165.0. "Bungee Jumping " by CAM::WAY (Toonces, the Rugby Playing Cat....) Fri Jun 21 1991 12:33

Does anyone know if there's any place in the New England area where you
can go bungee jumping? You know a place where you'd go and pay to do it
and they have all the equipment?

Bungee jumping is pretty damn dangerous, isn't it? Much more so than
sky diving or hang gliding or stuff like that, from what I've heard...

A bunch of guys from the team went when they were in New Zealand in 1989.

They said it was the rush of a lifetime, and the most fun they'd ever had.

I'd give it a try if I could find a place...

C'mon, 'Saw, if you're gonna do this, you're gonna have to do it right.

Remember that old National Geographic special showing the tribe of African
natives who do the bungee jumping thing from the top of a tree with the
jungle vines tied around their ankles ???

And how the vines were just the right length so that they'd stop falling
like maybe an inch before the tops of their skulls met solid ground ???

That's what I'd pay to see you do !!!

Bob, you jogged my memory with that story. Remember all them old Tarzan Flicks
where the natives would tie the prisioners legs to the tied down bent over
 trees then cut the ropes?

I think that's what Ralph Malph had in mind when he always used to want to
request a human sacrifice on "You Asked For It".....

kind of makes a wrong snap on a bungie jump seem tame....

The Gorge at the bridge is about 400- 425 down to the river. I've have
seen/watch people (men) try to fish from it... What a riot....
If you go across the bridge take a left and park. Then you can walk down

Well, if the setup for bungee jumping is anything like a rock climbing
harness (and the New Zealand set up was), that's not a problem. About
8 or 9 years ago I went rock climbing a couple of times and feel about
15 feet once. You really don't feel the harness on you when that happens....

I think bungee jumping would be fun....

'Saw,

If you want to do some manly bungee jumping come back out this way. We'll let
yo ujump off of deception Pass. It's where they filmed the reebok commercial
that got pulled off the air. The one where one guy pumps and jumps and the guy
wearing Mikes doesn't and all that's left of the Nike wearer is his shoes.

To my limited knowledge, the western world's version of bungee jumping

While not exactly bungee jumping, officials opened up the 800' bridge
in Virginia for the yearly parachute jump off it. Four people busted
bones, but no one died.

Three people have been killed in the past....

That's West by Gawd Virginia, Saw. It's a bridge over the New River. Ever
since it's been open, people have jumped off it in various and sundry
ways. For a while, they were doing bungee jumping but they outlawed that.
For some reason they let anyone who wanted parachute off of it.

There was a pretty serious breeze blowing which caused a lot of people to
end up in the woods. The gorge there is pretty narrow anyway. At last
count, there were 9 injured, no one critically or fatally.

Caught this on the local station during the morning drive.

A Canadian firm which offers Bungee jumping packages is offering a
promo: Anyone who jumps NUDE jumps for free. They also have made an
agreement with the Canadian gov. where persons accepting the package
will not be procecuted for indecent exposure or any other related
    charge.

Unfortunetly, either the company name wasn't mentioned, or I missed it.

I'd go for it except for ONE thing....

I'm over the weight limit. From what I've heard, and found out
from the local concern, the weight limit is 235. I'm at least two
pounds over that, and perhaps five....

Guess I'll have to confine my activities to Velcro jumping, which
is all the rage in the bars around New Haven...

Actually, I think the situation is not so much that I've
put on weight from eating, but more that I've put on

I'll have to weight until after the spring/summer when I do

Actually, New Haven is a pretty fun party town.

Yale is there, and those kids can party, plus, you're really not
that far from New York, so you do get some of that metropolitan
influence.

The bars are always doing the latest things.

Finally, Toad's Place is there, and Toad's is probably the hottest
bar around because they have concerts there all the time. You're
like five feet away from some great bands. Couple of years back,
they locked the doors around 11:30pm on a Saturday night, and a
band took the stage -- ever hear of a group called the Rolling Stones? 8^)

I'm only about 45 minutes away, but I don't get down there enough to party...

Some of that will come off as the weather warms up, we continue
rugby practice, and I lean out some.

But, I'll still be lifting while this season goes on, so hopefully
by summer I will be at a weight is mostly muscle.

I wanna be BIG. In fact, I'd like to be HUGE. Once I started
seeing some results from the lifting (about 6 weeks it took) I
just got this craving to keep on doing it. I wanna have guns

Last night, the local new carried a clip on bungee-jumping.

It seems that durring a jump, the cord separated. The station
had full TV coverage of the event. (Unfortunetly, I missed the
only time they showed the landing.) Since there was a saftey
air-bag installed under the jump platform, the victom only recieved
a broken ankle. Still, I wonder what his/her reaction was.

Ironically, the day before the local paper had a front page article
on the bungee jumping and locations. One of the topics was how safe
it was.

In addition, the guy and his wife are seriously pissed that the bungee
jumping company wouldn't refund the $100 it cost him to jump!

I'd want my money back too!

My wife and I passed through Hudson, NH, the other weekend.

They were having bungee jumping off a hot-air balloon.

My wife (a nurse) made the following comment:

"Don't these people know what that does to your
brain? The brain gets knocked around inside the
head, kind of like what happens when a person
    		 has a concussion."

Seems kinda stupid to me, too.

I also saw the bungee break on TV. I was relieved to know
that they had an airbag under the jumpers.

I always wondered that about the brain myself. The human brain is
protected by a liquid buffer, but I don't see much of a difference
between a bungee jumper's head jerk and that of a QB right before they
take him off the field with a concussion.

Of course, you've got just the opposite argument if you look at divers
and gymnasts. Their heads are a spinnin' and jerkin' every which way.

I'm not an expert, but I think there is a difference in severity between
a blow to the head (which causes the classic coup-contre-coup action in
a concussion) and the jarring which occurs in a bungee jump.

Can bungee jumping be any worse that pulling 6-9 Gs in a fighter plane?

However, I think it's an interesting question that probably could use
some study.

The human body is pretty tough when you come right down to it. Some things
don't always work so well (like we ought to have evolved a better knee joint!)
but for the most part, it can take what we dish out....

The guy should feel lucky, 'cause appearently he didn't see the 911
episode where the same thing happened to another guy, except he fell to
the parking lot without pads. Snapped his neck if I remember
correctly. He lived, but he wasn't the same upstairs (Veggie like).

This jumping looks like a rush, but I think I would rather go hang
gliding off a cliff 1st, or maybe parachuting.

Speaking of Rescue 911, the first episode they had on last night
was great, about the fire in Manhattan.

The guys from Rescue 1 carried out an incredible rope rescue, and the
men involved were cited by FDNY. I saw the story originally on Investigative
Reports.

Talk about a bunch of brave men.....

A man in Toronto who worked for Adrenalin Rush Adventures was killed
when he hooked up his ankles and took a leap from the bungee jumping
crane. Nobody hooked up the other end of the cord.
