132.0. "Women's Basketball" by SHALOT::MEDVID (at scorer's table for extended blow) Thu Apr 04 1991 15:55

So as not to clutter the NCAA Final Four note, I'll bring this
    potential rathole over here.

Did anyone hear about that new women's professional league? They play
with 8 foot hight rims and smaller (basket)balls to allow for dunking.

Former Hornets coach Dick Harter is the coach of the Detroit team.

132.3Rims proportional to average heightCOGITO::HILLFri Apr 05 1991 12:4412
Yeah, I heard they pro-rated the height of the rims (avg. man = 10 ft,
avg woman's height is .XX of a man's, so the basket would be weighted
    proportionately)

I read something about this league in (I think) the National, and they
tried a couple of experimental games as a preview for next season. I
guess Iowa is a big-time franchise, since there is already a very good
barnstorming womens' team there. Some of the players said it was great
to have a league, but they didn't care for the spandex uniforms, and
preferred "regular" uniforms worn by womens' college teams.

Most of the interviews I've seen with women players or coaches, like
the idea of the Women's League, dislike the idea of different sized
basketballs and lowered nets, and are mixed on the new uniforms. So
far, in my unofficial survey, the cute ones like the sexy uniforms....
the ones who look like Frankenstein after a train wreck do not like the
   sexy uniforms.

   Who would have predicted that?

Actually, I learned more from today's paper. Seems UNCCharlotte
already has last year's Ms. Michigan on the team...and she's from the
same high school in Detroit. Therefore, Markita Aldridge just followed
her friend and former teammate, Angela Barden, here.

Barden was declared ineligable last year because the ACT people
couldn't varify that she had taken the entrance tests. Barden did take
the tests...three times she claims...and a law suit is pending to
    recapture her year of eligibility.

Hey Hawk, give my congrats to Julie! She musta learned that hook shot
    from her Mom, huh?

What's the schedule for her team? I'd like to hit a game or two. I
also want to get to some HHS girls games this year, they should be
    almost unstoppable.

But, with Kerrie playing again, that's my first priority. The NECCO
women are now 8-2, after a win last night over CCRI. There's a home
game tonite so I get to see her play.

Questions:

	1. Did she really get physical and HURT any of the other girls?

	2. Did she whine when she was called for a foul?

	3. When she made the hook shot was her tongue out of her mouth?

	4. Did she drink any Gatorade?

	5. After the game, did she tell everyone in sight she wanted

The NECCO women won last night over Newberry JC, 85-35. Newberry only
had 6 players, and NECCO really plays an uptempo game as well as great
    "D". They wear-out a lot of teams.

They are now 9-2, and are the #2 ranked JC team in New England. Got a
game tonight, then it's semester break, no games until January. They
start play very early because they don't play during the Holiday break.

They have a girl named Tara Holtman, from Salem N.H. She was a walk-on
at UNH and made the team as a freshman. But, she didn't see much
playing time and didn't like the whole scene, so she xfered after her
freshman year. This kid can PLAY! She wasn't recruited because she
spent her HS years in Germany, where her father worked. I'll bet some
Div 2 school recruits her for her next 2 years.

The Hillies start next Tuesday, against Andover. I'm pretty sure I'll
make it, although the Holiday schedule is getting hectic.

The NECCO coach told me that Kerrie is actually too good a passer for
the team. Only 2 other players can handle her passes, as most of the
others just don't anticipate getting the ball unless Kerrie looks
straight at them. If she drives to the hoop, and draws the defender,
she makes the pass to an open teammate. But, more often then not, they
are waiting for a rebound, not a pass. I told her, let them get a few
off of their noses and they'll start to pay attention. :*)

After almost a 2 year break, it's great to see her play again,
regardless of the level. Even tho she's a Sophomore, she's actually
into her 1st year of eligibility. Anyone need a point guard, or a
shooting guard? She nailed 4 3's last night in limited time.

Lee, a VERY happy Dad, 'cause his baby is playing again!

I knocked out 100 competitive disks in June form my customer. The Weds
before Turkey Day the competitor came back and offered to take all 100
drives I sold in trade for 100 of theirs that are twice as big--at no
charge. My hands were tied, as in order to match their capacity I'd
have to sell them $400K worth of additional H/W to attach the disks to
their cluster. I ended up making it REAL painful for the competition
(they lost betw $100-200K on the deal), but it still urinated me, so I
trashed my office, breaking things. I'm a lousy loser.

