Left Gets Eaten By The Lion contests,
butt-walnut-cracking, Hormonal Overload Swim Championships, not-NBA
material type guys tossing - but nothing like the Super Bowl. Even in
the greater 50 States, there isn't a championship like it. The other
sports have best of series, and basketball and hockey let anyteam
boasting 6 players who can count to 12 get into the playoffs. And
hockey usually involves teams from Moose Nut, Canada and has a bunch of
guys with french-sounding names. But I digress.

The Super Bowl. Predictions. Yep, that's what this note is about.
Predictions. SuperBowl XXmumble. The Buffalo Bills versus the
Washington Redskins. Politically correct types will be in a big quandry
(hit, a quandry is not a place where marble comes from..). The
Washington team debases native original inhabitants. The Buffalo team
conjures up the image of the men who drove the Washington team's
namesakes into the ground. There will be some sort of protest.
Somewhere about this.

This Super Bowl has the chance to be exciting. For many Super Bowls,
the most exciting part has been the coin flip. I predict Chuck Noll
will confer, via headset and headphones, with the coin flip coach before
doing the ceremonial toss. The Vegas Line of the winner of the coin
toss is rated a 'toss up'. Pretty funny - for Vegas.

Ah yes. The Super Bowl. Betting. More Betting. Even MORE BETTING!!!

You can bet on anything. Here are some examples:

First Player to mouth "Hi Mom" to the camera (some obscure 50-cent piece
defense back is the leading favorite...)

First time John Madden uses a Batman term (boink, zonk, etc...)

First use of the Etch-a-sketch thingy (Best Bet: Madden choreographing
the coin toss...)

First shot of the inside of the Metro Dome roof.

First shot of a Chestally-Advantaged Blonde (Female Division).

And so on....

Wait, the Super Bowl. FOOTBALL. AMERICAN FOOTBALL!

The pre-game show will be too long. As always. Scott Norwood missing
the winner last year will be featured. Human interest type stories
(Bruce Smith knitting comforters for out-of-work ex-Sooners, Don Warren
working for the given-name disadvantaged...)

The game itself? Well we'll see BLIMP SHOTS of the outside of the
stadium. And no one will know why. In fact, there will be NO BLIMP.
They will use a still photo of the twin-cities (which aren't identical,
FWIW, BTW.) In fact, they will use an old picture, cuz in the corner
you'll be able to see Len Krausse fair-catching Mary Tyler Moore's hat.

Oh yeah, another bet is guessing when the 'extended half-time' will be
mentioned, and how it can make the team's 'cold' and tight. Basically
the problem with the extended half-time show is that coaches can't think
of enough to say, and the players' attention span can't cope. They
should show some of them football follies in the locker room. Loosen
them up!

The game will feature endless shots and replays of every play.
Commericals will feature scantily clad females, beer, junk food, fast
cars, more females, healthy junk food, beer, incomprehensible perfume,
fashion and computer adds, male-squirming feminine hygeine stuff, beer,
and other things that make this game Great! And captivates the
audience.

Did I mention tailgating? We'll see some. The first large guy with a
stogie, a sausage, a beer and can say 'ahhh' will be featured. Unless
there are a bunch of guys in boxer shorts with their chests painted.
Then they go first.

The game. Oh yeah, THE GAME. We'll know that the Bills are successful
65% of the time on 2nd and 3 in dome games played on Sunday when its
colder outside than in and the defense is in a 3-4 red dog cross hair
alignment. Or something like that.

We'll hear a lot about hogs and how they shouldn't be on the carpet.
Sounds right to me. And we'll hear about guys younger than most of us
being 'grizzled, seasoned veterans' (sounds like a steak) or in the
'twilight of their careers'. Oh, and we'll all wonder where Scot
Norwood's eyes are. All Washington field goal attempts will be chip
shots.

