270.0. "(Unusual) World Games" by CSTEAM::FARLEY (Megabucks Winner Wannabe) Tue Jul 07 1992 18:05

Last night while eating a (late) dinner, I was watching ESPN's
Sportscenter and it was followed by some show called "world games" or
    something like that.
This episode was filmed in Switzerland and covered two sports which
have the country nuts but is not found anywhere else. I was intrigued
and watched about 20 minutes of it.
The first game had some unpronouncable name but it was really weird to
watch. There's a guy (batter) swinging a fishing pole like stick.
Connected to the stick was a string and at the end was ~8" cylindrical
wood thing. As the guy swung this around his haid, like a bolo, he'd
try to whack a black disk, ~2" diameter, 3/4" thick off a small mound
of clay. About 150-200 yards away were ~6 of his teammates and ~6
opponents carrying what can best be described as a pizza oven spatula.
These guys jobs were to hit the "ball" in mid-air and stop it from
making any distance. You are allowed to throw your pizza spatula in
the air to intercept too! What I found interesting was the commentator
said that it was like trying to hit a golfball in flight.
One guy hit it about 275 meters!

The other game was a wrestling match where the competitiors wear (over
their street clothes) a canvas diaper. One hand goes around the back
and grabs the beltline of the diaper and the other hand grabs a front
hem. Once both are in position, the rule says one hand MUST always be
holding the diaper and they try to get the other guy's shoulders pinned
to the sand. It was a lot like suomo wrestling.

Jest thought I'd expand y'alls mind a bit!

    I remain,
a differnt kind of Timothy Leary,

    	I watched that, too.

That game was called Harnusse. There was no string on the
pole. It was kinda like a very long fishing rod with a
wood cylinger on the end. this puck-like thing was placed
on the end of this set of rails. The batter swung the pole
much like a golfer would, although the pole was much longer
    	than a golf club.

And, there were no offensive players in the field. That is,
all the offensive team bats and then they switch places. The
defenders have these large wood things that look like placards.
They use them to stop the puck-like thing. They even threw them
into the air, much like most of us did back when we were kids
    	and playing baseball.

The one fella said he got 72 or so points. He said he hit one
of the puck-like things 300 yards.

Interesting game. Sometimes I wonder what prompted such a game.

I think that this is part of a series on The Discovery Channel. I caught
a part of this, too. I was flipping channels and I saw all these people
that looked like they were throwing stop signs into the air to stop balls
being hit by a very flexible golf type club. I especially liked the guy
driving considering he was about as un-golf-ly looking as you possibly
imagine. I mean Craig Stadler has nothing on this guy.

    Scott,
I used artistic license to describe the thing they were whirling
around. The overall length of ~10 feet allowed the tip to wrap around
the commentators legs, if you remember that part. That's why I used
the string part of the whip.

    not taken personally though.

    Dear MtM or somebody else with privs;

Since this is a new note, I have a problem with the (weird) part of
the title. Sorta could be interpreted as 'merican arrogance because of
NIH or NPH. Could we have it modified to something like (unusual)?

    'preciate it

Kev, weird could also mean supernatural or of the occult, like in
Shakespeare's day....

If you are the author, you can change the title. Just look up
set note in notes help.

You still should be the author. As long as your name is on it.....

I'm personally fascinated by the Scottish sport of heaving telephone
    poles. Definitely a "manly" sport.

The Caber Toss.

If you've ever seen it in person, it's an amazing thing.

Strangely enough, it's the only sport at a typical Scottish that is not
"standardized".

For example the shotput, hammer throw, bale toss, all of those have
more or less standard weights. However, if I remember correctly, the
caber only has to be a certain length, possibly width, and the weight
can really vary.

The typical competitor at the Scottish games looks like he just stepped
out of any NFL offensive line. And for the games at least, it's not
at all unusual for Bike shorts to be worn under the kilt, along with
a weight belt for back support.

Well, it's athletics first, authenticity second 8^)

I've always liked the saying "Why nothing's worn under the kilt".

If you think about it, it makes perfect sense.....

PS I've got to get to the Games at least once this summer.

    Speaking of Kilt's

Tomorrow (and maybe Sunday, I dunno) someplace in New Cowshire
is something called "The Highland Games". Haven't the foggiest idea
what they are so therefore, this is the appropriate note. Right?

    Also,
heard that the English gave bagpipes to the Scots as a joke
bu thtta they haven't gotten it yet!

    many ->  ;^)
