290.0. "The Chainsaw's Christmas Message" by CAMONE::WAY (Cheez-Whiz, Choice of Champions) Fri Dec 18 1992 13:27

Well, this is somewhat of a tradition, but I really did think that there
might not be a Chainsaw's Christmas message this year.

For the last couple of years I did a poem, or a poem parody, and it seemed
that the words kind of flowed out of this well inside of me, and after
I had captured and controlled the flow, the work was mostly done.....

This year, for lots of reasons, the well seems to be dry. It seems as
if there are no fancy words, or witty rhymes for the Chainsaw's
Christmas Message.

So, when fancy and witty doesn't work, I suppose that plain and simple,
a reflection back on traditional methods is not a bad substitute.

So, here goes:

This year has been a hard one. We have all seen hardship
in some form or fashion, whether it be sickness in the
family, friends having a hard time, or even just fighting
off the blues from the general downturn in things good
	and happy.

Here in SPORTS, I have felt that it has almost been like
people in battle. You go from day to day, and you
never know when the person next to you was going to get
	it.

We've lost some dear friends, this year in SPORTS. It's
not the only year we've lost them, but this year it seemed
that we lost more than ever before, and the very heart
of the file was cut deep.

In the Army, they have a toast: "To Absent Comrades",
and that toast has never applied so well to a SPORTS
Get Together as it did this year.

This was a testy year in SPORTS. People were arguing
and bickering more than I've ever seen, and it seemed
that it was at least part of the reaction to the down
	times we were all experiencing.

Lines that were once funny suddenly seemed to be annoying.
Stories that used to make you smile didn't quite do the
trick any more. People you used to take with a grain of
salt now bothered you more than a burr under a saddle,
or a raspberry seed stuck in your back teeth.

But, through it all, the one thing I've noticed is that
despite the down times, despite the departures, those of
us who are still here still have at least the spark of
the SPORTS spirit. As we go on, so it goes on, though
perhaps in a different form than that which gave us
The Trial, the supporating sore soaking through the
suit jacket, or even the Chainsaw's Christmas poem.

Christmas is a time of giving, and I've thought long
and hard about what I might give to SPORTS. Unfortunately,
unlike The Littlest Angel, I don't have a little box of
	treasures.

So, like I said in the opening, perhaps all I can give this
year, instead of smiles and levity, is the warmth and
fellowship of a simple, traditional "Merry Christmas".

So, to all the SPORTS noters, I'll say "Merry Christmas,
	Happy Chanukah, or Happy Whatever-You-Celebrate".

May you all have the happiest of New Years, and to steal
a line from L.A. Law, "may the saddest day of your new year
be now worse than your happiest day of this year".

	Finally, "To Absent Comrades".........

Merry Christmas,
'Saw

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.
It was the holiday season at a "restructuring" DEC. No,
this is not the lead-in to yet another cloyingly clever
'Night Before Christmas' parody. This is Tommy "Smile E.
Coyote" Brydie's way of saying, "Take care of yourselves.
I almost like some of you."

       Happy Holidays
