272.0. "The light's out in the fridge, the butter is hard (DrM)" by LUNER::BROOKS (Moons Over My Hammy ...) Mon Jul 20 1992 21:16

I knew this was coming, but ....

It's time (11:59:59.9 :-) for The Doctor to move on. Unless I get an offer
I can't refuse, my last day at DEC will be this Friday.

I leave with mixed emotions. I had never planned to be a 20-year (or
even 10 year) employee here, and to a certain extent, I've been able to
call my shot on the way out. But ... ah, never mind.

I've learned a great deal about business, life and software (roughly in
that order too !), some lessons sweet, some bitter - all valuable. And
one of the things I'll miss most will be notes, and conferences like
SPORTS. The debate, the fun, the friends I've made are going to be hard
    to replace.

And I *know* that when I leave the scene, the Oilers will indeed win
the Super Bowl, and the Rockets will return to the Finals, and I'll
have to settle for a Internet "heh heh heh".

    Damn. :-)

But at least I know I made a big impact on the SPORTS scene with the
Anti-Celtic bash note. Bringing the beacon of Objective Reason to the
Holy Green Sweatsocks and Green Dockers (tm) will warm my heart on a
    cold winter night.

Thanks to all of you, but especially to these people :

Walt - For covering my a** in rotis leagues, even making a decent trade
now and then, and being a loyal puppet. :-)

Dennis "The Bibe" P. - Wherever you are, know that I had a lot of fun
talking boxing with you off and on-line. Thanks for the Alexis Arguello
picture, and being my running mate in NoTY. RIP partner ....

John H. and Steve N. - Working with the Pats and Counts was a honor and
pleasure that I'll cherish for a long time.

Saw - Pity I didn't get the chance to drill you in a football scrimmage
to settle this football/rugby argument for once and for all, but there
    will be another day ...

/Don - You were a near-worthy adversary. But more importantly, you
touched me deeply when you admitted off-line that Wilt was > Bill
Russell. Such intellectual honesty is rare. Thanks, friend.

Karen - ... for standing me up at the altar. I was meant to be single !

Bob Hunt - Reading you was better than most columnists. Consider a
    second career.

JD - Always fun to joust with you - esp. when you endorsed a losing
    cause. :-)

Hawk - Learned a lot from you guy. Damn good thing beer drinking wasn't
    one of them ! :-)

Denny - You embodied the Jihad Faithful, and made my life all too
    entertaining ....

If I missed anyone, I'm sorry. But hey, I'll be in and out until
Friday. There are things I can't say on-line, but send mail, and I'll
    pass along my address.

    Peace,

    Dr Midnight

I'm sorry to hear about you being shot and I think DEC's the bigger

You've certainly been a major player in the locker room, taking all the

    FWIW -

For anybody who's being "rightsized" and leaving the sportsbar, if you
have a PC with a modem, I understand that you can send us mail and
receive mail if you have an account from MCI. I believe it costs about
$7.00 per month and it costs you nothing to receive mail.

This could be a way to stay in touch with your "network" and friends.

I found out about this in the SERP notesfile (Noted::Serp) and I also
extracted the name of the MCI contact if you want more information.
If anybody would like it, send me some 'trons and I'll reply.

Naturally, standard disclaimer - I have no personal, financial or any
    interest in MCI.

    I remain,

George -

Well, since you've sent me mail over the last year, I've had a feeling I'd
see one of these notes in here one day.

Good luck - and I do hope you find a job that will use your professional
talents and ambitions to the fullest.

Still remember the first time I met you - when you sauntered into the Sitting
Bull and axed if we were the SPORTS folks. Still cracks me up.

And, BTW, did you ever get that oil leak fixed with yer Hyundai?

Well, adios, and remember these unarguable facks (TM)

1. Worn Moon has inflated dastistics because of the run n' shoot.

2. Ralph Sampson was always a stiff, and he picked fights on little guys.

3. FloJo did 'roids.

4. Wilt was a stiff.

5. The Oilers play wimply-girly-mon football.

6. Tony Rice, Major Harris, and Andre Ware are better suited to work the
home appliance section of Sears then they are to be NFL QB's.

7. The Browns rule! WOOF WOOF WOOF

8. Phil Simms is God.

9.. Larry Bird is God.

10. Bill Russell is God.

11. The Padres and Astros both had uniforms that were like softball uniforms.

12. The Chargers should have the lightning bolts down the side of the pants.

13. You don't play zones in 3 on 3 football.

14. Akeem < RObinson < Ewing

15. I still say you should have gotten a Pat Riley hairdo

16. Doug Williams was wearing red slippers in 1987. He clicked them axidentally
and 'poof' he was back home.

17. Phil SImms > John Elway > Jay Scroeder > Doug Williams > Worn Moon

18. Byron Scott does Dr. Midnight impersonations during the playoffs ;-)

19. Browns > Steelers > Bengals > Oilers

20. All of your favorite teams are worse than my favorite teams!

Take Care...