Way to go, Julie! I know how you feel, Hawk. Kerrie did it against

Well, the girls needed more than good luck. They got whipped by a fine
team, Mitchell which is a JC, I believe, from Rhode Island. Final was
    105-55.

Our team didn't play very well, particularly on defense. But, this
Mitchell team was very, very good. They had 14 players dressed, and
you could hardly tell the difference in the first 10-11. Must have had
at least 6 different girls hitting the trey.

Congrats to Julie Szabo, the OFFEECIAL 1992 Foulshooting Champion.
This is a city-wide contest, held in age brackets.

Quite an accomplishment, Hawk. Must have that great hand-to-eye
coordination good beertenders are known for, huh?

Kerrie won this contest when she was in the 8th grade. Then, she went
to the High School Gym and won the area contest, too. She then went to
the state championship but lost by 1.

Do they still have that format, whereby city champs go head-to-head for
a regional/area title, followed by the state?

Give her my congrats and best wishes for the coming events.

Always the wizeace, eh Needle? :-)

Actually, lEe, Julie won both "city" free throw contests. The 1st one
was the Elks contest and the other one was the K of C contest. The
Elks contest was the more challenging one. She went against 14 other
girls, about 10 of which came clad in their Hunking (middle school)
basketball team uniforms. Intimidating, for sure. If I recall, she
hit 16 of 25. The next round was at NECCO. She had a bad day hitting
only about 5 or 6 of 25, and the winner hit 17. The K of C contest,
which is the one I think you saw in friday's paper, is a bit easy and
much less structured than the Elks contest. The K of C foul line for her
age group is 15" closer to the basket, and the 1st round is only 15
shots. She hit 10 to advance to the Georgetown "districts", where she
hit 17 of 25. This was right after a big game too. We literally
hauled ass out of the gym and just made it in time to Georgetown High
so she could shoot. Next round is in a week, in Wilmington. I think
this is for the Eastern MA title before the "states"(?). The trophies
    are sure piling up!

BTW, her team finished their regular season yesterday on a winning
note. 11-1 on the season, seeded 1st for the playoffs. They done real
good. Julie's been a key, consistent contributor, averaging 7+ points
    per game (team's averaging between 20 & 25 ppg).

Last year, I officiated at the Elks National Hoop Shoot here in
Springfield... This is the contest if you are going to get your kid
into shooting. Very structured and the Elks goes all out to treat the
kids right. If they reach the big one, the Elks picks up the whole tab
for the family. Last year, most of the kids had never been on an
airplane, or had never left their state.

As for the competition, it was stiff in all age brackets and
genders. Two kids hit for perfect 25-25 scores with a bunch of others
hitting 24-25. What was amazing was that one of the perfect scores
came from a small girl. She hit all 25 from behind the actual foul
line and was only 10 years old I believe. Mind you, this is not 25
shots in a row, the shooting is broken down into two 'turns'. One
turn involves shooting 10 and the other involves shooting 15. Each
contestant in their age and gender bracket must wait and watch while
the others in their bracket shoot. Basically, it's pretty
    nerve-racking.

At the National level, if you miss 2, you're pretty much out of the
    competition.

Goose, regarding the 2 turns in the Elks contest, I think I mentioned
it before, but that was the worst part of the competition, not just for
my kid, but for all the kids. My daughter happened to draw the 14th
slot out of 15, so she had to wait a long time before her first turn,
and then again for her 2nd turn. Worst part was that the gym was ice-
cold (it was during the freeze we had in January) and the kids had to
sit basicly motionless through the whole thing (a little over an hour).

    Hawk

132.49SA1794::GUSICJReferees whistle while they work..Tue Mar 03 1992 18:0325

Hawk, sorry to hear about it, but I think that's what makes the
Elks tourney special. Not the ice-cold gym, but the fact that the
25 shots are taken in two groups.

Would it really of mattered if your daughter had drawn the 7th or
8th position? She would still have had to wait through some 15 people
before she shot again, same as if she shot 15th or first. No matter
which slot you get, you still have to wait.