The half time show will replay all the great plays from the first half.
And if their's an extra minute, highlights from the Vikings' Super Bowl
Glories. If there's an extra minute and 10 seconds, they'll include the
Broncos. 5 more seconds and you get the Eagles and Patriots thrown in.

The second half will either matter or it won't. And even if it does
matter, to many it won't matter cuz they ain't got no gray matter left
from all the fermented matter they been intaking.

Take the team logos. A Buffalo and an American Indian. If the game
ends up like most meetings between those two nobel characters, the
Dallas Cowboys will win the Super Bowl.

The Redskins have a posse. The Bills have a linebacker with two much
stuff in his hair. The Redskins have the Hogs. The Bills have a safety
named after a horse. Mind boggling, ain't it.

Oh yeah. Predictions. Wind will not be a factor. Dan Quayle will root
for the Canton Bulldogs, saying he respects people who live in the
tropics.

This will be a duel. brought to you by Canon. This will be a dog
fight. Brought to you by ALpo. It will be a chess match. Brought to
you by Ed's Pawn shop. It'll be everything and more. Or it will be
less exciting then last week's Matlock. Or more exciting than "Beat The
Clock" with Dean Smith.

The Super Bowl will be overproduced. Overhyped. Over-indulgent. Long.
Too commercial. Too corny. Drawn out. Over analyzed.

It'll be GREAT. I won't miss it. ANd neither will you. If you do, you

Well I really hope Buffalo wins just to shake things up but the Skins
appear to have to many answers on both sides of the ball. Plus the fact
that they can play ball control and keep it away from the Bills. Kelley's
thrown a lot of TDs and also alot of interceptions. Buffalo better score
first or it's going to be a long day. Too much hype about what a good one
it should be. I say Skins 34 Bills 16

Well, the big weekend is upon us. I drove by the Dome last night and
it had flashing lights all around it. Also they built all these
temporary Bud Bowl buildings across the street. After the Woofs game
we tried going in a few places, but they were so packed we didn't stay.
It appears there are more Buffalo fans here than Washington. At least
that's the jackets/hats that we saw. Didn't see any from Washington.
Came across a couple of former Viking players prior to the game at the
sports bar in the arena. Matt Blair and Jesse Soloman. There was
another player, but we didn't recognize him.

I'd like to check out an ESPN SportsCenter telecast if possible. Also,
there are bands/activities going on in skyways all weekend. The
Minneapolis Convention Center has an NFL Experience as well. This is
described as the first ever NFL "Theme park" with over 30 exhibits,
interactive games and NFL attractions. Of course there's the Ice Palace
and all the St. Paul Winter Carnival events too. I figure if I can't get
my price, gametime would be the best chance to check out the Palace.

They're having a celebrity roast of Ahmad Rashad tomorrow (hosted by
Bill Murray) and Super Bowl Saturday night (hosted by Burt Reynolds
and televised by TNT) Both are $50. They had a Super Bowl breakfast

person you could go to the NFL Alumni dinner tonight.

Congratulations Washington and their fans! Washington was by far the
better team and deserved to win. Buffalo was bushwhacked by the Ref's. IMO it
was a very poorly officiated game. In the first half alone I can remember 3
clearly incorrect calls that went against Buffalo but even with that the Bills
were not as good as the Redskins were this year.

It's too bad the game wasn't closer as it would have been more
exciting like last years was. The refereeing job also spoiled the game somewhat
for me. It's too bad some of the calls against Buffalo were so blatantly called
incorrectly. Oh well that's the way it goes. Washington executed on Offense and
Defense more efficiently than the Bills did and that is what won the game for
them. It is going to be a real tough thing for Buffalo to deal with now. The
Vikings and the Broncos were the only teams up until Sunday that had lost back
to back Superbowls. Now Buffalo has thrown it's hat into the ring and it may
snowball on them just the way it has for the other two teams. Someday one of
these teams will break that but right now Buffalo must feel like a jinxed
team forever locked into a horse race destined to finish in a place position.

