243.0. "Official CRICKET Note" by RIPPLE::DEVLIN_JO (Seinfeld roolz!) Thu Feb 27 1992 17:44

As most of you probably know, the World Cup in Cricket is currently in
its first round. Yesterday there were two matches, one in Hamilton,
New Zealand, and the other in Sydney. Today there are matches in
Melbourne and Hobart in Tazmania (beautiful place!)

    Yesterday's Results:

    At Hamilton, NZ

New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka 206-9 by six wickets.

    At Sydney:

South Africa defeated Australia 170-9 by 9 wickets.

I'll post the current standing in the next note. Some of you were
lucky enough to receive cricket cards I brought back when I was down
under. I still have a few left. Perhaps a contest is in order!

    World Cup, First Round, Standings:

    New Zealand 2 - 0 4 points
    England 1 - 0 2 points
    West Indies 1 - 0 2 points
    South Africa 1 - 0 2 points
    Sri Lanka 1 - 1 2 points
    India 0 - 1 0 points
    Pakistan 0 - 1 0 points
    Zimbabwe 0 - 1 0 points
    Australia 0 - 2 0 points

England plays the West Indies today, so unless they draw, someone
will be tied with the Kiwis. Pakistan and ZImbabwe go at it also, so
one should join the winner's ranks.

Hi,

Ex-pat Matt Knipfer checking in from Sydney Australia. I'll get around to
entering an intro note a little later, but first a World Cup Cricket update:

RE: -2

The way the standings work is a team gets 2 pts for a win, 0 pts for a loss
and if there is no result, each team gets 1 pt.

WORLD CUP TABLE P	W	L	NR	PTS

New Zealand 3	3	0	0	6
Sri Lanka 4	2	1	1	5
England 3	2	0	1	5
West Indies 3	2	1	0	4
Pakistan 3	1	1	1	3
South Africa 3	1	2	0	2
Australia 3	1	2	0	2
India 3	0	2	1	1
Zimbabwe 3	0	3	0	0

Round robin series with the top four reaching the semi finals.

This system has it's drawbacks as the Poms (read England) found out Sunday in
Adelaide. They had bowled Pakistan out for a measly 74 runs on a difficult
wicket and were cruising at 1-17 from six overs when the rains came, hence the
NR.

THE TEAMS:

AUSTRALIA:
Australia started favorites for the cup with odds of 5/2, I think, followed by
England, Pakistan and the West Indies. Australia however looked pretty ordinary
in losing their first two matches and their price has fallen dramatically.
They were awfully lucky to get by India by one (1) run on Sunday or they
would be in the cellar with Zimbabwe. They take on England this Thursday in
Sydney. This is a match they must win if they want to make the semi's.

Players to watch:
David Boon--The best batsman in the world at the moment.
Allan Border--The Captain--second in career test runs--great competitor.
Craig McDermott--Fast Bowler--He's the workhorse of the Aussie pace attack.

NEW ZEALAND:
NZ are one of the suprises of the cup but not really as they get to play the
entire round robin series on their home wickets, which are quite a bit slower
than the ones here in Australia. All the other teams have to adjust from wicket
to wicket. They will probably make the semi's but I dont't look for them to do
much after that.

Players to watch:
Mark Greatbach--Wacked it all over the park to score 68 off 60 balls vs SA

SRI LANKA:
Sri Lanka is the other suprise but look for them to fade down the stretch.
Don't know alot about them 'cause I haven't seen them play.

Players to watch:
Don't know. Can't pronounce their names. Try Arjuna Ranatunga or Champaka
Ramanayaka. The announcers here pick either the first or last name, whichever
is easiest, practice it about a hundred times and stick with it.

ENGLAND:
England has a strong team, but nobody outside of England wants to see them win
it. Plenty of talent should see them through to the semi's.

Players to watch:
Ian Botham--Back in the team after being on the outer with the powers that be.
Graeme Hick--From Zimbabwe originally..classic shotmaker
Graeme Gooch--Has been sacked and reinstated to the captaincy once or thrice

WEST INDIES:
The West Indies were once the most powerful team around, but they are in the
midst of rebuilding through a youth movement and have been rather inconsistent
of late. They have oodles of talent though, and if they get on a roll, they will
be hard to beat. They're my pick.

Players to watch:
Richie Richardson--The captain..great batsman..smart player
Malcolm Marshall--Once the fastest of all bowlers--struggling to find form

INDIA:
India is not playing real well at the moment. Don't look for too much from them.
They have some talent, but they lack experience.

