    Wot?! Not Broons note?!

With the playoffs fast approaching, it's nigh time we dedicate a note
for all you closet Broons fans.

JD, Claybroon, Jesse, et al...have at it.

Lemelin kept the Broons in the game last night. While trailing 3-1 to
the Nords, Lemelin was peppered with shots and he made some great
saves. Another Quebec goal at that point would have put it out of
    reach for Boston.

The Broons' defense had better shore up before the playoffs.

So...

Are the Broons going to expend all their energy trying to win the division again
this year only to fall short in the playoffs again ?

At least they'll be able to hang another useless division banner in the rafters
of the garden. Or do they only hang conference banners ?

Go Brooons. I can get them once in awhile on HTS, a DC based sports
network, when they play the Islanders or Capitals.

Ken Hodge Jr really impresses me. So does Gary Doak Jr, Don Awry Jr and
    Phil Esposito Jr.

They will be tough and will most likely win their conference but St
Louis, Chicago, LA and Calgary look tough from out west. And never
    count the Oilers out.

    Not this year, no, Dan.

The most deserving player for any award is Ray Bourque for the Norris
Trophy as best defenseman. He's had nowhere near the season he had
last year in terms of having a shot at the Hart Trophy for MVP. He's
not even necessarily a lock for the Norris either, and may well win it
on default or on past reputation. Ken Hodge is a remote shot for
Rookie of the Year but probably won't get it. Chris Nilan is and
always has been a Lady Byng Candidate and Cam Neely deserves an award
for either Leading Teenage Heartthrob or leading scorer among NHL
Goons. The team won't win the trophy for fewest goals allowed, neither
goalie is in the top echelon of goalies in the league, the team won't
win the best overall record award and probably won't win the Stanley
Cup either, due to lack of overall scoring punch. Craig Janney will
win the Wuss Trophy and the team overall will win the Johnson and
    Johnson Award for most injuries.

Dan, if you walk down memory lane (I know the 'ludes didn't cause too
much permanent damage), you'll recall that I was miffed about Bourque,
    and only Bourque.

This year, Hull and Gretzky have both had better years, and I'd wager
that Neely is more valuable to the Broons this year than Bourque.

However, Hodge should be up in the voting for ROY.

Actually, Moog is in the top 5 in GAA.

Bourque is in the running for the Norris, and Hodge for ROY. Has
anyone seen Coffey's +/- stats? Something like -29 for a first place
    team.

I just read that the Whale renewed Eddie J's contract until '95 or so.
If the Whale should happen to upset the B's will Ley be allowed to stay
    on?

And PLEASE, would someone throw a little arsenic in Jim Weimer's next

Rocket Richard. So he has a hard shot, BFD. He's a stiff!

Tidbits for tonight's opening game matchup between the Broons and les
    Habs.

    - Bobby Carpenter is out for the rest of the playoffs as doctor's
report that he has re-fractured his knee. Why he skated in Game 2
against the Whale is beyond me.

    - Jeff Lazaro is questionable due to a hyperextended knee from Game 6
against the Whale. Wes Walz will likely fill his skates on a 4th line.

    - Milbury will likely send out the following lines: Razcizka, Neely,
Janney; Skriko, Poulin, Christian; Sweeney, Hodge, Burridge; Markwhart,
Walz, Nilan. Defense: Wesley, Bourque, Sweeney, Galley, Weimer,
    Pederson.

    - Moog, of course will be between the pipes.

Les Ogres did a great impression of a rugby scrum in the last two
minutes! Whaddya think 'Saw? I'm surprised the trainer and water boy
weren't trying to pigpile Moog. In the future something's gotta be done
about the crease activity. I'm not saying this because the Broons were
on the receiving end either. If they were down to the Habs, the Bruins
would have tried to jampile Roy also. If the refs don't crack down on
the goonism in the crease, the goalies will take it upon themselves
( ala Cheevers,Billy Smith, Hextall) Cain't say I would blame them
    either.

