More than likely at noon, if the information given to me is accurate.
It's going to be a busy day in Amherst since the lacrosse team is
hosting Syracuse in the stadium as well and a crowd of 12000-14000 is
expected. Access to the baseball field is now difficult since the road
access has been cut off due to the construction of the new arena.

Most of the standings aren't in the paper this week, but based on what happened
this weekend, I can tell you this:

Atlantic 10 - Rutgers swept Massachusetts to win the Atlantic 10 East. If the
standings I had before were accurate, UMass finished second. The Atlantic 10
tournament opens this weekend with Rutgers playing the second place team in the
West and UMass playing the first place team in the West. Teams in contention
from the West are George Washington, Penn State and West Virginia.

Big East - I believe St Johns won the regular season title. Their playoffs
start next weekend and the teams in contention should be St Johns, Villanova,
Boston College and Providence.

EIBL - Army swept Brown over the weekend and that gives them a 12-5 league
record with a game to make up with Columbia. Dartmouth got eliminated losing
4 games to Cornell and Princeton. Harvard has at least 5 losses. The only
other team with a shot is Princeton which is at least 10-4. The only remaining
games for Princeton and Harvard that I can see are Princeton vs Cornell this
weekend and Harvard at Dartmouth.

North Atlantic - This league has finished play with the following final stand-
ings:

Maine 14-1	37-14
Northeastern	12-3	27-11
Vermont 6-8	18-14
UNH 5-9	13-20
Hartford 5-10	13-22
Boston Univ. 2-13	14-38

The ECAC playoffs open on Wednesday, May 15 in Orono, Maine with the following
teams:

1.	Maine
2.	Fordham
3.	Northeastern
4.	LeMoyne
5.	Holy Cross
6.	Fairfield
7.	CW Post
8.	Monmouth or St Mary's

I was wrong about the Big East. St Johns is in first at 18-2 and has
won the regular season title. Villanova and Providence are both 12-8,
Seton Hall is 10-8, BC is 11-9, UConn is 8-12, Pitt is 4-15 and
Georgetown is 4-17. Georgetown is the only team that has played a full
    schedule.

Columbia upset Army, 4-3, last week, so the Cadets finish at 12-6.
Princeton and Army split during the regular season, so a tie would
	have to be played-off.

Towson State defeated Rider on Sunday to win the ECC tournament and
an NCAA tournament bid. FIU and Stetson met this past Saturday for
the TAAC tournament title, but I don't know who won. I assume that
Stetson probably won (they needed 1 win, FIU two, and Stetson was at
	home in DeLand).

I know Harvard and Princeton each have at least 5 losses so they're
the only other ones still in contention. Princeton swept Dartmouth
last weekend, Harvard split with Cornell, do you have any idea how
Harvard and Princeton did? The EIBL generally has its playoffs at
neutral sites, so if it's between Princeton and Army, the game would
    likely be at Columbia.

Rutgers will be the Atlantic 10's representative to the NCAA
tournament. UMass beat Penn State 4-3 in the opener and then beat
Rutgers on Saturday to be the unbeaten team heading into Sunday's
action. Rutgers swept on Sunday, 5-4 in 10 innings and 8-3 to advance.
Grrr. The women's softball team, however, swept unbeaten through the
A-10 tournament so some salvation was gained.

Boston College beat out Seton Hall for the 4th spot in the Big East
tournament. The first round pairings are Boston College vs St Johns
and Providence vs Villanova. This tournament begins on Tuesday.

In EIBL action, Dartmouth swept Harvard so that should eliminate the
Crimson. The only question now is whether Princeton tied Army or if
    Army won outright.

Didn't Harvard and Princeton split last weekend ? If so, that would
leave Princeton at 11-5 with 2 remaining against Cornell, while Army
Army ended 12-6 in the conference.

Rutgers sweep of Massachusetts makes them the third of 5 teams
who have clinched NCAA tournament spots to have swept a double-
header against a team unbeaten in the tournament. Last weekend,
Florida International swept a double-header from Stetson on the
Hatters' field in DeLand, Florida, to win the TAAC title, while
Southwestern Louisiana swept a double-header yesterday from
Central Florida at home yesterday in Lafayette to win the American
	South title.