Take 290 towards Woostah. Get off at the Rte 140 North exit. This
will put you on rte 140 going north. Follow the road. It will
go downhill for maybe a mile. If it's light out, you'll pass by a
nursery/tree farm on your right. A little further and you'll see a
small bunch of stores on your right. The Other Place is the first
store there. Turn right into the parking lot, pahk de cah and enter
    the door.
You've gone too far it you reach a traffic light (intersection of 140
and rte 70). If you reach it, take appropriate actions.

Thanks again for making me welome in SPORTS. I learned a lot here. I

To create a ChuckECheeses training ground for parents:

	1. Invite the neighborhood kids in.

	2. Supply plenty of candy bars, cookies,
	   and jelly beans

	3. Put some toys out.

	4. Let the sugar high kick in.

	5. Bring in parents in small groups, for small time
	   periods.

	6. Increase time periods to the target zone of 60 minutes....

visually pleasing ways to shoot through large sums of money in a 5 minute

When my 6 year old was 2-1/2, we took him there fer his sister's birthday.

This is the same kid who got the woodie watching the Disney flick.

He had never been there, and to this day, doesn't like getting near
people in costume as large rodents, etc.

Well, I was holding the kid when ol' Chuck E. hisself waltzes in and
shakes his hand, almost out of nowhere, Robbie dug his hands into my
neck SUPER tight, let out this blood curdling scream, and loaded his
diaper, BIGTIME, immediately. Literally scared the crap outta the
    kid.

Ah yes, Chuck E. Cheeses...there's one just down the road from me in
Manchester, I'm sure we'll end up giving Meghan a birthday party there
sooner or later. A college friend used to be the mouse at the one on
the North Shore, he said that each day you could count on serveral kids
pulling on your tail, throwing the plastic balls from the "Sea of
Balls" at you, running you over as they run frantically to the next
    video game, etc..

=Bob=, when did you work at Wang? I was there from Sept. 1982 to March
    1987 (I was a writer in PC/2200 documentation my first 3-1/2 years

There used to be a similar chain around when my kids were younger
called "Showbiz Pizza." A bunch of mechanical critters put on a "stage
show", and in between, the kids could play ski ball and other video
games. For $20 they could walk out with a plastic whistle and a smile
on their faces. Adults should not go in without asprin, and stronger
    drugs are recommended.

I hate to interupt this rodent rapture, but I heard from one of our dear
departed brethren today - Mr. Robert Hunt. Bob and I always bantered back
and forth when the Jints/Iggles played, and I missed that this weekend - first
time I met Bob was at a Jints/Iggles game at the Vet back in 1987.

ANyway, Bob is doing pretty well. The consulting company he's in, which consists
of 4 ex-Deccies, has 3 of 'em full-time billed. Bob is enjoying some bittersweet
irony in that DEC sales folks have been contacting the firm for help in
responding to some customer needs, so they get to do their old job, cept they
get to charge DEC at consultant/contractor wages, and not what they were
paid by DEC.

He said all is well with the family also.

Shortly after making a sizable fortune by selling Atari, Nolan Bushnell
decided to open a chain of places for family, playing, and spending large
sums of money. Picture a very large arcade, including a "ball pit" (where
kids can get lost in a sea of brightly colored plastic balls, counter serivce
for pizza for kids and adults, and a large "theater" where automated figures
similar to what you see at Disney World entertain every half hour or so. Sound
pretty good? Well add to the mix about 200 kids of all ages, who, simply by
the nature of the atmosphere, feel they have permission to act like uncivilized
creatures.

It's really a lot of fun.

I was at Wang only from 1983-1985. Worked in Manufacturing Information Systems
in Tewksbury. Writing COBOL to interface with AMAPS, the big manufacturing
system at the time. I really liked it, but at the end things started going
bad, and they made some stupid management decisions. I left at the beginning
of the end.
272.127Sensory OverloadCAMONE::MAZURIt ain't the meat, it's the lotion.Wed Nov 25 1992 14:2013
I went there once with my brood. Sensory Overload is the only phrase
that adequately describes the place. It's a place where parents feel
they can let there kids misbehave. If all parents were as permissive
as the ones we encountered at CEC, there is no hope for this planet.
If you have trouble dealing with kids that are potential future juvenile
    delinquents, don't go to CEC.

We saw kids running up and down the skee-ball alleys throwing those
wooden skeeballs (ouch!). Most of the kids tried to break things. I guess
you'd call it supervised vandalism. A micrcosm of all social ills.

 SUBJ: REMOTE SALES SUPPORT (1-800-DEC-SALE)

**** Please share this message with all field employees ***

A decision was recently announced to close Remote Sales Support in
   the U.S. Area.

Feedback from the U.S. field organization, product management, and
many other organizations is that Remote Sales Support is an integral
part of the support infrastructure which saves the field selling
time, and allows them to spend more time with customers.
We have heard from scores of people about the responsiveness and
   effectiveness of this organization.

We have listened to your concerns and plan to retain the Remote Sales
Support group, because you view them as providing a valuable set of
   support services.

It is a tribute to the quality and importance of the work performed
by Remote Sales Support, that so many people took the time to let
us know how much the function was appreciated and needed.

   Regards,
