256.0. "Netball (English version of Basketball!!)" by CHEFS::BROWNA1 () Wed Apr 15 1992 12:59

    Hello..

Let me introduce myself.... My name is Anita Brown (soon to be Slater),
I will be moving to Bolton (Mass.) at the end of this month (April) as
I am getting married in July.

To cut a long story short - I am the Captain of the Digital Netball
team here in the U.K. and I have been playing since I was 10 years old.
I have made enquiries to find out whether Netball is played over in the
U.S. but haven't really had an answer... So, I thought I'd try using
the NOTES file. Please excuse any mistakes that I have made in adding
this note (if any) as this is a 'first' for me....

To get back to the reason for this note, if any of you can help me find
out if Netball is played and a contact name I would be very grateful as
I play 2/3 times a week over here in the U.K. and I'm really going to
miss it when I move out at the end of the month!

    Thanks (in advance),
    Anita.

Welcome Anita Brown, soon to be Anita Slater! Can we call you Gator?
Just kidding, but it would make for a good ::sports nickname,
especially if you stay on as a regular noter, which we hope you do...

Regarding women's "netball" over here, DEC does have a women's
basketball league which, I believe, plays it's games very close to
where you're moving, so you're in luck. Not sure, but I think it's
seasonal (winter) and they're probably done playing right now. Maybe
you should try your athletic skills on women's softball, which is
    probably just starting up...

    Good luck, welcome, and enjoy.

See, basketball was invented in this country and they first used peach
baskets at each end of the gym. Why they couldn't use apple baskets
or pear baskets was a quirk whose origin is unknown. Thus they called
the game basketball. Had they used cardboard boxes, we'd probably be
playing something called "boxball" today. Or they could have used a
large pair of pants to throw the ball into, and we'd have
    "trouserball."

Now, by the time the English heard of the game, the baskets had been
replaced by nets, so they had no reason to call it "Basketball", but
used the more logical "netball" instead. We, being stubborn yankees,
kept to the old name whether it made sense or not. Sorta like our game
of football where the foot is hardly used at all.

But why the English put eggs and candy in an Easter Net is still a
    mystery to me.

256.6Bolton a 'snob' town...CHEFS::BROWNA1Wed Apr 15 1992 14:5222
Guys,

Thanx for the replies... I didn't know Bolton was a "snob" town... But
then being English I'm sure to fit in (or so most people believe!!).

Getting back to the reason for this note... I've played basketball over
here and I'm afraid I'm not very good - although if I can't find a netball
team I'll probably have to play basketball.. The only problem is that in
netball you are NOT allowed to run with the ball, in other words once you
catch it you stop in your tracks... Obviously, as I have been playing
netball for so long I don't seem to 'fit in' when I play basketball (for
the above reason!!)

On another note... (excuse the pun)... Are there any good gyms that you
can recommend in the Bolton area, at present I go circuit training approx.
4 times a week and I'm hoping to keep that going - do you have circuit
training classes (with weights)???

I will definitely be keeping an eye on this notes file when I arrive in the
U.S. (depending on whether or not I get a transfer with Digital!)..
Cheers,
Anita.

There is a Paradise Gym in downtown Hudson. Hudson borders Bolton.

They would have everything you need to circuit train.

256.8Welcome aboard!SALES::THILLWed Apr 15 1992 15:3326
    Anita,

Welcome to the U.S. If you've never been here before, I'm sure you'll
find a lot of peculiar expresions. People won't know what you'r talking
about if you say that a huge Lorry ran you off the motorway, and that
after your car broke down, you had trouble finding the leeever to open
the bonnet. If someone gets pissed, they are angry, not (necesarily)
drunk. A "football coach" is not a large vehicle with approximately 40
singing, drinking scarf-wearing hooligans, but the guy who stands on
the sideline of a "gridiron" match with a clipboard and headphones,
speaking in a language that only SOUNDS like English. "Let's get the
the nickel back in thre on the 3rd and long situation, but we've got to
watch the weak-side play-action with this run and shoot offesive
formation...." Confused? I thought so. Maybe later you can explain cricket
    to us.

Basketball (or netball) is primarily a winter sport here in the US. If
you are interested in staying in shape, you might consider joining a
team in the digital soccer (fitba) league. The league starts playing in
May and is co-ed. Check out SMAUG::DEC_SOCCER for more details on the
    league.

    Cheers,

    Tom

Are you telling me that women play soccer...? Or just join in the
training?? I'd be keen to do the training but I certainly couldn't play -
not through want of trying! It's just my feet can't control a ball!!

I take circuit training classes over here and would be available to take
classes for any teams in the Maynard area... It's pretty gruelling as I
go to circuit classes taken by the army - and I copy how they train in my
classes (you certainly work up a SWEAT!!)..

Thanks for all your replies!
Anita.

Hey Bruce, sure, the manliest of all manly men play American football,
just ask Antione and Blaine, the 2 biigest fans of the Oilers and
Packers. Yup, nothing *I'd* rather do than wear tight, brightly colored
spandex pants, surround myself with big, muscley manly weight lifter
types, and pat each other on the butt after making a "nice play"

By the way, aren't you from San Francisco?

Not only is Bruce (Bruce) from San Fran, aka "Frisco," but he's
been a unabashed proponent of "twinkle toe" football played by
    coddled men wearing off-pink uniforms.

And *he* dares put down men who play soccer.

I was told, it's called football because the ball is one foot long.