Teams in NCAA's by winning conference tournaments:
Florida International Golden Panthers (Trans America)
	Furman Palladins (Southern)
	Rutgers Scarlet Knights (Atlantic Ten)
Southwestern Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (American South)
	Towson State Tigers (East Coast)

Clemson is still unbeaten in the ACC tournament after defeating
Wake Forest yesterday. In the other winners' bracket game,
Georgia Tech and Virginia were postponed by rain. That game is
being played at this very hour.

I have no idea how Harvard and Princeton did last weekend, which is why
I asked a few notes back. If Harvard and Princeton did indeed split,
then Princeton could indeed win the league outright with a sweep of
    Cornell.

The NCAA announced the division I regional sites yesterday, with
each host school receiving an automatic bid (regardless of whether
they win their respective conference tournaments or not). The sites
and host schools are:

Northeast -	Mahaney Diamond, Orono, Maine (Maine)
East - Perry Field, Gainesville, Florida (Florida)
Atlantic -	Dick Howser Stadium, Tallahassee, Florida (Florida State)
South - Alex Box Stadium, Baton Rouge, Louisiana (Louisiana State)
Midwest -	Eck Stadium, Wichita, Kansas (Wichita State)
Central -	Disch-Falk Field, Austin, Texas (Texas)
West I - Rod Dedeaux Field, Los Angeles, California (Southern California)
West II -	Beiden Field, Fresno, California (Fresno State)

In the ACC Tournament yesterday in Greenville, South Carolina,
Georgia Tech defeated Virginia, 9-3, in a game made up due to rain on Sunday.
North Carolina State eliminated Wake Forest, 9-4, in 10 innings.
Virginia eliminated North Carolina, 5-1.
Clemson remained unbeaten in the tournament by downing Georgia Tech, 6-5.

Today:
Georgia Tech 38-21 vs North Carolina State 43-17
Clemson 51-8 vs Virginia 28-26-2

If Clemson wins, they will meet the GT-NCSU winner in the nightcap.
If Virginia wins, then Clemson, Virginia, and the Tech-State winner will all
be 3-1 in the tournament. The coaches of the three teams would draw straws,
with the coach having the odd straw getting his team a bye into the championship
game tomorrow, with the other two teams in the third game tonight.

Interesting decision for the NCAA today regarding ASU. ASU has played,
with little doubt, the toughest schedule in NCAA history, this year.
Almost half of their games were against teams currently ranked #13 or
higher. They had some injury problems early this year, but the
pitching and hitting came back late this season (I think vthey have a
8-10 game winning streak). Few people will deny that they are one of
the best 48 teams in the country, but will the NCAA pick a team that
ended up 5th in the 6PAC? I guess we'll know today.

Texas swept Texas Tech in Lubbock this past week (Thursday-Saturday)
while A&M lost once vs Houston, giving Texas the SWC title. The
Longhorns become the first team to clinch an NCAA tournament berth.

Georgia Southern and Western Carolina meet for the Southern Conference
tournament title today, I believe. They have split their two meetings
so far in the tournament, with WCU winning 17-10 on Saturday, and
GSU winning 14-12 on Sunday. The winner goes to the NCAA's as well.

Massachusetts and Rutgers split this weekend so they have won the
playoff slots in the Atlantic-10 East.

Yale I think has clinched the EIBL title after splitting with Harvard
and sweeping Dartmouth. They are 14-4 and are done with their season.
Harvard was 5-3 after Saturday and had a doubleheader at Columbia
    yesterday with no results available.

    Wow!

Did I read where Maine suspended something like 11 players due to
gambling? Is this the primary cause of their sudden demise?

Maine has been having a poor season all year, even before the gambling
news broke. They had a dreadful spring trip and then they didn't kick
butt up north like they usually do.

For those who don't know, several Maine athletes, mostly from the
football and baseball teams, have been named in accusations about
running or participating in a gambling ring at the school. UMaine
suspended them pending the outcome of the investigation.

No standings updates were printed today. I would imagine this is the
last weekend of the regular season coming up in most cases. The ECAC
Division 1 tournament is being held on the 15th-17th in Worcester, at
both WPI and Holy Cross. The ECAC Division 2 and 3 tournaments are
being held this weekend in New Haven and Hartford respectively. The
Atlantic-10 tournament is this weekend in Boyerstown, Penn. I don't
know when the Big East tournament is.