Here are a few feelings I had during the just about 4 hour yawning
period:

The Officiating was terrible. One of the worst all time jobs I have seen done
in the Superbowl.

I expected better things from Buffalo. They were very mediocre and
disappointing.

Buffalo had too many turnovers. Kelly screwed up too many times. He was
panicing out there.

Best player : Rypien, made the plays that Kelly couldn't.
Best play : The 1st onside kick by Buffalo, It was played perfectly...one
of the few times Buffalo executed well all day.
Best Drive : Middle of the 3rd Quarter by Washington, Buffalo was trying to
make a come back and that drive essentially put the game
                    away for good.
Best Team : Need we say more! Washington dominated both sides of the ball.
                    Definitely the superior team!
Best screw up: Officials! The no interference call when Andre Reed was hit in
the head before the ball got there. That's one of the worst
I've ever seen in a Superbowl game!

And finally.....Best COMMERCIAL! Couldn't let this one go!:

Nike and their "Hare Jordan"!! Too funny. I was laughing for
awhile after that one. It was more entertaining than the
                     game.

was as I had expected but wasn't rooting for - Washington won big. A
couple of times it looked like Buffalo might pull out the miracle,
    but....

I wish we had seen more of the downfield coverage. Kelly just wasn't
with it - looked like the Kelly who played against the Pats (and lost)
rather than the dominating guy who has played against other teams.

Completely in the spirit of their whining behavior all week long, I
thought there was too much griping about the officiating on the part of
the Bills and they totally lost composure (and sure as heck didn't
regain it when they came out after halftime-- bang, first play,
interception to the two-yard line). The Redskin DBs were anticipating
the plays and belting the Bills' wideouts around, and in a few
instances arrived maybe a split second early, but mostly it looked like
aggressive defense to me. Even the play where Reed threw his helmet the
defender had a clear shot at the ball, a better shot than Reed, leaped
over him (and yes, took Reed out with his lower body in the process) and
had both hands on the ball. If an offensive player does that in going
for a ball thrown into heavy coverage; it's never called. I'm glad the
officials let stuff like that go (and they made some of it up to the
Bills anyway on a pretty lame interference call on James Lofton where
Lofton had given up on yet another lousy Jim Kelly pass, came back to
break the play up, had the ball hit him in the side yet still drew the
    call).

I'll give the officials credit for another thing, too. Except for that
opening kickoff screw-up, with instant replay they made their decisions
quickly and got the ball back in play. Maybe they realized that it
might be their last shot with the thing.

Jim Kelly, even in spite of the rush that was put on him, looked
terrible. The first long interception by Green was a ball put
completely up for grabs, the interception by Gouveia was another
(although Kelly was pressured heavily on that play), and in the play
I mentioned above James Lofton was ten yards in the clear with open
field to the end zone and Kelly still couldn't hit him on a medium
range throw. Come to think of it, after a brilliant regular season,
Kelly didn't play well at all in any of the three playoff games.
    What happened?

I wanted the Bills to win, but most of that emotion was taken away

a gesture like that when you're a Lions fan.

Buffalo just got their head handed to them. Could have been a lot
worse, and also makes me think of the Lions as a team who lost
to the best team in the league in the championship game, rather
than a team who looked bad in it.

You hardly knew they were playing in this game by listening to the stories all
week. The Bills almost acted like they hadn't done this before with acts like
Thomas' stupid strut onto the field during player introductions. Maybe this
will transform them back into the 'Bickering Bills'.

This was a good non-call IMO. Someone should tell Reed there's a rule known as
'going for the ball.' But the funniest part of this play was when Marshall (or
whoever the Washington defensive player was) got the attention of the official
and pointed out that cry-boy Reed just threw his helmet. "Hey ref, check this

If you're talking about the one that gave the Bills first-and-goal in the 3rd
quarter I agree. The defender turned around in time to go for a ball that
was terribly underthrown. But with that play eventually making it 24-10, the
Bills were definitely back in it with a defensive stop. But the Redskins came
through with a championship drive that all-but iced it. That Rypien pass to
Clark was a thing of beauty.