In the long run, I think this is better because it sort-of prevents
one kid from just standing there and banging home 25 in a row. This
way a kid has to shoot twice and I believe in the long run, it will
help them better. I'll admit that there is a lot of pressure, maybe
to much at such a young age, but some kids seem to handle it better
than others. Hey, I was really nervous and all I had to do was rebound
the shots!! So, I can only imagine what the pressue must have been
like for those shooting. One girl lost a battle for first place
because the line official called her for a foot-fault! That was a
really tough break and the kid (girl) was pretty upset crying and all.
It was sad, but they know the rules.

Well, Kerrie gave me some good news last night.

First, she got two A's tis week, one for an essay, one in math.

Second, she made the second-team allstars at point guard. Considering

Well, NECCO won in the semi-finals on Sat, 86-68. Kerrie had 27 points
to lead the scoring for her team. She hit 8 of 9 treys and had another
3-point play on a layup and a foul. The team played great, as just
about everyone contributed as needed. Boards, passes, etc. Great game
    for them.

Unfortunately, they lost in the final on Sunday, 82-60 to Becker
College. Kerrie was covered real good, as any coach would do after
watching Sats game. She hit for 2 of 4 treys, but was hardly ever
open. No one else seemed able to step up and take over. The best
player on the team, Tara Holtman, has been ill over the past week and
just couldn't bring her game along with her. Anyway, they finished as
runners-up in the NJCC Regional tournament. Becker is a very good
club, and will play in two weeks in Troy N.Y. where the National
Tournament for J.C.'s will be held.

Kerrie made the all-tournament team, along with another NECCO player,
Nickie Melanson. I also found out that Kerrie was the assist leader
    for the whole region.

There were a few scouts/coaches there, so MAYBE we'll hear something.
Her passing was outstanding, including a 3/4 inbounds pass. Not bad
for a girl her size. One scout did talk to her a bit. She's still got
3 years eligibility left, so if someone needs a point guard who can hit
from outside, she might get a shot.

The Hillies won on Sat over Medford, so they play Brockton tonite at the
Boston Garden for the Div I North title. The winner of this game goes
to the Centrum on Sat for the state finals. They've already lost to
Brockton by 5, so it's a grudge match for the Hillies as that loss was
their only one this year. But, Brockton is undefeated over the past
two seasons, and are, of course, the defending Div I girls state
champs. So, it will be a battle, I'm sure.

lEe, congrats to Kerrie. 27 points is awesome! Hopefully, some smart
scout puts in a good word. BTW, she is graduating from NECCO this
spring, right? Just found out that my wife will be wearing the cap 'n
gown too. Didn't realize that certificate program "graduates" get to
partake in the ceremonies. Fine with me. Just means yet another
    party!

As lEe mentioned, the rematch of the season between Brockton &
Haverhill is tonight at the Gahden. The winner will probably take the
state title this saturday. I'd have to give Haverhill the slight edge
due to the revenge factor. Even thought Brockton beat them on their
home turf 3 weeks ago, the pressure the community put on these girls
for that game was a bit much. I think they'll fare much better on
neutral ground. What I'd give to see this one tonight, and should
Haverhill win, I'm at the Centrum this saturday...

Just remembered too, that my kid, Julie, will be in the "regional" K of

Kerrie was a bit down after the loss, but I asked her if she had any
regrets, did she wish she had done something differently, or did
something that she didn't try. She said no, she left her game on the

Well, the Haverhill Girls did it last nigght, they beat Brockton,
actually, they creamed Brockton, 62-45, to advance to the state
champeenship this saturday at the Centrum. And, I'm there baby! Wish
I could've seen the game, but bar duties kept me away. At about 11pm
last night, I was getting a bit nervous as I didn't see any
extraordinary activity on the streets, being in downtown Haverhill. A
call to the local newspaper gave me the good news.

BTW, this is the 1st loss in 2 full seasons for the defending state
champs, Brockton. The loss stops their streak at 47, I believe. No
one I talked to all night thought that Haverhill would win, in fact, a
Brockton blowout was the general consensus. I felt otherwise due to
the revenge factor mainly, but unfortunately, being the consumate
professional bartender, I cannot rub it in my customers' faces next
Monday night, as much as I want to... :-)

Congrats to the Hillie Girls BB team! Musta been quite a game. I was
planning on going, but Kerrie's team banquet was last night at
    DiBurros.