    Sigh,
We've been laid bare ( no puns please)!
Actually the ND team din't overachieve this year. Finished with
a 45-13 record to take their conference title as expected (MCC I
believe). I don't recall all of their out-of-conference games
but the Irish did start the season " on the road " losing series
against Miami and ASU. Their conference is considered weak by
college baseball standards so I'm happy they made the tournament.
Twas just pokin' fun at the situation regarding Miami-ND.
And see here,, Messr. Hunt, we not afraid to take on Miami in
*ALL* sports. We'll play 'em in ice hockey any day! 8^)

    MikeL
BTW , Hot rumor around ND baseball circles is that current Irish
manager Pat Murphy ( don't that sound apropos ) will be wooed by
the University of Miami to take over as the 'Canes' manager after
the series when Miami's current manager retires. Sources say that
ND will give permission for Miami to negotiate with Murphy. Would
be a great career move for Murphy as the job at Miami is considered
    on the college baseball's plums.

The University of Massachusetts lost its 2-time all Yankee Conference
tight end yesterday as Ron Villone was the number 1 draft choice of the
    Seattle Mariners.

Villone, who was a talented high school pitcher, decided to give
baseball at the college level a try in 1991 and posted a 4-3 record,
mostly as a short reliever. In 1992 on the baseball team's Florida
trip, he struck out a top player from the University of Central Florida
4 times - in front of a lot of scouts who were there to watch the UCF
player. He vaulted up the draft list throughout the season and Seattle
picked him number 1 yesterday. He's a lefthander, throws straight
    overhand with good heat.

This is somewhat reminiscent of Kirk Gibson, who went out for baseball
for the first time in his junior year at Michigan State and ended up
being a number 1 draft choice of the Detroit Tigers. His college
football coach said "I knew I told him to get a summer job but this is
ridiculous." Gibson did come back and play football in his senior year
at State. I hope Villone doesn't, despite how much the football team
could use him, because he could really screw up a promising career.
Villone is also one of the candidates for the Olympic team.

For a team that can't even win its league playoff and has few
scholarships to give, there have been a lot of players from UMass in
the last decade or so who've been drafted. Mike Flanagan, Jeff Reardon
(who actually wasn't drafted) and Gary DiSarcina are in the majors.
Dave Telgheder pitched a no-hitter for Tidewater against Pawtucket
recently. Glenn DiSarcina was brought up to play short for the White
Sox in their recent exhibition game with Da Cubs. And now Villone.

It's nice to see at least one other program at the University thriving,
    other than basketball.

Gotta love them Sooners! Oklahoma hasn't been to the NCAA baseball
tourney in something like 20 years, but they're now down to the final
six. Going into the regionals I think they were only ranked about 25th
in the country, but they've taken down more traditional powers
Mississippi State in the regional and Wichita State in the finals. If
they can avenge that crushing loss they took from hated Texas (assuming
Texas won last night), I know I'll be satisfied. Knocking off the
Miamis of the college baseball world to take it all is just too big a

    > I think I heard that the score for the Texas/OU game was 8-5. Sox
    > broadcaster Bob Starr was in mourning last night.

So was I. Oklahoma battled long and hard and kept coming back after
every comfortable Texas lead (except the last), but especially with
their best hitter out of the lineup it wasn't to be. Then I put the
Red Sox game on the radio and heard Starr eulogizing the Sooners. It
*is* tough to take when it's Texas putting on the finishing touches.

For most Oklahoma fans maybe the key to last night's game was that it
meant that star QB and part-time relief pitcher Cale Gundy got through
the spring without injury. Being able to play baseball was probably
part of the terms of Gundy's recruitment, but you can bet the OU
football coaches weren't thrilled about it...

    Glenn,
Has Gundy stated a preference for a pro career in baseball? Might have
a better shot in baseball. Paul Failla, backup QB for Rick Mirer at
ND is in the same predicament. He played on the ND baseball as well as
football team. He thinks he'll have a better shot playing baseball
when he graduates. He still has a shot at succeeding Mirer next year

    thinking to do next winter.

I haven't ever been able to "get into" the college world series, becuase
to me, the "system" seems so complex. Why don't they just have a
single elimination tournament, similar to the way they do it in
NCAA basketball?

And can someone explain the system now in effect to me? Perhaps I don't
understand it because it's never been explained to me.