Players to watch:
Kapil Dev--Classic all rounder..he can do it all..one of the best ever

PAKISTAN:
Have not lived up to expectations because of some injuries to their side. If
they stay healthy they should get through.

Players to watch:
Imran Kahn--Captain--The prince (yes one of those Kahns) the women love him
Wasim Akram--Great all rounder
Javed Miandad (sp)--Great batsman--among the five best ever..getting old

SOUTH AFRICA:
South Africa has just returned to the cricket world after being on the outer for
20 odd years. They remain very competitive however, and pounded the aussies
last Wednesday at the SCG. They were once the dominant force in cricket ala
the Springboks in rugby. They have slid a bit since beating Australia, but could
be there in the end.

Players to watch:
Kepler Wessels--Captain..Played several test for Australia in the mid 80's
Alan Donald--Very very fast bowler..fastest in the game right now

ZIMBABWE:
They are not quite up to the standard of the other teams. I have never seen
them play.

Well there you have it..A team by team breakdown of the Cricket World Cup.
I realize you guys arn't taking this World Cup thang to serious like, what
with college hoops hotting up and baseball season right around the corner,
but for me, cricket is the only game in town so to speak...at least until I get
that satellite dish put in!!

This is going to sound really stupid, but I don't care.

I have figured out the rules of rugby, so I must have at least a few
brain cells that are working.

Could someone, preferably someone who knows, please post a little
description of the cricket rules here. I've watched it before (used
to catch it on SKY Channel while in France) and it is a fascinating game.
I know about batters and bowlers, and how the bowler is trying to knock
the bales off the wickets, and how the batter is protecting them....

Can we have a brief summary of the rooles, and a brief glossary of
the terms. For example, what is an "over".....

I've never had that.

When we were in da Bahamas mon, all dey had, besides da rum, mon, was
Kalik beer.

Actually, the beer wasn't bad, but was EXPENSIVE, going for $5 Bahamian
(which was about $4.85) per can in the hotel. We soon learned that
drinking Goombay Smashes was much more tasty and economical...

I loved the way they would pronounce Kalik though. It was a cross between
saying "Klick" and Ka-leek....

And the street vendors were cool too. They'd call you mon, or if you were
with a girl, they'd call her, invariably, "pretty lady".....

I'm feelin' anyting mon dat will get me back to da islands, you know mon?

I'll drink Fosters, especially in the oil cans. But I like Redback better.

My favorite is probably Newcastle Brown. A pint of Newcy Broon, some
great blues, and a hot baby (oh Mary Stuart Masterson oh please oh please)
and i'm all set....

from the cricket notes file, I was able to get some laws, or rules:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The laws are not reproduced with the permission of the MCC.

LAW 1 - The Players

1) Number of players and captain
A match is played between two sides each of eleven players, one of whom shall
be captain. In the event of the captain not being available at any time a
deputy shall act for him.

2) Nomination of players
Before the toss for innings, the captain shall nominate his players who may not
thereafter be changed without the consentof the opposing captain.

NB
(a) More or less than eleven players a side
A match may be played by agreement between sides of more or less than eleven
players but no more than eleven players may field.

The laws are not reproduced with the permission of the MCC.

LAW 2 - Substitutes and Runners: Batsman or Fieldsman leaving the field:
				 Batsman retiring
				 Batsman commencing innings

1) Substitutes
Substitutes shall be allowed by right to field for any player who during the
match is incapacitated by illness or injury. The consent of the opposing
captain must be obtained for the use of a substitute if any player is prevented
from fielding for any other reason.

2) Objection to substitues
The opposing captain shall have no right of objection to any player acting as
substitute in the field, nor as to where he shall field, although he may object
to the substitute acting as wicket-keeper

3) Substitute not to bat or bowl
A substitute shall not be allowed to bat or bowl

4) A player for whom a substitute has acted
A player may bat, bowl or field even though a substitute has acted for him

5) Runner
A runner shall be allowed for a batsman who during the match is incapacitated by
illness or injury. The player acting as runner shall be a member of the batting
side and shall, if possible, have already batted in that innings.

6) Runner's equipment
The player acting as runner for the injured batsman shall wear batting gloves
and pads if the injured batsman is so equipped.