As a kinda sad aside, I believe it was 6 girls from the Haverhill team
made the League All-Star team, but could NOT play as the all-star game
was Sunday. They had played the semi-final on Sat, and the final was
on Monday. So, if they had played on Sunday, they wouldn't have been
eligible to practice. If they did both, they would have been declared
ineligible for the rest of the year. Which is, the finals. That damn
MIAA sure has some screwballs running things. Didn't anyone think that
at least a few girls from whatever team was going to the Finals would
make her allstar team? Heck, it isn't like it's a real game, it's just
time for them to strut their stuff. But, the almighty MIAA rules
    again.

Is that right, lEe? What a bunch of maroons, for that rule and
especially for scheduling the all-star game right in the middle of the
    playoffs...

I read the recap of the game in the Globe, and apparently, the game was
still very much in doubt until about 6 minutes to go. Haverhill went
into halftime with a 10 point lead, but Brockton charged back to tie it
in the 2nd half. It then stayed close until, I believe, Brockton's
center, considered their main offensive threat, picked up her 4th foul
with 6 minutes left. The Brockton coach decided to sit her, and then
Haverhill went on 2 huge spurts within minutes to ice the game.

I feel that the loss to Brockton a few weeks ago was a blessing in
disguise for Haverhill. Sure, it was tough to take after the
outrageous "showdown" build-up, but revenge must've weighed heavy on
the minds of these girls. I've seen them play, and they are a tough
and scrappy bunch. No way was Brockton going to beat them again.

Also, for at least a couple of the Haverhill girls, this will be their
2nd title attempt. The last time they were in the championship game,
and won, was in '89. A certain noter, known as ::sports's elderly
statesman (ie. old phart), watched his daughter Kerrie Timmons help
lead the team to the '89 champeenship. Here's hoping for another...

The intent of the MIAA rule is to stop STUDENT-Athletes from spending
all their time on sports. The rule is there to stop kids from playing
on more than one team at a time (High school or junior high hockey team
and then playing later that evening for the town travelling youth
hockey team for example). As far as the All Star game, it was
scheduled by the League NOT by the MIAA.

I agree that the MIAA does alot of stupid things and deserves much
of the critisism it gets, but in this case the League's Athletic
Directors (including Haverhills) are the one who messed up.

dave, I agree with you as you describe the INTENT of the rule. No
problem there for me. But, there should be some means to obtain an
waiver under certain conditions, such as an all-star game game and a
practice on the one day between a semi-final and a final tournament
    game.

The MIAA has a lot of things that are a problem, buginning with the way
they use the money they collect. I recall, in general, a major blow-up
a few years ago regarding their headquarters and the money spent to
either build or renovate it. The new rule this year, which does away
with a home game in the tournament for the top-seeded teams stinks,
too. Hopefully, it will revert back to the way it was.

Stopped by the Haverhill High Athletic office this morning to pick up
my discounted tickets (3) for Saturday's big game. Saved a total of
$6, which coincidentally was the cost of a Fenway bleacher ticket last
year. :-) Problem is, where do I put them so they'll be found in 3
days? I'd leave them in the car I'm driving today, but the last time I
did that, my wife switched cars with me on game day and I almost didn't
    get there, right 'Sawmain?

I also mentioned to the AD about how these girls would matchup with
Notre Dame, and he said #1, the MIAA would never allow it and, #2, it
would be no contest. I realize his opinion is very biased, but he also
pointed out that the talent disparity between Div's I & III is just
too great. I'm not so sure I'd agree with that, but I also just can't
see anyone beating the Haverhill girls right now (assuming they're not
having an off game, which happens to the best of them).

Anyone know if they're going to the Centrum on Saturday? I'll probably
get there a little after 4 to catch most of the Div II Boys game, and
most likely leave sometime in the 2nd half, depending on the game
itself, of the Div I Boys, the last game of the day...

Hawk,

Do you have a bulletin board at your house, say, in your kitchen?
Do you have refrigerator magnets?

If so, make up a big sign in big black (or red, or international orange)
letters, which says:

HEY STUPID, THE GOSH DARNED FREAKING TICKETS ARE
		RIGHT HERE ------->

and then pin or magnet the tickets right there...

Then go into your living room, and make a big sign, in GREEN letters,
which says

THIS WAY TO THE TICKETS ---->

and make the arrow point towards the kitchen. Do the same in the
bathroom, and the other rooms, except the bedroom.