And where did Pepperdine come from? I've never heard of them being
a baseball power. I mean, I expect to hear about Miami, Arizona State,

Pepperdine has been a very good baseball team for a lot of years. They've
just never made it this far before.

The double-elimination format is actually quite simple and it's very fair
for baseball. Single-elimination tournaments for baseball don't really
reward the top teams often enough. In other words, you lose twice and
you know you ain't good enough for the title.

The College World Series used to be a straight 8-team double elimination
affair. They paired off the 8 teams into 4 games and then followed up by
matching winners-winners and losers-losers until just one team without 2
 losses was left.

Now with CBS in the picture, they wanted one and only one final game. So,
they've broken the 8 teams into 2 four-team groups and have them play
double elim until 2 "survivors" are left. Then those two square off on
the last weekend for the whole shebang.

And, yes, now a team can go home with 1 loss and no title while another
team can go home with 1 loss and the title. I think the NCAA sold out to
the tube bucks but that ain't nothing new for the NCAA.

At least it's a little bit better now with the teams split into two
groups. I may be mistaken, but when they first went to the single-game
final, I think it was still a one-bracket double elim tournament. In
that format not only could a one-loss team go home, but they could go
home having had beaten their final opponent earlier in the tourney and
locked up 1-1, head-to-head. I believe this very situation happened to
Oklahoma State against Georgia in the first year of the single-game
final. But at least now it's somewhat "fair", like the MLB World
Series where each final opponent advances through the playoffs for
their "league", if not completely satisfying...

Double elimination is needed in softball and baseball tourneys since
the best team can be very easily beaten on a fluke and it's not really
a true test of the relative strengths of the teams. After all, in
major league baseball, 99% of the time teams will win 1/3 of their
games and lose 1/3 of their games, with the quality of the season being
determined by how they do in the other 1/3. You'll find in the other
sports more good teams losing less than 1/3 of their games and more bad
teams winning less than 1/3 of their games. Baseball doesn't hold
true to form and it's a very difficult sport to handicap.

Pepperdine's most famous former athlete is probably Dennis Johnson.
They beat Hawaii to advance to the College World Series.

No, I've just been in heavy duty engineering mode for a couple of

No, they wen't straight from a true double elimination 8-team
tournament to the present format. This happened to get the first
network televised chapmionship game, and, as mentioned,
Wichita State beat Texas in the championship. Wichita State came
out of their bracket with one loss, Texas came out of their bracket
undefeated, but the Shockers won the title. The following year
the same thing happened with Georgia over Oklahoma State.

As far as Pepperdine goes, they have been an NCAA tournament team
many times since the early 80's, as they and LMU have dominated the
West Coast conference. However, the Waves have won a regional only
once before, so haven't been in the national limelight as much as
Miami, Wichita State, Texas, Oklahoma State, FSU, LSU, and a couple
	of other teams.

Gotcha, Rich. I guess I just assumed that those teams (Texas and
Oklahoma State) got worked over by the system but in reality with
separate brackets with no common opponents their records are almost
meaningless. It'd be nice to have the finalists play two out of three,
but again CBS is looking for one game and one game only...

Massively clutch grand-slam home run in the bottom of the seventh from
a kid from Pepperdine in this one, after Texas had taken a strong lead
in the top of the inning to go ahead, 4-1. Didn't even look like he
swung hard or used his legs at all on the shot; just dropped the head
of that aluminum bat on a meatball and away it went. In spite of the
ESPN announcers' repeated commentary that he looked gassed and should
be lifted, Pepperdine's starter settled down after that bad inning and
worked through some trouble in the last two to go all the way for the
    victory.

I've got to admit that the ESPN announcing for the college games seems
distinctly (and maybe appropriately) amateurish compared to their MLB
coverage. Maybe because they and the audience don't really know the
players well and can't embellish, these guys are constantly stating the
obvious and dropping cliches. The commentary on the on-field action is
as if intended for someone who had just dropped in from another country
knowing little or nothing about baseball. Maybe that's their
demographics for these games; general college sports fans with marginal
    baseball interest...

It was funny because the announcers on ESPN just got done saying that
the Texas coaches told the pitcher he couldn't continue rely so much on

does he do ? He grooves one to Melendez and bye-bye. Loved the look on

While it's not college baseball, it will fit in this note.