The replay reversal that took away Washington's TD in the first quarter was a
bad call. Couldn't those idiots in the booth see that Monk was pushed after
his first foot was down???

The Redskins are so much better than Luckalo that they only came away with 3
points on 3 possessions inside the Bill 20 but still won handily.

The Bills are a bunch of arrogant crybabies, and (needless to say) I'm
very happy that the Redskins put them in their place.

Congrats Skins! It's good to see the trophy go to a group of classy
professionals (and there was only ONE group of classy professionals on the
field yesterday).

I don't think the game was, as a whole, badly officiated. The one
missed call was the pass interference, in my opinion. I also think the
NFL would be a lot better off with 15 Jerry Markbreits refereeing.
He's clear, concise and in control. Whoever was the replay official
was very fast yesterday and that's the way it should be. I believe
Markbreit is head and shoulders above the rest of the referees in the
NFL now that Jim Tunney and Jerry Seeman have retired.

I was rooting for the Bills yesterday - not because I especially like
the Bills, but because they're an old AFL team and because the other
person who I know best on another team (other than Jon Berger of the
Giants) is Denny Lynch, PR Director of the Bills. He was with the
Patriots when I first started, he's been a friend over the years and I
felt really bad for him when Thurman Thomas started playing his games
earlier in the week. A lot of what I thought for the Bills went away
when he started doing that, his struttin during the intros and then
    Andre Reed spiking his helmet.

It wouldn't have mattered what offense the Bills used yesterday, I have
the feeling the Redskins would have stuffed it. Buffalo was weak on
defense all year and it showed yesterday.

I gained an awful lot of admiration for the way Jim Kelly hung in there
    yesterday.

On Those Reebok ads. I figure that most folks don't know who Dan
O'brien or Dave Johnson are - and that Reebok is advertising Barcelona
as a showdown between the two.

O'Brien was ranked #1 in the world in the decathlon this year,
recording the top-ranking score(8844 point, wind-aided) and won the
wWorld Champioships. Dave Johson is #2 in the US - but was ranked #8
in the world. Mike Smith of Canada was #2, Christian Schenk of Germany
#3, and Christian Plaziat (france), Robert Zmelik (Czech), Petri
Keskitalo (Finaland) and Mikhail Medved (Dan'l' Brother from AIC).

Johnson could do it - but Reebok is no doubt banking on an uniformed
public to buy the O'Brien vs. Johnson crap.

>The replay reversal that took away Washington's TD in the first quarter was a
>bad call. Couldn't those idiots in the booth see that Monk was pushed after
>his first foot was down???

I thought the rule was that you can only be pushed out of bounds and still get
the reception if BOTH feet have not touched. That is to say, once one foot
touches the ground the other has to get down no matter what. If he was pushed
after his first foot hit then it doesn't matter, he's out of bounds. Is this
right?

But, I still have a problem with the call. The replay showed his heel came
down in the end zone. At that moment, it's a TD. I mean, guys drags their
toes all the time, i.e. the toe hits and the rest of the foot is O.B. but still
is rules a reception. But if the heel comes down in bounds first, then the toe
hits out of bounds, the play is rules out of bounds. Perhaps this is
splitting hairs, but it doesn't seem consistant. If Monk had smaller feet, then
it would have been a TD 8^)

Regarding the touchdown reversal by Art Monk:

    It was the correct call.

Yes he was pushed, but the rule states if BOTH feet are in the air and
the player (in the opinion of the official) would have come down
in-bounds it is a catch. However if one foot is on the ground the
receiver can be pushed out. Supposedly the receiver has some
control at this point. Monk's foot clearly touched down and then was
    pushed out.

