223.0. "Yo fellas, it's been real!" by CSC32::GL_JOHNSON (Here come the drums) Wed Dec 18 1991 02:54

Seems like these have become all too common over the last year. I'll
try to keep it short and simple.

Friday is my last day here @DEC. I will be going to Orlando, FL, into
the Navy, as of January 6th. Time to leave the parental nest, travel, and
take my career into a more technical direction than it is now. Not to
mention TFSO has become reality in Customer Services and will be implemented
at the CSC in January.

Thanks to all of you for some most enjoyable times here in SPORTS. I got
the chance to meet, and talk with quite a few of you and it was a pleasure.

To Saw, Childs, Hawk, /Don, Doc 00:00, Claybroon, JaKe, Devil Dawg, DiNZ,
JD, and everyone else, I can safely say that watching sports has ceased to be
what it used to be. :-) Who can forget stuff like Hare Smithnas(tm), INHALE(tm),
Yankmes(tm), Gooney-Bird(tm), and all the other wacky, notorious TMs. All
that needs to be said is, 'thaaaankkkks for the memories.' :-) And don't think
it hasn't been a little slice of heaven, cause it hasn't! :-)

Take care guys, and have a safe and joyous Holiday season.

Anchors aweigh, my friend....

Glen, best of luck to you. I will never ever forget a Giantsmania
where this guy calls up on the hotel room phone, telling me he's some
place I've never even heard of. So I say to him, take a cab to the
Meadowlands Days Inn.

I get off the phone, and there's 10 pairs of eyes looking at me like
I'm nuts:

	"Where is he?" they ask.

"Someplace I've never heard of," I replied.

"And you told him to take a CAB to here?!!!"

Then a little later on, Isiah walked into the room 8^)

It's been great. We'll miss you.

If you ever put into New London (at the Sub Base), call me, cause
I ALWAYS have beer in the fridge, and we can joke about Ray "Bozo"

'Saw, the REAL trip wuz gettin back to Yonkers after the
    game.

Earlier, about thetime Childs arrived with the shirts, I
discovered I had less money with me than I started out with.
I had shirt money for Steve Gaulke and Mike JN, but mine, and
and about $50, somehow vanished. Must've fell out of my shoe
where I had it. So all through the rest of that day I'm thinking,
'how the hell am I gonna get home.'

As we were leaving the Mecca, Hawk axed that same question.
With a straight face I told him,

"Ain't nobody gonna mess with me?"

He looked at me for a sec, laughed, then said "Yeah, okay,
they know when you're not from here!"

Soon after, I found my way to Tom Pfau's car and got my jacket
and other things. Said 'see ya' to Childs along the way and went
to call my uncle. Right then I heard an announcement for the
buses leaving for Port Authority, Manhattan. With bus ticket
in hand, I made like Rodney Hampton, ran over to gate D and boarded.

On the bus, there was this old geezer with one foot in the grave,
going on and on about 'boy Noo Yawk suah has changed in the last
50 years.' I sitting there thinking, 'just shaddap old man',
wanting the driver to hurry it up.

We get to Port Authority at about 12:30. All I have on me
are the bus ticket stubs, a few bucks(but not enough for the
Hudson Commuter Line), and 3 tokens. I look up, as if to say
to da man upstairs, 'I'm in your hands now.' I walk down to
the subway platform and this big bro starts looking at my
GIANTSMANIA shirt and GIANTS hat. I start to think 'not
already, let me get on the train first.' I glare back at him
and he says "I'm just reading your shirt man. You went to
the game?" The words "Yeah, Giants won", barely audible in
the noise of the platform, somehow make their way out of my
    mouth.

The train comes and surprisingly, to me, it is almost
packed. I take it to Columbus Circle, where I have to change
trains. Lots of adrenaline flowing by this time. The passageways
between platforms were empty and my hands kept inching up to my
jacket pocket, where my weapon was held. 'Never go in the subway
nekkid', my dad, uncles, and grandfathers always said.

I get on the next train, again full of people, and instead of
going up to 242nd St. in the Bronx, it stops at 168 St. End of
the line. Everyone has to get off and wait for the next train.
By this time, it was about 1:15 or so and I'm beginning to wonder
if I'm gonna get back to Yonkers before dawn, if ever.

We wait for 15 minutes(seemed like an hour) for the #9 train.
Everybody boards and we start moving. We get about halfway thru
a tunnel somewhere between 181 St. and Dyckman St. when the
conductor announces that we'll have to go back to 168th St and
get on the southbound track 'cause there's some track work being
done further on the line. We go back, switch tracks, and move on.

The train pulls into 242nd St. at about 2am. Not being familiar
with da neighborhood and not enough $$ for a cab, I call my uncle
and grandmother. Can't put into words how nervous and worrisome
they were that I had met with foul play.

"Where the hell are you? We were wondering if you got mugged,
shot, or something!," my uncle said.

