288.0. "University of Pittsburgh" by PFSVAX::JACOB (Back to work, still in pain!) Tue Dec 08 1992 23:43

Ok, I've waited long enuf to start this, and I finally decided to start
    it.

This is the University of Pittsburgh note, football, backsketball,
    whatever.

Football wise, Pitt is the school that has given suych stars to the NFL
as Tony Dorsett and Dan Marino. Plus other notables such as Craig
"Ironhead" Heyward, Tony Woods, Jerry Olsavsky, etc.

They've just finished a rancid year of football, under the coaching of
Paul Hackett, who was fired just over a week ago. Odds are that Johnny
Majors, who coached them to a National Championship in 1976 will be
hired soon as the new head coach.

What a great time to start a Pitt note, what with football conveniently
over. The end of this "rancid year" came with a loss in Hawaii that left
the Panthers with a slick 3 and 9. Notable victories included the pasting
of Kent formerly_State, Minnesota (which had it's own 2-9 season) and
that powerehouse Temple.

The talk about Johhny Majors returning is a lot like Knorr who moves
effortlessly from Dean's choking in the NCAA tourney to how great
recruiting is at No Carolina.

You need Foggy Fazio, Lee Majors, Hugh Green, and new uniforms.
Would be nice to see Pitt get back into national attention. Those
in the Pitt area might know, but Pitt has a storied history in college
football that pre-dates the '76 champeenship team. Pitt had monster
teams beginning in the 20's. Won a coupla champeenships back then
    ah believes.

How about black and gold?? 8^)

TTom, that is nothing but a big lie!! Chris does not move
"effortlessly" after Dean does his choke job. He immediately goes into
hiding for six months, THEN he talks about recruiting.

Ditka won't go to college coaching cause he ain't got the stamina fer
    recruiting.

Jackie "Sweetbreads Anyone?" Sherrill was firsted choice of the
athletic dept, but the new Chancellor for the University shot it down,
reportedly because of the bull nuts incident.

The press conference is scheduled for Friday at 11am.

The announcement that will be made is that Johnny Majors is returning
to the Pitt Panthers to try and rebuild this mess of a football team
that would've had trouble beating the geriatric ward at the local
    nursing home.

Majors has been given some big money for the assistant coaches HE
wants, and some big recruiting dollars.

Look fer Pitt to be back playing winning football in 2-3 years.

Just received my tickets to see the ILLINI massacre Pitt in CHAMPAIGN
on Feb. 13. Pitt is finally making good on a home and home from 6 years ago
when the Illini spanked them in Pittsburgh.

Should be a fine trip to the cornfields...

I heard the score from lasted night, (Pitt 82, Miami 76 ???) and it appeared
that Miami gave them a game. Anyone know if this is true?

Miami gave them a real good game. I think the biggest lead Pitt ever had was
8 points. It was a two point game at the half. Miami took a brief 1 point lead
at one point. Pitt won the game by controlling the boards. Pitt's got a better
team than I thought they might have, good thing Evans is there to screw them
up...