Except for the non-call on interference it was a well officiated game.
In addition if the call were made and Buffal had scored a TD Bills

Also liked the Bud ad with the running Clydesdales. Love to watch those

Did anyone else git the feeling that Kelly was gaggin' out there, and

BTW, the non-call agin Reed was horrible, IMO. Definite pass

A Great effort by the Skins, they played above the league all year,
and showed an extream amount of class Before, During and After the
game. Joe Gibbs has to rank, as one of the all time great coaches. He
was very classy when Lesley Vissor tried to bait him about his

The Bills didn't deserve any such victory. The game was not as close
as the score indicated. The Bills were at a total loss over how to
handle the Redskin defensive pressure. Kelly winged up several
desparation passes that deserved to be intercepted and they were.
Thurman Thomas wasn't even in the game and dropped one pass because he

This may have been Buffalo's swan song. ALl that talent. Relatively
easy division. They've been playing on top for about 5 season now,

The NFC east has won 4 of the last 6 super bowls. Easily the best
division in football. Compare it to the AFC East. OR Central. Only
the West comes even a little close.

I also love all the crying and whining about officiating. The

After a few years of coaching high school ball he decided to try

The Patriots and the Redskins gave him offers. So with a car with 125k

He was given a good thing by Bobby Bethard and he done very well in

I think you'll see the NFC continue to dominate the AFC for at least

Buffalo is the class of the AFC. In fact they haven't really had much
competition in the past 2 years. Their defense is overrated because of
who they play against. I don't see any up and coming teams in the AFC.

diego and possibly the Jets. Buffalo will probably become the bickering
bills again, Houston is getting old and KC never seems to be able to
reach the next plateau (plus they need a QB). The Raiders will take at
least 2 years to get Marinovich ready. Miami is always decent but never
    great.

The NFC has several teams that are up and coming to take the place of
the teams on a doward spiral, The Cowboys and Lions are legit, The
Eagles will be back, the Falcons and Saints are both solid teams. The
49ers still have a few years left. The Giants are on a downward spiral
but still decent. The Bears have been slowly spiraling downward for a
    few years.

I think the nFC will continue to widen it's gap over the AFC for at
    least 5 more years.

There's something I forgot to bring up earlier and no one else has
brought up: Why was the crowd so pro-Buffalo? This made no sense to
me. Here's an NFC town, and you'd think they'd want more company with
Denver and their Vikings as teams who have lost 2 straight big ones.

Okay, so most of the crowd is from out of town. I would think the
Redskins are up there as a team with one of the best national
followings right below the group of Dallas, Raiders, and 49ers. Plus,
the Redskin fans have been all but proven to be the league's best.

    I just don't get it.

re: non-playoff teams Eagles and 49ers were playing better at the end
of the season than just about anybody else. If anyone was going to beat
the 'Skins it would have been one of those teams. SF with a healthy
Montana next year could be devastating.

AFC: Denver could be in again next year. But they will need home field
advantage. But they play Seattle, KC, Raiders while Buffalo plays in an
easier division that could be real tough to do.

developed any sort of rivalry with the Jets which is kind of surprising

Well, I know that it is very, very difficult to get a Giants ticket
in the Meadowlands, which is why I like to see them play in Foxboro.

My brother once tried to get Giants-Raiders tickets, and it was over
$120 per, from a ticket service! The seats weren't that great either.

I don't know if it is the same with the Jets, but if it is that might
account for not many NE fans going there.

I think (and this is a blatant guess) that there are many more Giants
fans in THIS area (CT, Western Mass) than Jets fans, and that perhaps
the Jets fans are farther south and don't want to make the trip to
Foxboro.....

Just a guess, though,

Personally, I think there were two reasons why the Skins won.

First, they dominated the line of scrimmage. The Hogs are certainly
impressive, and when your offensive line is doing the job like they
were, it's easy to win.

Second, Buffalo could not handle the blitz. Couple that with Kelly
having a horrid day, and you get a big Washington win....

Offensive Lineman are my FAVORITE guys. I just wished that Madden
had chosen some Guards, instead of all those tackles....