Yesterday, at Champions, they were playing the Women's NCAA Softball
Championship game on ESPN. It was interesting to watch, but one of the
most interesting stats was a comparison of reaction time to the
pitch between Nolan Ryan and the girl who was pitching.

On a Nolan Ryan 95mph fastball, the batter has .42 seconds to react.
The girl who was pitching for UCLA pitched so fast that the batters
had .40 seconds to react.

I thought that was interesting.

Had to leave before I found out who won....

Plus the release point unables them to throw a real rising ball. No matter what
the baseball announcers say NO major leaguer with an overhand delivery can
throw a rising fastball. Tape studies have shown that the ball is always
travelling downward if it is released with a downward trajectory.

A better way to state this is that no pitcher with an overhand delivery can
throw a rising fastball in the strike zone. Anything with an initial trajectory
of up will end up over the battters head...

This is true, but it doesn't make much difference to the batter who's
expecting to see the ball drop at a certain rate but who is fooled
by a good high fastball with an exceptional amount of backspin on it
(which makes it appear to "rise"-- Sandy Koufax's fastball was
generally considered to be the best ever in this regard). Now in
softball, if the fastballs rise because of the delivery, the advantage
is lost due to expectations-- softball pitchers have to work on the
spin to make it drop back down.

That Nolan Ryan fastball is a pea, too, and a pea that moves. Tough to
even foul off that 9" circumference spheroid...

But the baseball players only have to worry about the ball actually moving in
3 direction (down, toward and away) and the fast pitch batter has to worry
about up,down toward and away...

The term rising fastball is just a pet peeve of mine....high fastball is a
better term....

Good explanation Glenn ... the 'rising' fastball is an optical
illusion. The batter has about .21 sec. to swing at the pitch, and his
eyes can usually extrapolate the trajectory for a fastball that usually
breaks down into the strike zone. A 'rising' fastball however, does not
drop *quite as much* as a 'normal' fastball, and the hitter's brain
translates the data as a 'hop' ...

O.K., I went back and got the facts straight, not relied on my memory.

The College World Series had 2 teams in 1947-1948, 4 teams in 1949,
and has had 8 teams since 1950. There have never been 16 teams in the
CWS. From 1950-1987, the CWS was a true 8-team, double-elimination
tournament. Starting in 1988, they divided into two 4-team brackets, each
of which met in a double-elimination tournament. Stanford won one bracket
with one loss, Arizona State won the other bracket with one loss. Stanford
beat ASU, 9-4, in the championship game. Scores from that year:

     ASU 4, California 2 Stanford 10, Fresno State 3
     Wichita State 5, Florida 4 CS-Fullerton 9, Miami 3
     Florida 6, California 5 Miami 8, Fresno State 4
     Wichita State 7, ASU 4 CS-Fullerton 5, Stanford 3
     ASU 10, Florida 1 Stanford 2, Miami 1
     ASU 4, Wichita State 3 Stanford 4, CS-Fullerton 1
     ASU 19, Wichita State 1 Stanford 9, CS-Fullerton 5
			Stanford 9, Arizona State 4

The following year, 1989, Texas entered the CWS final with no losses,
Wichita State had one loss, but Wichita State won the title:

     Florida St. 4, North Carolina 2	Texas 7, CS-Long Beach 1
     Wichita State 3, Arkansas 1	Miami 5, LSU 2
     Arkansas 7, North Carolina 3	LSU 8, CS-Long Beach 5
Florida St. 4, Wichita State 2	Texas 12, Miami 2
     Wichita State 8, Arkansas 4	LSU 6, Miami 3
Wichita State 7, Florida St. 4	Texas 12, LSU 7
Wichita State 12, Florida St. 9
			Wichita State 5, Texas 3

The last true, 8-team double-elimination tournament (1987) was won
by Stanford, just as the Cardinal won the first split-bracket CWS:

     Oklahoma State 8, ASU 3
     LSU 6, Florida State 2
     Texas 13, Arkansas 6
     Stanford 3, Georgia 2
     Florida State 3, ASU 0
     Arkansas 5, Georgia 4
     Oklahoma State 8, LSU 7
     Stanford 6, Texas 1
     LSU 5, Arkansas 2
     Texas 6, Florida State 4
     Oklahoma State 6, Stanford 2
     Stanford 6, LSU 5
Texas over Oklahoma State (don't have score)
     Stanford 9, Texas 3