Game 1 of the series, which would normally be on NESN, will be on

there would be a conflict with ESPN so the Sox will be on NESN instead.

ABsolutely intense, wonderful game. I couldn't believe it when Les
Habs pulled Roy with, what, 2 1/2 minutes left and put out 6 forwards.
And those guys then managed to fend off at least 2 direct shots on
goal. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like that lone
player standing in the net and deflecting the shot.

There were a ton of uncalled penalties on both sides, but that's kind
of "to be expected" under the circumstances.

The Penquins/Bruins series should be a good one. If you ask me to list
the usual thorns in the Birds' side, it would go like this:

    	1. Phillie
    	2. NJ
    	3. Boston

Pittsburgh has had a tough time with Boston over the years. And
watching a Pens and Broons game is always tough until you get a mindset
on which black and gold clad team is at home.

I think the Bruins should win, but a Penquin vs Northstar Cup Series

Pen's original colors were azure and white (and I think a bit of
black). It's really strange to see old highlights. They switched to
black and gold in '79 to match the Pirates and the Steelers. Except
for the insignia, the Bruins and Penguins uniforms are exactly the
same...as far as I can tell.

There was some controversey when the Penguins switched. The Bruins
claimed to "own" those colors. I like the Pens in black and gold only
because they match Pittsburgh's other sports teams (including the
now-defunct indoor soccer team, Spirit), but I hate that they look

A simple solution to the sameness of the Pens and Bruins uniforms would
be for the Bruins to revert to their sweaters from the late 60's. You
know, the ones with the gold and white shoulders. Always liked those
jerseys and never figured out why they put those stupid little bears on

Joann, I know that a bruin is a baby bear. Same as a "Cub". It looks
stupid. I recall back in the 70's there was a minor league team that
played in the Yarmouth Coloseum on the Cape. They were called the Cape
Cod Cubs. They had that silly little bear on their shoulders, too.

Anybody remember that symbol at gas stations from years ago? I think it
was for tires. The symbol was a bear with the same silly grin the bear
    on the Bruin jerseys has.

They had O'Reilly and Freddy O'Donnel and a kid named Richie Leduc. And
Steve is right...they used to pack the Garden. Saw 'em play the

Remember the Pens uniforms when they used to be BLUE? It wasn't until
the Pirates and Steelers won in the same year taht they changed to
Black & Gold. I think for a while they were waering gold at home, and
they even did the same as the B's with the gold sox withthe away
    uniform.

Hard to believe the interest in hockey from the 70's. The Whalers were
also Boston based, playing in the gahden and at Northeastern's Matthews

Any comments on the film of that Broons' fan taking a poke at Steve
    Yzerman this past weekend?

Not only does the film prove this fan to be a pathological liar
in addition to being a low-life scumbag (which we pretty much knew
already), but what does it say for Harry Sinden? Sinden stated
emphatically, without question, that from his perch in the Garden
boxes that Yzerman and the Detroit coach initiated the fracas.
Would good ol' Harry be beneath telling a giant fib to get an
opposing coach and player into trouble with the league?

Maybe I can understand the occasional obnoxious fan behavior (it
can happen anywhere, although fights between fans and players seem
to be the solely the domain of the NHL), but NHL management's
response to such behavior is strictly WWF in nature. When a home
team fan physically assaults an opposing player and management
rushes to cast aspersions at the player, what can the message be to
the fans but to come on down to the hockey game and mix it up with
    the big boys?

Well, at least the fan admitted it, even belatedly.

There was a major brawl at the Civic Center back in the WHA days.
I was at the game.

It was between Cincinnati Stingers and the fans. As they were leaving,
a fan poured a beer on the head of one of the Stinger's goons. He
climbed into the stands. Unfortunately, the goon (Schmedmo or some name
like that) picked the wrong fan to fight with -- not the beer thrower.

The fan tried to defend himself, and Thommy Abrahamsson, who was injured
and in the stands tried to intercede. The brilliant Hartford Cop got
there and handcuffed the fan, while Schmedmo is still flailing away
at the guy's face....