In the bedroom, have your lovely wife make a sign, in big RED letters
that says:

HAWK, IF YOU LOSE THE TICKETS (WHICH ARE TACKED
ON THE REFRIGERATOR [or whereever]) IF YOU LOSE
THOSE TICKETS, THERE WILL BE NO NOOKIE FOR A YEAR!

Lastly, in the refrigerator, put a little post it on a beer that says

Hey, You, Stupid, the tickets are (location)

Finally, tell Steven and Julie that it's worth $10 to each of them if they
remind you at least five times a day where the tickets are.....

That should do it.....

Hope this helps,

The real problem with a game between a Division 1 team and a Division 3
game is depth. A public school hockey coach said their top 2 lines and
defense pairings match up well with any Catholic school but where they
get killed is on the 3rd line. And it goes that way, all the way down
    the chain.

I've never seen either Haverhill or Notre Dame play. What the MIAA is
looking at (regardless of what level of talent Notre Dame actually has)
    is the supposition that Haverhill's 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th players
could probably start for Notre Dame while Notre Dame's starters might
have a problem playing for Haverhill. It's the same problem we used to
have in the UMass vs BC football game - their 3rd string could have
started for us or pushed our starters while most of our starters
probably couldn't have started for them.

In high school sports, the bigger the school, the more talent you have
to choose from and the higher the likelihood of finding better players.
In football, if you have Brockton playing Maynard, Maynard is probably
going to have to leave its starters in for most of the game, they'll
get tired and there's a likelihood of them really getting hurt by
    Brockton's fresh second team.

In order to avoid lawsuits, the MIAA has to set a standard and stick to
it. Some of the rules may seem silly but they have to try to remain
consistent, lest they get accused of violating their own rules and
acting with a sense of favoritism.

JohnD, I can't say for sure about this year, but I do know that within
the past 6 years, the MIAA has not released their tournament schedule
until the season was over. Yet, the AD's have to have their all-star
game scheduled early enough so that the players from many schools can
plan on it, and that it NOT interfere with the next sport, such as
    softball coming right after basketball.

Why did the MIAA see fit to schedule a Final only two days after the
semi, yet have FIVE days until the State Final? Maybe it was because
of the Boston Garden schedule, but nothing is said. If it was, then so
be it. I think a kid would rather play in the Garden than in an
allstar game at a high school. But no info has been issued, that I've
    seen.

Why did the Haverhill Andover game have to be played In Salem Mass?
Six years ago, the big game between Haverhill and Methuen was held at
Merrimack College, a close site which was neutral for both teams. Made
for a good crowd. Perhaps the crowd was as good at Salem, but I doubt
    it.

It isn't like they don't know when the season ends. There is a final
date that all schools must adhere to. And, since it's an open
tournament, it isn't necessary to wait until the last game is played to
determine who qualifies, like the older format. Sure, the seedings may
change late in the season, but that's no more a problem than they used
    to have with the qualifications.

Oh well, enough is enough. Should be a great day in the Centrum.

It's been a while since I last updated on my daughter's hoops season,
    so....

The Sacred Hearts Hawks finished their regular season in the River
Valley League with a 11-1 record, capturing their division
championship. Last weekend, they won back-to-back games in the playoff
tournament to advance to the championship game this past Saturday
against the other division's regular season champs who had not lost a
single game all season. Emulating the Haverhill High School girls
state championship team (who won it a week ago), Julie and her
teammates came onto to the floor all wearing bandana headbands. And, in
similar fashion to the HHS girls in their championship game, the Hawks
played a sloppy game and found themselves down by 4 going into the last
period. The fear of losing it sunk in as they went on a tear in the
closing minutes to win 15-11 (yes, that's the correct score!). Julie
did not score in this game, but she played well defensively as she
    guarded their top scorer.

On another note, Julie won the 3rd round (regionals) in the Knights of
Columbus Free Throw contest last week and advances to the final round
for the state champioship in a couple of weeks...

Last Saturday was the state champoinship of the Knights of Columbus

(North) region champ, and she faced 4 other regional champs (Boston,
South, Central, & West). Although she hit her personal best, 18 of 25,
she only managed a 4th place finish. The winner hit for 20, and 2
other girls tied at 19. I couldn't have been prouder had she won
though. She took consolation in bettering herself, and recognized the
champ in a sports(wo)manlike manner. She's also pretty proud about
being the 4th best 11 year old girl (K of C) free throw shooter in the