7) Transgression of the laws by an injured batsman or runner
An injured batsman may be out should his runner break any one of
Laws 33:(Handled the ball), 37:(Obstructing the field) or 38:(Run out). As
striker he remains himself subject to the laws. Futhermore, should he be out of
his ground for any purpose and the wicket at the wicket-keeper's end be put down
he shall be out under Law 38:(Run out) or Law 39:(Stumped) irrespective of the
position of the other batsman or the runner and no runs shall be scored.

When not the striker, the injured batsman is out of the game and shall stand
where he does not interfere with the play. Should he bring himself into the
game in any way then he shall suffer the penalties that any transgression of the
laws demands.

8) Fieldsman leaving the field (my comment - players read this)
No fieldsman shall leave the field or return during a session of play without
the consent of the umpire at the bowler's end. The umpire's consent is also
necessary if a substitute is required for a fieldsman, when his side returns to
the field after an interval. If a member of the fielding side leaves the field
or fails to return after an interval and is absent from the field for longer
than 15 minutes, he shall not be permitted to bowl after his return until he
has been on the field for atleast that lenght of playing time for which he was
absent. This restriction shall not apply at the start of a new days's play.

9) Batsman leaving the field or retiring
A batsman may leave the field or retire at any time owing to illness, injury or
other unavoidable cause, having previously notified the umpire at the bowler's
end. He may resume his innings at the fall of a wicket, which for the
purposes of this law shall include the retirement of another batsman.

If he leaves the field or retires for any other reason he may only resume his
innings with the consent of the opposing captain

When a batsman has left the field or retired and is unable to return owing to
illness, injury or other unavoidable cause his innings is to be recored as
'retired, not out'. Otherwise it is to be recorded as 'retired, out'.

10) Commencement of a batsman's innings
A batsman shall be considered to have commenced his innings once he has stepped
on to the field of play

NB
(a) Substitutes and runners
For the purposes of these laws allowable illnesses or injuries are those which
occur at any time after the nomination by the captain of their teams.

The laws are not reproduced with the permission of the MCC.

LAW 3 - The umpires

1) Appointment
Before the toss for innings two umpires shall be appointed, one for each end, to
control the game with absolute impartiality as required by the laws

2) Change of umpire
No umpire shall be changed during a match without the consent of both captains

3) Special conditions
Before the toss for innings, the umpires shall agree with both captains on any
special conditions affecting the conduct of the match

4) Wickets
The umpires shall satisfy themselves before the start of the match that the
wickets are properly pitched

5) Clock or watch
The umpires shall agree between themselves and inform both captains before the
start of the match on the watch or clock to be followed during the match

6) Conduct and implements
Before and during a match the umpires shall ensure that the conduct of the game
and the implements used are strictly in accordance with the laws

7) Fair and unfair play
The umpires shall be the sole judges of fair and unfair play

8) Fitness of ground, weather and light
(a) The umpires shall be the sole judges of the fitness of the ground, weather
    and light for play.
    (i) However, before deciding to suspend play or not to start play or not to
resume play after an interval or stoppage, the umpires shall establish
whether both captains (the batsmen at the wicket may deputise for their
	 captain) wish to commence or to continue in the prevailing conditions;
if so, their wishes shall be met.
(ii) In addition, if during play, the umpires decide that the light is unfit
only the batting side shall have the option of continuing play. After
agreeing to continue to playin unfit light conditions, the captain of
the battins side (or a batsman at the wicket) may appeal against the
light to the umpires, who shall uphold the appeal only if, in their
opinion, the light has deteriorated since the agreement to continue
	 was made
(b) After any suspension of play, the umpires, unaccompanied by any players or
officials shall, on their own initiative, carry out an inspection
immediately the conditions improve and shall continue to inspect at
intervals. Immediately the umpires decide that play is possible they shall
call upon the players to resume the game.

9) Exceptional circumstances
In exceptional circumstances, other than those of weather, ground or light, the
umpires may decide to suspend or abandon play. Before making such a decision
the unpires shall establish, if the circumstances allow, whether both captains
(the batsmen at the wicket may deputise for their captain) wish to continue in
the prevailing conditions: if so their wishes shall be met.

10) Position of umpires
The umpires shall stand where they can best see any act upon which their
decision may be required.

Subject to this over-riding consideration the umpire at the bowler's end shall
stand where he does not interfere with either the bowler's run up or the
striker's view.

The umpire at the striker's end may elect to stand on the off instead of the leg
side of the pitch, provided he informs the captain of the fielding side and the
striker of his intention to do so.

