103.0. "English American Delights" by CRISPY::KEITHJ () Fri Feb 15 1991 13:04

    English geek again.

I've spent the last 3 summers in the US, and ahve fallen in love with
    American sport.

What seems to be the greatest tribute, is to the fans of rival teams,
in any sport, whats great to see is fans sitting next to each other
sharing popcorn ,or screeching for their team, I'm sure that there is a
rivalry between many teams and fans. What is good to see is that there
never seems to be such a tension that one fan needs to strike another
    fan.

Despite this, and this did annoy me, it upset me the way that Americans feel
that soccer in England is a dangerous sport to watch, and play. The
violence stems directly from rival gangs, not necessarily related to
the team that they are watching, but the part of the country that they
live. Its like a gang of people from Queens wanting to fight a gang
from Brooklyn. Its not related to sport, but a form of gang warfare,
that is bred, sorry, was bred, in an around the stadiums.

What also annoyed me was that many people hated the idea of soccer
succeeding in the US, many sports fans seemed satisfied with the 3
majors that the US dominates, Football, Basketball, and Baseball, and
were a little afraid of not being the best at a new sport. I am by no
means saying that this is typical. When I first came to the US about 8
years ago , i didn't know a baseball bat from a football, but over time
I learnt how each sport is played, noticed the difficulties, and
appreciated the skills, realising exactly what great fun the sports
    were.
I' d hope that many people would have a similar view to soccer, as it
starts to grow, especially in the East.

However, on e thing that encouraged me was when I went to practice with
the Ohio State soccer team. I used to play Semi pro and thought I'd
delight the Americans with my dazzling skills. 5 minutes in to the game
and i'd wished that i'd never showed up, They were all amazing, they
had skill, flair, determination ,and un yielding effort which was very
encouraging, and what's more, they were better than me!!!

P.s Are there likely to be any new Footbal franchises available? in
July I read an article about the setting up of new franchises.

p p s What does everyone think of the world Football league?
Unfortunately i think it will fail as not enough big names will
    be playing.....

Hi Nick,

I don't think there's any plans for new franchises in the NFL. Although
major League Baseball is planning to expand by at least two teams.

Re: the new football league. Success is unlikely. Although the American
Football league was eventually absorbed by the National Football League
and the resulting League separated into American Football Conference and
National Football Conference, every other attempt to form a separate
league, and there've been several, has been a bust.

Re: Soccer fights:
What you say may be true, but the news never says: Rival gang
warfare erupted during a Soccer Match....
They say: Soccer fans ran amok again, fighting, rioting in the
streets, overturning vehicles, etc.....
British Soccer fans are reknowned for this. Are you really
saying rival gangs travel to West Germany and Italy in order to battle
each other? Unlikely.
Violence by soccer fans is also a well documented fact in South
America and other countries where soccer is the major sport.

Well behaved American fans never stoop to this level... they
just threaten the players' wives.... ;'D

Welcome aboard

    Welcome aboard, Nick!

I find the "hooligan problem" an interesting one, since I have
witnessed it firsthand. I lived in Belgium from 82-84 and have often
thought about the issues regarding crowd control, rivalries among fans
of opposing sides, societal aspects of why people behave in certain
    ways, etc.

There is a soccer topic (14, I think) about the game itself, rules,
hooliganism, etc. and another topic (15) for club and international
level soccer. Generally, the moderators like people to keep the
conference tidy by entering comments as a reply into existing apropriate
topics, rather than creating a new one. However, there's nothing wrong
with starting a topic for the Tampa Bay Bucs, since one doesn't exist,
(being the off-season, I don't know how much action it will get), but
there already is a topic for the Chicago Bulls & Michael Jordan, so any
replies should go there instead of making a new one. The "Junk Note" topic
is really for just about ANYTHING that comes up, sports related or not.

    Have fun noting...

    Cheers,

    Tom

Who needs the ready made big names ? In London, Stan Gelbaugh, Dana
Brinson and the 'Nasty Boys' are now 'big names' to the Monarchs
faithful. I realise the situation may not be the same in the States,
but how else are we going to see live American Football on a regular
    basis.

    Question.
How much would a seat cost for an NFL game (average) opposite the 20
yard line, about 100 yards from the field ?

    Regards,
    Wayne