The beer thrower got away scot-free....

The Garden should do what the Civic Center does: have a moveable canopy
to pull over the runway. It prevents stuff like that.....

    First of all:

REK knows nuthin' about hockey....he's proved that to me time in and
    time out.

    Second:

Just because one bozo decides to behave in an inappropriate manner, it
does not mean that all fans behave in the same fashion. (Kind of like
the Patriots & Red Sox scandals...a few bad apples, next thing you know
you have that old stereotype thing going. Its unfair to those of us who
know how to behave in public places)

    Lastly:

If Yzerman had hit the fan first, then I would say Yzerman is at fault.
Since it was the fan who had hit Yzerman, I think the fan is the one at
fault. I hope that Yzerman prosecutes to the fullest extent of the
law. Incidents of this nature give bad publicity to sports fans.

    MikeL,

Boy, have you hit the nail right on the head. As a Bruins fan
(yes, I still ADMIT it), I'm appalled that a fan would treat a player in
such a poor manner....I would hope that the Bruins would never have to
endure the same type of thing that Yzerman went through.

As for the goonism and fighting, I blame the NHL's president, John Ziegler,
and the inconsistent calls of the refs. If a player feels that the chance
to commit a penalty and get away with it is there, then he'll try it. The
other piece of it is I know people who do not watch hockey and still make
comments in reference to the fighting. (i.e., they still think that's all
that happens at hockey games) Its this kind of ignorance and bias that
hurts (and will continue to hurt) the game. Why these people think this
is easy: the media. Seems that all the stations want to show are clips
of fights, its no wonder that people think its the only thing that goes
on in the game. Its not just a set of rules that the NHL has to adjust,
its also the mindsets of many people.

Surprised to see no mention about the bizzare play at the end of the

Boston late in the third period; Quebec had pulled their goalie. A

Quebec goal with just a lone Nordique defensemen back there...and then
someone on the Quebec bench threw a glove at one of the Bruins to try
and stop him!! (Lousy shot, he missed by a mile.) I couldn't
believe what I was seeing! Boston was awarded a penalty shot as a
    result...unreal...

Providence might be a logical choice. I remember going to see the old

I haven't heard of anything official, Denny. It's just that I remember
when the Centrum opened they were talking about in order to keep a
facility like that afloat, they can't depend only on concerts and truck
pulls. Regular tenants like an AHL team would really help. They were
looking into it, but the proximity to Springfield, Boston, and Hartford
probably hurt. There was also the problem of a small rink (which I
think has since been fixed along with the improvements done to
guarantee them the NCCA basketball bid). There also didn't seem to be
alot of interest over the past few years in an AHL expansion. If the
Mariners are indeed looking for a new home, I'm sure the Centrum would
welcome them with open arms. Being the Bruin's farm team I'm sure
    there'd be instant fan support.
126.178DCOPST::POOLQ::BRAKEWed Apr 29 1992 19:5320
Actually, AHL teams do well if they can draw about 7K-8K a game. And,
believe me, ticlet prices won't be $3 a pop either. I wonder if
Providence or Worcester could guarantee getting 8K in the stands every
game. THAT is where the proximity to Hartford and Boston hurt.

Worcester has a big enough metro area where Springfield wouldn't hurt
at all. But, mind you, the parent club does not pick up the tab for
all the salaries of all the players on an AHL roster. And, the AHL team
must pay the facility costs. Are there pockets of money willing to
invest in a shaky venture in Worcester today?

Problem is, you have pretty good high school hockey in greater
Worcester at a very low cost to the fan. Then you have the college game
just a few miles away in Boston. Plus you have a lot of folks who have
paid money to NESN or SC or both to watch the Bruins and Whalers. Can
the Worcester area count on 8,000-10,000 people to plunk down $10-$12
for each home game to see minor league hockey?