11) Umpires changing ends
The umpires shall change ends after each side has had one innings

12) Disputes
All disputes shall be determined by the umpires and if they disagree the actual
state of things shall continue.

13) Signals
The following code of signals shall be used by umpires who will wait until a
signal has been answered by a scorer before allowing the game to proceed.

Boundary	by waving the arm from side to side
Boundary 6	by raising both arms above the head
Bye by raising an open hand above the head
Dead ball	by crossing and re-crossing the wrists below the waist
Leg bye by touching a raised knee with the hand
No ball by extending one arm horizontally
Out by raising the index finger above the head
If not out the umpire shall call 'Not out'
Short run	by bending the arm upwards and by touching the nearer shoulder
with the tips of the fingers
Wide by extending both arms horizontally

14) Correctness of scores
The umpires shall be responsible for satisfying themselves on the correctness
of the scores throughout and at the conclusion of the match. See Law 21.6
(Correctness of result)

NB
(a) Attendance of umpires
The umpires should be present on the ground and report to the ground executive
or the equivalent at least 30 minutes before the start of a day's play

(b) Consultation between umpires and scorers
Consultation between umpires and scorers over doubtful points is essential

(c) Fitness of ground
The umpires shall consider the ground as unfit for play when it is so wet or
slippery as to deprive the bowlers of a reasonable foothold, the fieldsmen,
other than the deep-fielders, of the power of free movement, or the batsmen the
ability to play their strokes or to run between the wickets. Play should not
be suspended merely because the grass and the ball are wet and slippery.

(d) Fitness of weather and light
The umpires should only suspend play when they consider that the conditions are
so bad that it is unreasonable or dangerous to continue.

The laws are not reproduced with the permission of the MCC.

I don't know whether this has been mentioned or not but their are actually two
types or formats of cricket, test matches and one day or limited over matches.

An over is 6 balls bowled by one bowler towards one set of stumps. After the
sixth ball a new bowler comes in to bowl to the other set of stumps.

The World Cup consists of one day matches limited to 50 overs or 300 balls. Each
team bats only once and the bowlers are limited to bowling only 10 overs max.
The idea of this type of match is to score runs quickly, taking the singles,
running between the wickets, having a go. One dayers are alot more exciting
than test matches.

One day matches are relativly new to the sport and draw huge crowds here in OZ:
over 95,000 at the MCG.

Test matches last 5 days. Each team bats twice. The runs come alot slower. It's
basically a yawnfest as far as action goes but the underlying strategy and
tactics give a test match it's intrigue.

Some players are better suited for a particular style of cricket. For instance
the World Cup side that Australia is fielding at the moment has 2 or 3 one
day match specialists in the side that don't get a game during a test match,
and vice-versa. Overall greatness in the sport of cricket is still determined
by a players record in test matches however.

CUP NOTES:

It should be a helluva match tomorrow vs England at the SCG. The 'Old Enemy'
as they are known have brought a few supporters so the place should be
rocking. I can assure you that a pommie cricket fan is a little more well
behaved than their soccer fans.

English all-rounder Ian Botham has shot off his mouth as per usual saying " I
can think of nothing sweeter than beating the convicts on their own turf". Ian
has been out of action for awhile, and by the look of him has enjoyed just
a few quiet ales during the winter. I don't think he will get a real warm
reception.

Read in the local rag where an Indian cricket fan hanged himself after India
went down to OZ by 1 run on Sunday. Police in Delhi described him as being in
"total despair and frustration" after the defeat. Big understatement.

see ya,
matt

Interesting situation shaping up today in the battle for the fourth
    spot in the semi finals.

If the West Indies win they are in.

If the West Indies lose and Pakistan wins, Pakistan is in.

If Pakistan loses, Australia must beat the West Indies by 34 runs or
reach the target by the 43 over in order to beat out the West Indies,
by virtue of a better run rate.

The biggest irony is that if NZ beats Pakistan, they must travel to OZ
to play their semi final match. If they lose, they stay in NZ for it.
If Australia scapes in, NZ would play them in Sydney. NZ capitan Martin
Crowe has gone on record as saying that NZ would by giving it their
best shot to win the match. You can bet the Aussies will be crying foul
if Pakistan comes out on top.

Due to other committments, I haven't been able to provide regular
updates on the Cup as I had hoped. I will endeavor to keep ya'll
informed on the remaining games and finals.

    Knipfer is pronounced "nip-fur".