Jets tickets are just as hard to get as Giants tickets as they're both
virtually sold out on a season ticket basis.

Prior to the Jets moving from Shea to Jersey, the basis of their fandom
was always Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island. The Giants had Manhattan,
Westchester County, Connecticut and New Jersey (or so it seemed to me).
Now, it seems like the Jets are virtually orphans in their own home.
All their games are essentially road games and it's certainly a long
trek from their base at Hofstra (Hempstead, on Long Island) to Giants
Stadium (where even there they have sort of second class
    accomodations).

    John -

And when the Jets were in Shea, tickets were pretty easy to come by.
My brother-in-law was a Jets fan - so we'd go to the Jints games using
my Dad's season tickets, and then the next week head down to Shea and
    buy tickets.

Shea was an absolute zoo. THe 'security' guards did nothing to stop
folks bringin in containers. One game, these guys brought in a case of
beer (cans) and just drank them and stacked them up in the aisle behind
them. The security did nothing. We usually bought tickets way up
high in the end zone, and they walked down to the end of field level
and stood there and watched the games.

It was always an interest contrast to see the two stadiums
(Meadowlands and Shea) and the fans that attended. The Jets had a much
younger average age to the fans. The Giants fans were older, and more
of a family - since many had had season tickets for years and years.

I've never been to a Giants game in Giants Stadium. I do expect to go
to one nexted August, but that's a working trip and not a fan trip.

It's been a long time since I've sat in the stands at a Patriots game
at Foxboro (1977 to be exact), but I've seen what the crowds are like.
I would put the Jets crowd as a young crowd now but surprisingly, not
as rowdy as the Foxboro crowd. Given the "bad reputation" of New York
fans, it may surprise some people. Oh, there's the high-octane
tailgating, the guys with their shirts off in December, the incessant
spelling of J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets and so on, but it's pretty mellow.
I felt perfectly safe cheering for the Patriots (unlike cheering for
the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium) and I've never seen a fight in the 4
games I've been to at the Meadowlands.

I would like to go to the game against the Giants in New Jersey in 1993
if we play each other down there during the regular season.

Well, lemme tale ya about what *I* saw in my ONE Jets game at the
Meadowlands (I saw the Giants there a few times and their crowd is
    cool):

    * Two black adolescents beaten badly by 4 white guys.

    * The four white guys beaten to a hospital-ready bloody-state by
two white weightlifter types as the crowd cheered and tossed beer
      on them.

    * Two guys fighting in the upper deck and finally given the beach ball
treatment as they rolled down, fighting, towards the deck's front and
the 75 foot drop beyond with the crowd cheering for a big fall and
groaning in disappointment as the plexiglass stopped them.

    * About 20-30 fights overall.

    * Myself doused with beer on the foot ramp during halftime by some kids
one level up (couldn't chase them cuz a brawl upramp from us left no
way through without risking entering the fray.

    * Wardle instructing me to NOT wear any Orange & Blue (it was a Broncos
game) and, when I showed up with my only stocking cap, a Broncos cap,
forcing me to buy an overpriced $20 Giants cap and to keep the Broncos
cap in my pocket where it wouldn't be seen. He was totally serious,
he didn't want to become involved in a fight.

    * Wardle instructing me in total seriousness to keep quiet and not cheer
for the Broncos. When John (Big Bad John) pulled one a his patented
spectacular plays I lost it and pumped my fist and cheered. Wardle,
I and a few buddies spent the next five minutes dealing with some
guys two rows up who were threatening to "kick your (i.e., my) ass."
We invited them to come on down and have at it, they didn't.

    * My car smeared with picnic food stolen from a nearby car missing a
driver's side window, and dozens of vandalized cars.

