213.0. "Smoky Burgess Autograph" by GRANPA::DFAUST (Don't drink the Koolaid) Wed Nov 20 1991 18:02

I'm looking for a Smoky Burgess autographrd basball and I know he was
fronm the Carolinas. I will be in Columbia, Langley and Greenville, SC
in the next few weeks and was curious if anyone from down south knew of
a shop that may have one in those areas, or know of any shop that might
do a mail order type deal for one of those babies. Since he's dead, I
can't really write to him and ask for one. Any help will be
    appreciated.

Dennis, you might also want to ask your question in the Sports
Memorablia conference that's somewhere on the net. Who knows, someone
might have one for you and get it to you via IO Mail.

Wow, another fan of Smokey Burgess. I remember when we were kids
my brother was real fat and had a crew cut so my dad called him
"Smokey". Stuck for a while, too...

Can't help you on the autographed ball, though. Just last year,
as a gift for my dad, my brother managed to get his hands on a huge
team photo of the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates in front of the bleachers
at Forbes Field that was signed by all the living members at the
team's 30-year reunion in 1990. Smokey was one of those who attended,
but, alas, he died this past summer...

I called around the Pittsburgh area, seeing as Burgess played for the
Bucs in the late '50s and early '60s and the best I could find is a
ball with most of the '60 World Championship team signatures on it for
$175. Nobody here has any with JUST Smodey Burgess' signature on it.
There is another shop here with a ball with the COMPLETE 1960 team's
autographs on it but they want $600 for it.
