127.0. "Special Olympics" by CARROL::LEFEBVRE (Rather be trout hunting) Wed Mar 27 1991 14:51

Has anyone in here participated in any of the Special Olympics that
take place across the country every year?

The 1991 New Hampshire Special Olympics are being held June 14-16 at
UNH (Durham) and the Seacoast Area preliminaries are being held May
19th at the Portmouth HS Athletic Complex.

It's my understanding that volunteering for the SO is a very rewarding
and humbling experience. Anyone care to share their experiences?

    Mark,

I've been a volunteer for 12 of the last 14 years and it is truly one
of the most humbling and rewarding experiences of my lifetime. If you
have the chance to do this, by all means do... You will be amazed with
the outpouring of pure love that these kids have for themselves, their
fellow athletes and the volunteers. It's a truly rewarding experience.

One of the greatest moments that I saw during the competition is a
boy who was clearly leading the race notice that an older girl had
fallen behind him. He stopped, went back and helped her up and they
finished in last place together. But from the smiles on their faces
you'd never would have known that they finished last....

I've worked in almost every job imaginable and have loved them all.

    Mark,

I've been volunteering for the Special Olympics for quite a few years
now. It's a great experience. If you really want to put things in
perspective, it can't be beat. And these folks are great! You can
learn from them, and they can learn from you.

If you have a chance to do it - do it. You'll never regret it.

Last year at Fort Lewis out here in Washington I had some great
    experiences.

Good to hear from someone who is involved in this.

Please don't shout. All caps in notes is shouting. Try to use
lower case it is much easier on the eyes.