I always thought an official had to see the penalty to call it. From
what I saw on Sunday, Wilbur Marshall called the penalty, not the bozo

re: overall level of officiating in this game

The Bills never got a chance to get into a flow either offensively or
defensively. The Washington DBs were all over the receivers before the
ball got there (I counted 5 uncalled pass interferences in the first
half, after which I turned it off). The Washington OL "held" off the
Bills DL during the duration of the game I watched. Washington was
obviously the superior team, but the striped shirts could have made it
a better game by calling it staight up. In some ways, I'm not so sure
Levy's comment at halftime wasn't right.

    re: Overall Washington

I would be amazed if they are as good next season. Rypien had a
terrific year, but will still look like a stiff if he is pressured.
Next season, I would think the NFL will be better prepared for the type
of holding that the Washington OL does and they will spend alot of time
walking backwards. At least I hope they will. To allow one team to get
away with that stuff really gives them an unfair advantage and is
    dragging down the game.

On the ESPN Week-in-Review they showed a replay of the Reed helmet
incident. The Official was within about two yards of Reed and when the
helmet came to the ground he could see it. Plus I would suspect that
Reed also had words to say.

ESPN also mentioned and one could see Marv Levy saying to an Official
    "You have been bought!"

The official didn't see it and, as a result, shouldn't have called it.
If you didn't see it happen, it didn't exist. The point of all of this,
which seems to be lost on _some_ people, is the way that official could
boot the pass interfernce call so badly, which happened right in front
of him, and "see" the unsportsmanlike conduct, which happened behind
his back. Maybe he's like my mother, and has eyes in the back of his
    head. ;*)

If you re-read my reply one official was right there within a yard or
two. The CBS camera was focused on the other official.

The ref was within a couple of yards of the incident. If he didn't
see it he must have heard it and Reed's tirade, there's no way someone
that close wouldn't have put the noise the helmet hitting the ground
made, a rolling helmet and Reed's tirade together and just take if
as the word of the Skins...

Exactly. There's no way the official could have *not* seen that Reed
threw the helmet, even if he didn't catch him in the throwing motion.
This whole string is ridiculous. The Bills was whupped, and the
officials had nothing to do with it...

I think the NFL is losing it bigtime.

It was like Catholic school lasted night in the Pro Bowl.

They had a replay to see if there was a Pro Bowls rules violation,
and then there was a warning.

What next?

You mean the refs were cracking their knuckles with yardsticks
    instead of assessing penalties?

Did the girl fans have to sit on the opposite side of the field

Like I said... Seems to me that the Superbowl is fixed. I really
don't believe that Marv's comment is to far from the truth. I was

the Raiders don't win every game Hoot calls the fix anyhow !!

Yes, I can. Regular season ends Christmas weekend. First round of
playoffs is Jan 2-3. 2nd round of playoffs is Jan 9-10. Conference
championship games are January 17, the week off is January 24, the
Super Bowl is January 31 and the Pro Bowl (for those who care) is
    February 7.

Note that the off-week would not have existed had the NFL gone forward
with its plan to spread the 16 games over 18 weeks. That plan was
bagged due to the TV networks losing money. If there'd been the 16
games in 18 weeks, then the regular season would have ended the weekend
of January 2-3, 1st round of playoffs Jan 9-10, 2nd round Jan 16-17 and
Conference championship games January 24, with the Super Bowl still
    being January 31.

All this talk about the Super Bowl reminds me of the funniest
	moment in sports IMHO:

It was during the introductions to the 1979 Super Bowl. (I'm not
certain of the year, but it was the last one the Steelers won)
Each player ran in front of the camera and intoduced himself. Going
down the line they came to the intimidating Jack Lambert.

Lambert with a toothless sneer says, "My name's Jack Lambert. Middle
linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers from Buzzard's Breath, Wyoming."

The camera, obviously a hand held model, starts shacking. The
cameraman was laughing along with everyone else who is watching this.

Lambert intensifies his sneer and says, "What's so funny? That's
	where I'm from."

Instantly the camera is rock steady.

Time for the cameraman to change his shorts. I was still rolling
on the floor laughing when they kicked off.
