246.0. "Chainsaw's Sports Time Machine" by RUGBY1::way (Son House RULES!) Fri Mar 06 1992 16:46

Okay, I got the idea for this note when I was listening to Dana Carvey
imitiate Strom Thurmond on SNL, talking about "softer porn transporting
women to a different time".

Anyway, I got to thinking, what if I had a time machine, and I could travel
back and see, live and in person, ANY sporting event as it happened. What
would I choose?

Well, I picked a few, not in priority order:

	1. Ted Williams playing in that last double-header in 1941.

	2. Bobby Thompson hitting the shot heard round the world.

	3. Watching Shoeless Joe Jackson play ball.

	4. Watching Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics.

	5. Watching the Green Bay Packers win Championships in the early 60s.

	6. Watching Lou Gehrig give his emotional farewell speech.

	7. Watching the Bruins win against St Louis in 1970.

What are some of the events you'd transport yourself back to see?

I'd like to have been in the stands when Carolina came from 8 back with
:17 seconds to go to beat Duke in the 70's.

BTW, SportsSouth replayed the entire 7th game of the Boston Red Sox vs.
Cincinnati Reds 1975 Game 7 last night. Great stuff, though I doubt a
BoSox fan woulda had the stomach to watch it.

    2. Don Larsen's perfect game, 1956 World Series.

    3. Ted William's final game, Fenway, 1960.

The John Deere game.. Oh I was there...
    2. Tony Coniglio (sp) last home run.... Oh, I was there too....
    3. 1968 Darmouth College's Football home games that year.. Went

I was much more "fanatical" about sports when I was a kid, which is why
my sports wishes are from that era...

    	- Super Bowl III. As a huge Namath & Jets fan, this was a
    	  great moment for me.

    	- Game 6(?), the Willis Reed hip injury psych-job game against
the Lakers in 1970. Madison Square's roof had to be reshingled
          afterwards...

    	- '69 Mets World Series Game 5. Again, a huge fan back then.

246.7Olympic year influence...ROYALT::ASHEOk, but I'm really leaving soon...Fri Mar 06 1992 17:1814
In the infield to watch the Beamon jump in Mexico City.

At Game 7 of the '68 Series... (I remember bits of riding down the
street Downtown that night, but not much else...)

Watching Namath in the Super Bowl.

In Innsbruck when Klammer came down at the downhilll (if I could see
more than a second of him)...

Lake Placid at "the hockey game"

Don't think I'd take my chances to see Jesse in 36, I'd want to come
    out of there in tact.

The last game of the 1918 World Series.

David absolutely stoning Goliath when the chips were down. Bet it was
better than Wilt getting shut down by Russell. Woulda been nice to go
over to the temple and drop a bag of shekels on the little guy to win,
    too.

The sixth game of the '86 World Series. I'd go back and drink a lot
more so that I will have passed out before the ninth inning.

Ted Williams wacking that Oephus pitch in the All-star game.

    Good Friday topic, BTW.

Here are a few that would definitely be on my list....

Jacie Robinson in his prime, in a game where he steals home...

Willie Mays in his prime. I did see him hit a homer agaist the Mets in '67.

ANY game in the following ballparks: Polo Grounds, Ebbets Field, Forbes Field,
Crosley Fiels, Connie Mack/Shibe Park, Old Comiskey, Braves Field, the Pre-Wall
Fenway (before 1933).

Rocket Richard playing for the Habs.

Any game involving Brazil from the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. Pele was 28 years
old and "Samba Soccer" was at it's artistic zenith.

I could come up with more, but that's it for now

    re "high-low" jackpot:

I think .33 is referring to the Channel 5 (Boston) candlepin bowling
show. At the end of the program, both participants get a chance to
convert the 1-7-10 split with one shot. If the bowler makes it, he/she
wins whatever is in the jackpot (I think it starts at $50, and goes up
$25 when neither bowler wins it).

Yeah, and in October 1968 both the Mets and Orioles were home, watching a not
quite so fat Mickey Lolich baffle the Cardinals in the World Series. The Mets
were coming off a 9th place finish, th first year of Gil Hodges as their manager.
From what I remember from the 1968 yearbook, the Mets were being talked about
like the Seattle Mariners (on the field) are now as a team that was up an coming
an might even be respectable the following year.

Who woulda known?

Dan'l,

If you do re-live your aquatic experiences, PLEASE be careful of going