According to a great uncle of mine the name knipfer originated in the

England lost their final match to Zimbabwe in the round-robin series in
the Cricket World Cup by just 9 runs. They were all out for 125. It was
the Zimbabwians first victory of the competition and Englands's second
    loss.

So now I'm confused. What are the matchups for the semis and finals?

=Bob=
243.55Semi MatchupsSNOC01::KNIPFERMCloudy but FineWed Mar 18 1992 23:5215
Thats right, four teams are left after yesterdays results:

    Pakistan bt NZ
    Australia bt West Indies

    Matchups for the semis are:
21 Mar NZ vs Pakistan in Auckland
22 Mar England vs South Africa in Sydney
    25 Mar FINAL in Melbourne

Interesting side note is that Australia, after finishing 5th in the
round robin, was poised to move into the semis if the outcome of the
referendum in South Africa had been a NO vote. It seems that the
South African cricket team would have flown home immediately and taken
no further part in the competition.

A great cricket match on Saturday saw Pakistan defeat NZ by 4 wickets.
NZ batted first and reached a very good total of 262 after their
allotted 50 overs. Pakistan, needing 263 to win, reached 264 with one
over and 4 wickets to spare. This was by far the best match of the
    tourney.

Another great match was marred in controversy as England beat South
Africa in a rain shortened match. South Africa won the toss and put
England in to bat. England reached a total of 252 in 45 overs, thus
reduced because of rain. South Africa looked on target to surpass this
total, trailing by 22 runs with 2.1 overs (13 balls) remaining. The
rains came again and play was halted. When it was resumed 20 min later,
it was determined that SA need 22 runs from just 1 ball...an
impossibility. This has to do with some stupid rule that a one day
cricket match must be finished by a pre-determined time. The SA players
were understandably disappointed and the English players were not
feeling real satisfied either, by what turned out to be a piss-poor
ending to a great game of cricket.

The powers that be have stood by the rules platform for this oneday
tourney and stated that there would be no changes for the final.

So, it England vs Pakistan in the World Cup Cricket final this
    Wednesday at the MCG.

Plenty of fireworks at the Cup dinner last night when English captain
Graham Gooch and star all-rounder Ian 'Beefy' Botham stormed out after
a stand-up comic made jokes about the Royal family and the big
    D-I-V-O-R-C-E.

Breakfast radio had a field day with this, one commenting that the Poms
were suffering from PMT....pre-match-tension. Seems rather hypocritical
of Beefy Botham to call the Australians convicts and then get ticked
off about a royal joke or two. Hell, hasn't he ever seen one of those
    sleezy Fleet St rags?

Not so amusing was a 'joke' made by another MC at a different function
last week when he commented that the brown shoes that Pakistan captain
Imran Kahn was wearing with his tux, matched his face. Imran responded
with typical class that he did not find the remark amusing, but would
let it ride, having considered the source.

Should be a good match tonite at the MCG. Pakistan is on a roll,
England has some injuries. Look for a close match with Pakistan coming
out on top. Expected crowd of over 90,000 will be mostly pro-Pakistan
as the Poms are not exactly the flavor of the moment...at the moment.

I suspect that if the divorce comments were made by another Brit, the reaction

I'll bet that when things get rally nasty on the pitch, they probably throw

I think the thing that us yanks would have trouble with if we tried to bowl
would be that the arm is kept straight. For all of us whose natural throwing
motion is like throwing a baseball, this would be a hard habit to get used to.

There was a cricket bowler who was given a tryout witht he Phillies a few years
back, but he never made it. Supposedly, he could throw up to 90 mph. I would
imagine that if you could work out a wind up/delivery that would be legal in
baseball, you could probably mess up the hitters' timing pretty badly.

Good to see England get stuffed, especially by one of their former Colonies. I
like a lot of things about England, especially English people, but when it comes
to international sport, they are the worst and most condascending, especially
toward the Third World. When England played Cameroon in the World Cup quarter-
finals, the TV camera showed a Cameroon fan wearing a T-shirt signed by all
the Cameroon players. An English commentator expressed genuine astonishment that
the players were literate enough to sign their own names! Join the 20th century,

I got to this topic a little too late, but it was interesting to see
a topic for cricket pop up again in here.. Cricket is in a lot of ways
similar to baseball, but somehow it's very diffcult for someone brought
up with one game to adapt to or enjoy the other.. As far as the rules
go, what JD posted was only a small part of the whole set of rules !
But, to play street/park cricket, you need may be 1% of those rules...