Well, so I was wrong.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see any of the game last night (probably just
as well). I did hear a snatch of it on 1440 AM as I left the gym, but as I
headed WEST into Glastonbury, a more local 1440AM stomped on it with the
Yankees game (of all things!).

I look at the Bruins and see a ton of potential there. I think they can
take it in 7, but even if they don't, there's a lot of good things to
look at for next season.

First, you've got guys like Juneau, Murphy, Heinz on the squad. As they
mature, you gonna see big things from them. Adam Oates and Rosie have
filled in a lot of gaps -- big gaps -- left because Cam Neely isn't there.

So, even if this ins't their year, the next couple are looking awfully good
from here.

As to the Whale, they are actually cutting their own throats with this
playoff performance. Now the fans are saying "Okay, why didn't they play
like this during the regular season?"

Don't like the dearth of Bruins coverage in the Hartford papers....

cause the regular season don't mean squat anyways. If it did both, them and
the DEBILS would have been swept....proof you don't have to bust them all
year long to have a meaningful season.

126.189RUGBY1::wayAt 6', 245, from Parts UnknownThu Apr 30 1992 14:3116
Agreed Mike, except one thing. The regular season does mean squat to the
owners, and the Civic Center.

I think a lot of the Civic Center revenue at this time of year depends on
the Whalers. Nights that are reserved for hockey games with a paltry
5K-8K attendance, could be sold out for concerts booked were there no hockey.

When attendance is down, the Civic Center doesn't get as much in their cut.

However, in hockey terms, you are truly right -- especially when a fourth
place team with the 3rd worst record in hockey can have a chance to knock
off a division winner....

'Saw
126.190CNTROL::CHILDSVanilla Trainwreck-What a Band!Thu Apr 30 1992 15:1515
I was thinking about that Saw but they really aren't that many bands who
could fill the joint. Of those that could not all of them are on tour at
the same times. Even if they were like the sportsfan how many dollars
could concertgoers spend in a week going to concerts drug pushers exclude
 naturally?

Sure busting hump during the year might bring in a couple of K more fans
a week but then if they bust in the playoffs it's a catch 22. If you do
better in the playoffs you build hope for next year. Besides most of those
Huskies' fans have hard enough time remeber all the refs in the Big East
on a first name basis, how da heil they going to do that in the NHL? They'll
 need cheatsheats...

Mike, you got a point, but that's the basis of what the Civic Center
has been saying.

The number one act at the Civic Center is the Whalers. If they don't draw
well, the Civic Center loses money....

Personally, I'd like to see just the playoffs. Draw the name out of the hat
in October, and then do the playoffs like they do now.

The difference between 2K-4K less per 40 home games at $30.00
a ticket is pretty significant. The owners could make the regular
season meaningful if they eliminated the fourth place team and gave
the division champ a bye, but they're all in this to make money

I'm just rekindling the Broons flame that has lived inside for years.

I made a tragic and dire mistake in 1979 when I was loyal to the local
team -- a team of decent players (in some years) with buffoon-like
management.

Recently I saw the error of my ways, and like the Prodigal Son in the
Bible, I returned home to the fold.

The Whalers, despite their lucky performance in the playoffs, are a hurting
organization.....

Mom hates the Whalers as much as I do. She's been pulling for the Canadiens,
except she hates Patrick Rooo-Wah. 8^)

And I found out that my brother is actually a Pittsburgh Penguins fan

Francis.

Now, I don't have my mask tonight, but I do have the start of my
"playoff beard".....

As to deleting the Whalers conference, I suppose I can do that at some
point. Just haven't gotten around to it. Haven't noted in there in
months (or at all this season).....

My 7th grade science teacher, Rick Niedbala (pronounced Nibla) is responsible
for me being a rabid Broons fan most of my life. I was a Broons fan
earlier than 7th grade, when they won the cup, but he was just outta
college, had long hair and a fu-manchu, and he taught science in
hockey metaphors.

