120.1A tiger fan since BradleyPENSAR::LAZARUSDavid Lazarus @KYO,323-4353Fri Mar 15 1991 18:576
    I've been a Tiger fan since the first NCAA tournament I remember
    1964-5,when they went to the final 4 led by a US senator. They were
    great in the late 60's and 70's with players like Geoff Petrie and
    Brian Taylor.

    I hope they get a chance at North Carolina!
120.2Hope I'll see them SundayDELNI::HALLFri Mar 15 1991 19:3325
    Dave,

    When I was a freshman at Tigertown way back in '71, Taylor led the team
    to a *16-point* win over North Carolina, when the Tar Heels were ranked
    #2 in the country. He left after that, his junior year, for the ABA,
    where he was named Rookie of the Year in what would have been his
    senior year at Princeton.

    Last year, the Tigers lost to Arkansas by four (I think) and, of
    course, there was the famous 1st round game two years ago when they
    lost to Georgetown by only one -- due to a controversial foul call, at
    that. I've heard that described as the only game someone "won" despite
    having fewer points.

    This year, they played UNLV in Las Vegas and lost by about 30. Only
    other loss was to UC-Santa Barbara (I think).

    They were ranked #18 at end of season and seeded 8th in East, playing
    Villanova seeded 9th. Funny thing is, I think this will be tougher
    game than the Arkansas and Georgetown ones.

    Win or lose, though, Pete Carril is GREAT!! What a coach...

120.3Bad matchup for PrincetonPENSAR::LAZARUSDavid Lazarus @KYO,323-4353Fri Mar 15 1991 19:5114
    Jim:

    Weren't they NIT champs during your years there? There were some great
    battles with Penn, when the Quakers were a top 10 team. Penn never made
    it to the final 4 until 1979,well after their best teams.

    I agree that Villanova is one of the worst possible matchups they could
    have. I almost think the committee wants to embarrass the Ivy League by
    having its undefeated champion lost to a Big East also-ran who has no
    business being in the tournament.

    I think they played their first 8 games away this year! They had to
    play Loyola Marymount at home in their last game to avoid being below
    the NCAA minimum for home games.
120.4We'll show the committee!!DELNI::HALLFri Mar 15 1991 20:0711
    Yes, they won the NIT in 1975, beating Oregon State (?) in the finals.
    The N.Y. Times even wrote an editorial about it, entitled "Tiger
    Burning Bright". It was great. I was there for the final in Madison
    Square Garden.

    You know, they held Loyola Marymount to something like 48 points after
    LM averaged more than 100!!

    Go, Pete! Go, Kit! Go, Tigers, go!!

    Or so I thought, until I woke up at 4 a.m. reliving the blocked shot
    and then the layup down the middle...

    re. 5 regarding Villanova:

    This game really didn't get me too upset. Even though Villanova had no
    business being in the tournament,I knew they were the kind of team that
    would really give the Tigers fits. It came down to the talent of
    scholarship players for non-scholarship.

    Princeton played one of its sloppiest games of the year. the
    competition had a lot to do with it. The Tigers would have been a lot
    better off playing a team with a different style.

    Great attempts by Carrill at very end to try to steal game, but
    Villanova didn't grab the bait.

    Speaking of Princeton, there's a very interesting article on Hobey

I'm pissed.
I figured if Princeton could get by nova, they had an excellent chance
to upset NC.

120.11It has worked! (Almost did again - ref coulda called it.)RHETT::KNORRCarolina BlueMon Mar 18 1991 14:0112
    The announcer made a big deal about how he'd never seen that late-game
    tactic by Princeton work. Well, ... I HAVE!

    In 1978 URI was playing somebody in the tournament and Jack Kraft sent
    a game into OT on that *exact* play. Truly a thing of beauty.

    URI went on to lose to Duke, despite yet another unbelievable game from
    Sly Williams, who ate Gene Banks *alive*.

    Dean tried that in 1974-5 against Syracuse in East Regional semifinal
    loss.

    I'll really take my hat off to Pete Carril if he can get the troops
    rallied for one more shot at the second round after three consecutive
    first round losses by a total of 7 points. Anybody think he can have
    anything like the team of this year, once Kit Mueller leaves?

    I agree that the Tigers could have upset the Tar Heels. But three
    "could-a-been"s in a row is tough. Makes me know what a Red Sox fan
    feel like...

    What was the play at the end that Carill tried ?
120.15Carill not quite the genius everyone made him to beWORDY::NAZZAROSo much for Princeton!Tue Mar 19 1991 17:1210
    Carill got outcoached down the stretch, pure and simple. He cain't
    even get a shot off on their last possession, and on the previous
    possession they have to heave up somethin' just to beat the clock.
    Then, defensing the last play of the game, he goes man, and DOESN'T
    DOUBLETEAM THE MAN WITH THE BALL. Some poor little white kid gets
    abused, Miller hits an open 12 footer, and that's the game.

    Needless to say, I was very disappointed.

    	Nazz, I'm with you. For all the hoopla I heard about Carill, I
    felt the same. Everyone knew who was going to take the last shot
    including me. Why they didn't double team him is beyond me. For that
    matter why they didn't play zone for that last shot is another mystery.

    	Princeton had its chances in the last minute. They had two 1 and
    1 opportunities and they managed only one basket out of a possible 4
    points.

    Doc,
    .7 seconds left. Princeton runs the baseline, the Nova guy follows
    him, and a second Princeton stands in the Nova guys' path trying to
    draw a charge. It was a no-call because neither team gained an
    advantage.
120.18Bad way to end a seasonDELNI::HALLThu Mar 21 1991 12:443
    Another try was while inbounding to try to get the Nova guy to grab the
    ball before it was in play. They didn't bite!