"I'm down here at the 242nd St. subway station. I'm tired,
broke, and I ain't walking all the way back to Riverdale," I
    said.

By the time I finally got back to Yonkers, it was 2:45am.
Went to church later that morning, then went upstate to New
Paltz to stay with an aunt for a few days. Called Wardle,
let him know I was still alive and in 1 piece.

I did go back on the subway before I came back to Colo.
Hung out in the Village, the Garment District, haggled with
a few street merchants over some hats, ate a Nathans hotdog,
and had a good time. Family thought I was crazy for riding
the subway again, but it was worth it!

Glen --

From the story you just described (which quite honestly had my
testicles in my throat!) tells me that should you ever have to
face combat, it'll be a cinch compared to the subway ride 8^)

BTW, if you were short cash, man, you shoulda said something!
Between the 'Mania brotherhood, we coulda coughed up enough to
get you a plane ticket to Paris....8^)

Best o' luck to you, and I meant what I said. If you're in the
neighborhood (no subways, just lotsa deer, foxes and woodchucks)
please stop by for a beer....

Couldn't do it 'Saw. There I was traveling 2,000 miles
and meeting you guys for the first time. The thought crossed
my mind, but I felt very uncomfortable about it. I just
figured don't worry about it, have a good time, and hopefully,
I'll make it back alright. Which, eventually, I did.

MrT (Silly Him) is correct. BTW, MrT, check out my .1, first line.
*I* had it right 8^)

"Weighing anchor" is the act of pulling up your anchor. The command,
when shouted to the men on the capstans was "Anchors a-weigh"....

I used to know the words to the song, because my dad taught it to me
when I was little.

I don't know the words to The Navy Hymn, nor can I find it in the numerous
hymnals I possess...8^(

One of the coolest books I've ever seen was my fathers "Bluejackets Manual".
It was a very thick book given to Navy guys, with ALL kinds of stuff in
there, from first aid, rescuing overboard sailors, semaphore, seamanship,
morse code, gunnery (small arms AND artillery)... I think I'll dig it
out when I go home for Christmas...

Glen swears he is a Giants fan but I thought he just pulled a
Wardle-vane manuver last season when the the Giants went allthe way.
So it surpirsed me that he stuck with that steadily sinking bunch
througout this season too. I always thought of him as a Raiders
fan first no matter what he might say. So through the years I've
had to dutifully hold his feet to the fire on issues surrounding
Donks/Faids topics. It's been hard on both of us at times
but overall we're probably about even in crow banquets.

In any event, I wish you nothing but the best of luck throughout
your Navy gig. Being an ex-Army chopper jockey, now we'll have
another spectrum to be on opposite ends of. BEAT NAVY! :*)

Got a call from Glenn on Saturday. His 1st impression of boot camp
was, "What the F??k did I do." But, after about 4 or 5 days, he got
used to the idea and says it really isn't so bad. He is a section
leader in a company of screwups. His description of this is that these
guys don't have a clue or don't give a S??t. He is halfway thru & is
starting "Service Week" today. He got the specialty he signed up for
and is looking forward to getting back to the real world. He says it is
hard being cutoff from the outside world though. He didn't get to watch
the Super Bowl & he didn't know Magic was playing in the All-Star game.

I told him I would forward any replies to him. He says that he
hasn't really had time to write because of all the extra duty they have
because of everyone screwing up. He is going to drop me a short note
with his mailing address & I will post it hear.

He says Hi to everyone in Sports & is looking forward to getting

What's up lunatics?!? Well, boot camp is finally over, and
I've been home on 15-day leave, en route to EW(Electronic Warfare
Tech)school in Pensacola, FL for 15 weeks. Thought I'd drop a
    line while here.

All I can say about boot camp is that it was a royal trip,
and I'm glad it's over. For about the first week, all I could
think was 'what the f___ ever made me decide to do this.' :-)
No news, TV, radio, and overall, being treated almost like a
dog, and barely having enough time to relieve oneself. ;-)
To add insult to injury, female squids train in Orlando, and our
CC's(Company Commanders) never let us forget it. Talk about
frustration. The hardest part is fighting off sleep during classes.
I swear I slept for almost 2 days straight once I got home.

One thing that was definetely fun was talking trash about SPORTS.
Lots of guys from Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana, Philly, and about
4 others from Colorado. Everyone swore that since I was from CO,
that automatically made me a Donk fan. I spent half my time
explaining that a)the Donks sip discreetly(tm) and b)the Jints
will be back in '92. ;-) We even had a guy from Buffalo, and he
never heard the end of it once we found out the SB score. I also
proudly upheld the honor of the Big 8, only to have the bums fall
flat on their rumps in the tourney. ;-( Go Broons(tm)! Go Cowboys!

Of course, the mailing address has changed. Once settled, I'll
drop another line to Paul and he'll post it here. Anchors aweigh