Every Friday, our week's review of the work we had covered was done
as a quiz game, and the winning team would always get free ice cream from the
cafe. All of the teams had names based on the team Captain, except the
Bruins. You got on the Bruins if you had one of the four highest averages
in the class. Since I had the highest average I was a Broon every
friday.... We won a lot, lost a few, and had a GREAT time.

The room was decorated with Bruins posters -- Bobby Orr flying through the
air, a team poster, and during the seasons, the previous days standings
were posted on the bulletin board every day.

7th Grade Science, along with 8th Grade US History, and Shakespeare in
senior year were my favorite courses in all of school....

Roo-wah is NOT without his weaknesses. Derek outlined them on the
broadcast last night, and they were weaknesses that the Whalers
sought to exploit -- and did a fair job of.

Go high on Roo-wah, he'll go down early and give up the top corners.
Catch him off guard. Be relentless with him.

He is a great goalie, but like Goliath, he does have his weaknesses.

GREAT job by the B's in taking the body, and great job in not retaliating
when the Habs got chippy.....

Yes, I've noticed that. Never mind the fact that Andy Moog kept them
in the game, or that Joe Juneau was doing his Terminator impression:

"He doesn't feel pain, he doesn't feel pity, he doesn't know
fear and he WILL NOT STOP until he's scored a goal!"

Nothing against Douris. I mean, in a Stanley Cup OT game, you KNOW that
the guy who scores the winning goal is gonna be PoTG. And Douris DID
redirect the puck slightly with his stick.

But in your typical game, Dickstah Rooney, you are RIGHT, SIR!

can have your own collection of Rene's favorite anthemns ( American,
Canadian, Russian, God Bless America, Finucula Finiculi, etc.) at

My main objections to Rene Rancourt are:

o He sings TOO slowly. National Anthems are patriotic
	  songs -- not dirges.

o His vibrato is so wide he tends to sound off-key. This
is similar to the late Ethel Merman, who had a tremendously
	  wide vibrato.

Other than that, he's, well, uh, er, uh, um, interesting....

That's the price I was quoted in the Whaler's gift shop for an
authentic game version, with the straps inside for the pads.

The "regular" ones in the gift shop were $70, I think.

The guy tried to tell me that the only difference is the straps for the
pads. Well, I've never seen any straps that go for $55. I think the
regular ones are a much lighter material, and the game versions are a
little heavier...I think....

Yup, there are too levels of game sweaters. The lightweight kind are
not the real and true authentic item that an NHL player would wear
(sort of the equivalent of an adjustable baseball hat). My Blackhawks
sweater is that kind and it cost me around $70. The heavyweight kind
are exact replicas of what an NHL player would wear. It's a heavier
material and it does have all the straps and other paraphernalia in
there. Depending on the team, it goes for $100-150. To use hat
terminology, buying one of these is like buying a fitted, wool baseball
cap instead of the adjustable kind.

    John

PS - Rancourt actually signs the anthems a bit more quickly than most
of his counterparts. No one beat John Kiley on the organ, though. He

Mike, I think my statement was misleading.

I don't particularly LIKE Fred and Derek (in fact, I think Peckham and
Cheevers are better) but my ONLY source of Broons news is Fred and Derek.

In between times they talk about Broons players, where on SC you hear
about Whalers players (which if I'm interested in I can read in da paper).

So, it's the content more than the personalities.

I can only IMAGINE what Derek said when that Whaler tomahawked that Broon
on the break on the Whalers goal....

Lasted night was the first B's game I've seen since the opener, and I
was very impressed with the quick passing attack which hasn't been seen
in these parts since the great-ape ancestors of modern-day man lost
their tails and evolved into hockey players. Good to see their offense
averaging over 5 goals a game, although they still don't have a chance
in a shootout against teams like the Pens.

Bruins got slapped by the Buffalo Blades lasted night 7-2. They took a
beating physically too, with Adam Oates and Joe Juneau both getting hammered
with 'questionable' hits (READ: cheap shots).

