235.0. "And now a message from your Moderators." by CAMONE::WAY (Nude up and Note) Fri Jan 17 1992 15:42

There once was an old SPORTS moderator who lived in a shoe,
He had so many unruly SPORTS noters, he didn't know what to do.

Okay, that's a little Mother Goose from a tired Moderator,
who is acting as a spokesman for all the other tired Moderators.
I used Mother Goose, because I thought it might reach those
noters in here who insist on acting totally juvenile all of the time.
But at this point, I'm assuming that any SPORTS noter is an adult,
who knows how to act like one.

First off, being a moderator in this file, or any file is not an
easy job. You have a responsbility to uphold P&P concerning notesfiles
and net communication here at Digital. You have a responsibility to
ensure that the conference runs smoothly. You have a responsibility to
make sure that offensive material is kept out of the file.

Reading, or even skimming every note, is an awsome task. It is time
consuming, so that in many cases the Moderators are combining it with
their own jobs, and may in some cases, end up spending extra time to do it.

The word RESPONSIBILITY is indeed the correct word. The Corporation
holds moderators personally responsible for the content of the files
they moderate. If I were to post the pages from P&P which cover
the rules that should be followed in notes, then surely it could be
seen that the Moderators of SPORTS take some liberties and some chances
at times. Digressions, jokes, slightly ribald banter all fall
under this category.

The reason we do that is the unique character of SPORTS. But in
granting that leeway, was are assuming even more responsibility, and
indeed are passing some of it onto the Noters themselves, in our
assumption that the noters will act like adults.

The moderators of SPORTS do not have personal vendettas over which
feuds they want to expunge. We do not have certain noters we single
out for preferential treatment.

Contrary to popular belief the Moderators are NOT fascists who rule
arbitrarily with an iron hand. If anyone truly feels that way,
I can provide a list of conferences where the moderation is EXTREMELY
strict and the rules are followed to the letter.

Because we allow some leeway, on occasion we have to act quickly and
at times forcefuly to remove/hide or deal with something which crosses
the line. It may appear that this is arbitrary, but it is not.

When incidents like that occur, we would appreciate adult cooperation,
and recognition that the Moderators are not acting from personal bias,
but rather to try and keep the conference in line with the rules and
in line with the spirit of SPORTS. What we don't need is what amounts
to juvenile squabbling with us, like little kids telling their
parents "he hit me first", or "but I didn't think I was being bad".

The alternative to that is that the conference becomes moderated
like some others out on the net. If that were the case, I think that
the distinctive flair and flavor of SPORTS, which we all so dearly
love, would be lost.

The choice is yours, the Noters, really. We Moderators are willing
to put in the time and effort to give you the conference that everyone
enjoys, but we need your cooperation also. We cannot do it alone.

Thanks for listening, and I hope that we in the future can continue
to work together to keep SPORTS not just a SPORTS Tavern, but a
SPORTS *Family* Tavern.

Thank you,
frank

Well, there are two other alternatives.

First, I just shut down the file.

Second, the moderators start moderating according to the exact letter
of the law. I have a feeling SPORTS wouldn't be SPORTS if that's the
case.

All we're looking for is a tiny bit of cooperation. If we say not to
do something, then just be cooperative enough to understand that it has
crossed a line, and deal with it. We allow so much leeway that we
don't have any more leeway to give when the line gets crossed.

Thanks for understanding.....

    'Saw,

Perhaps moderation to the letter of the law is necessary. While
    everyone has their own interpretation of "where the line is drawn";
there is only ONE interpretation of the P&P's for moderation purposes.

We definitely have been thinking of that. It would not be the same
old SPORTS, and perhaps then folks would realize what they had was something
special, not something to piss and moan and whine about.

Time will tell,

Well, I guess all that we are asking is this:

Since we DO allow a lot of leeway, when we DO say to stop
something, please just comply. Don't give us a lot of
hooey, don't send us a ton of mail, and don't whine like
a little kid whose Mommy wouldn't let him (or her) have a toy.

I personally don't want to spoil the "ambiance" of SPORTS, but I'd like
to think that everyone in the "tavern" is an adult....

So, let's see how it goes....

'Saw

To follow up on 'Saw's request not to act like "a little kid whose
Mommy wouldn't let him (or her) have a toy". Please remember that the
most effective discipline when children are squabbling over a
particular toy is to remove the toy from *both* kids and send them
somewhere else to play. :-) No attempt to determine who did what to
whom first, last, or in between. Just a fairly effective method of
getting the non-desired behavior to stop. Often that is what our mods
are trying to accomplish. At least at my house, cooperation with the
discipline resulted in *much* quicker return of the toy to the play
    space.

It's a shame that our tavern seems to need the bouncers so often these
    days. :-(