But it was good to see Bob Sweeney finally playing up to his potential -
0 goals 0 assists 4 minutes in penalties.

The hit on Oates was a classic hit, totally clean. He was caught with
his head down, and paid the price. I wish more people would hit like
that, what he recieved was a good old fashioned shoulder to the solar
    plexis.

He was dazed for the remainder of the game.

    -TH
126.271AXIS::CHAPPELCalling Dr.Howard,Dr.Fine,Dr.HowardThu Nov 12 1992 14:1012
TH, the reason I classified the hit on Oates as questionable was because
Wood hit him from behind. If the hit would have been from the side, or
straight-on, I would agree that it was a "classic hit".

I don't think there is any question that Bodger's hit on Juneau was, "of
the cheap variety" as Derek would say.

It'll be interesting to see if the B's can bounce back tonight against a
very good (11-5-2) Calgary team, especially with Lemelin scheduled to be in
goal.

Chap, Are you talking about the hit when I think Wood came out of the
PB ? That was straight on, and he nailed him. Nothing chaep about that.
I missed the Juneau hit. Quite sad when you team gets blasted by
the Sabres in the Aud, and there is no one on the B's to Smack anyone
around. (Hughes maybe, Bank definetly not)

The Sabres are hot in their building, Lafontaine is a one man show.

    -TH
126.273AXIS::CHAPPELCalling Dr.Howard,Dr.Fine,Dr.HowardThu Nov 12 1992 17:4515
-TH, I didn't actually see the hit on Oates, I was switching between the
Bruins game and the Celtics game. I was going by what the announcers were
saying about it. That Wood "blind-sided" Oates, I took that to mean he hit
Oates from behind. But after reading the game report in the Globe, it may
have been more of a case of catching Oates with his head down. In which
case I would agree with you, it was a good clean hit, and not a cheap shot.

Also true is the fact that the B's don't have a true enforcer. Banks is
suppose to play the role, but I haven't seen it yet. Further more, I have
yet to see him win a fight.

These are not the Big Bad Bruins of old. Where's Johnnie MacKenzie when
we need him. :-)

Chap

    Chap,

Agreed Banks is a true stiff all around, can't skate, can't shoot,
can't score. He's big, ~ 6'3" but fast as an upsidedown catsup bottle
on a cold day. I had an ear to ear grin when Oates got popped, not
wishing he was hurt or anything, but it was a great hit. It had all the
elements of producing a woodie. Forward comming through the neutral
zone, picks up pass in his skates and looks down while crossing the red
line. Whats this ? Randy Wood's penalty was up and he's comes out of
the box, tucks his shoulder and Oates was toast. Good and clean, no
running steps, or hitting from behind.

Seldom is a hit like that even used anymore, let alone seen. Oates was
clearly dazed, but it was'nt life threatning. A whack of a smelling
salt and 40 minutes of pine riding. He'll be fine.

That's the great thing about hockey, offense can hit offense, anywhere
on the playing surface. Put your head down, and it's could be
    disasterous....

-TH I finally saw the hit on Oates. Absolutely a clean hit, as a matter of
fact, probably one of the best I've ever seen. No wonder Oates was "dazed

Reggie is still a very good goalie, barring injury he could still play
for a few more years. This is of course if he gets a defense in front

I am very disappointed. I figured by the time I got in all the early bird
noters would have already written odes to the human spirit. Poems that
praised the improbable; prose that glorified a team that could
come back from what appeared a hopeless situation with thier 2 star
players out of action. But I guess people here are to biased to
appreciate such things when it happens against the Bruins.

For the uninformed: Bruins led the Rangers 5-2 with 6 and 1/2 minutes
left in the game. Rangers scored 4 goals (last one with 35.9 seconds left)
to beat the Bruins 6-5.

Don't much matter. 1000 fans in Winnipeg aren't going to get hockey a
decent TV contract. Hey, hockey can be wherever it wants to be; it's
totally their decision. If the future of hockey is higher and higher
