68.0. "NFL "Most ......." Awards" by EARRTH::BROOKS (After further review ....) Fri Jan 11 1991 18:30

WHo are your picks for NFL MVP ????

    * NFC Offensive Player of the Year :

    Randall Cunningham - 3,500 yards passing and 30 TD's, over 940 yards
on the ground (6th in the NFC !). Without him, the Eagles would be
    lucky to win 6 games.

Runners Up - Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.

    * NFC Defensive PoY - Open for now.

    * NFC Offensive Rookie Of The Year :

Emmitt Smith of Dallas and Johnny Johnson of the Cards. Johnson did it
early, Smith did it late. Both ran well.

    * Defensive RoY :

Mark Carrier, Bears - Fantastic player and a hands down winner.

    * Coach Of The Year :

George Seifert, Niners - Great job keeping a great team on top without
a rushing game, and through injuries.

Runners Up - Jimmy Johnson, Mike Ditka

Flop Of The Year - LA Rams.
Suprise Team Of The Year - Cowboys
The One Good Year Award - Don Majowski, Packers
Comeback PoY - Everson Walls, Giants
Most Improved Player - Rodney Peete
Good Riddance Award - Buddy Ryan
    ============================================================

AFC Offensive Player Of The Year :

Warren Moon, Houston - The numbers speak for itself, anyone who saw the
playoff game knows better than to think that the offense will give any
    QB big numbers.

Runners Up - Thurman Thomas, Buff, Steve DeBerg of KC

Defensive PoY - Tie Derrick Thomas of KC, and Bruce Smith, Bills.

Offensive RoY - Jeff George, Colts. I stand corrected, he's going to be
a better QB than I thought he could.

Defensive RoY - James Francis of the Bengals. Next year, he take his
spot next to Tippett, LT, et al ....

Coach Of The Year - Art Shell, Raiders. He brought the Raiders back to
Oakland in spirit, if not in body. The NFL owes him a debt of gratitude
    for that alone.

Runner Up (A VERY close one) - Chuck Knox. Seattle was supposed to be
as bad as New England. Suprise.

2nd Runner Up - Don Shula

Flop Of The Year _ Cleveland, Denver
    Most Disappointing Team - Houston
Suprise Team Of The Year - Miami
The One Good Year Award - John Stephens, NE
The "Where in The Hell Did He From" Award - Richard Johnson, Hou.
Most Improved Player - Barry Word, KC.
Ownership Stupidity Award - Art Modell

Wow! Do my eyes deceive me ?

Seriously, I agree with most of your picks. On your AFC coach of the
year, I agree wholeheartedly. Everyone talks about Levy (he was good,
kept the bickering Bills in line) and Knox but Art takes the cake.

I can kind of see your point on John Stephens, Doc, but the guy did
rush for over 800 yards behind a pretty pathetic offensive line this
    year.

 * NFC Offensive Player of the Year :

Jerry Rice...only the 4th player ever to catch over 100 passes

* NFC Defensive PoY - Nobody had an outstanding season...Pepper Johnson
I vote because he does everything for the Giants...

* NFC Offensive Rookie Of The Year : Emmitt Smith...great draft choice for
       the cowpokes...

 * Defensive RoY :

Mark Carrier, Bears - no disagreement here....

* Coach Of The Year :

Buddy Ryan - slapped his offensive coordinator upside the head ofter 4 games
and turned the eagles around. Watch them fall apart next year...

Flop Of The Year - Lions...I expected at least .500 this year
Suprise Team Of The Year - Cowboys
The One Good Year Award - Don Majowski, Packers...100% on this one..
Most Improved Player - Rodney Peete. Could be best off season conditioning
program also...arm strength went up considerably this year.

AFC Offensive Player Of The Year :

Steve Deberg...only 4 ints. Great year for him and the Chiefs.

Defensive PoY - Bruce Smith Bills....

Coach Of The Year - Chuck Knox...I thought the Seahawks were gunning for a
patriot like season this year. The fact that he had them in playoff
     contention still amazes me.

Flop Of The Year _ Cleveland...
Most Disappointing Team - Pittsburgh...I was sure they would win the
        central easily...
Suprise Team Of The Year - Miami
The One Good Year Award - Brian Blades , Seattle
The "Where in The Hell Did He From" Award - Derrick Fenner, Sea
Most Improved Player - Barry Word, KC.

Yeah, Stephens ran behind a weak line, but it seemed to me that he
didn't have the fire of his rookie year (of course, with that O-line,
it's understanderable), and Marvin Allen ran better - at least when I
    saw him ....

68.10Majkowski DisagreementLUDWIG::BARBIERIGod can be so appreciated!Wed Jan 16 1991 19:1930
In reply to .0 and .5, I disagree with the statement on Majkowski.

Check out the Packers record after he went out with injury.
1-5. They lost their last five after beating an 'awesome'
      Tampa Bay team.

Yeah, it took him a while to get it together after the holdout
but he started really getting it going. They beat the Vikes,
played the 49'ers dead-even before losing 24-20, and blew away
the Raiders in LA. Seifert said Majkowski was the next Montana.
The Raiders players all complimented him. He played those games
with a line that allowed more sacks than any other team in the
NFL. In short, the Pack was on a roll until he got injured in
spite of playing behind that line.

Perhaps the Packers finish after he could no longer play suggests
to you he made no difference?!

The doctor who performed the surgery stated that Majkowski's rotator
cuff tear was a case of a recent injury doing more damage to an
already partially torn rotator cuff. The guy played through a
rotator cuff tear the last couple years at least. (It was known
he played in pain. The guy IS tough.)

Realizing Majik stunk things up for awhile on his road to being
ready after his holdout, nevertheless my own thoughts are that
you guys are light years off-base with your label on Majik.

68.11DECWET::METZGERWhy the rush for war ?Wed Jan 16 1991 20:209
Tony,

How many good years has Majic had ?

That's why he got the one year wonder award. Injury or No if you don't perform
for more than 1 season you're going to get people on your case about it.

Metz
68.12CSC32::P_PAPACEKWed Jan 16 1991 20:3012

Yes Majkowski has had only one good year, but he still ranked 8th or
9th in stats even though he missed 6 games this year. Now 8th or 9th
is not much to crow about, but extrapolate those numbers to a
complete 16 games and he's in the top 5.

I agree he does have to prove himself next year and the year after, but
I don't think its fair to put a "one year wonder" lable on him because of
    an injury.

Moons numbers where not inflated....does anyone have the Pass-Run
ratio for Moon this year and compare that to the 49ers pass-run
ratio for the last 3 years or so...By comparision if Moon is an
over rated QB than so is Joe Montana..!!!!
    								MAB
68.15Perception Difference?ROULET::BARBIERIGod can be so appreciated!Thu Jan 17 1991 16:2923
      Metz,

I suppose if Majik was out all year with some kind of injury
and you'd have given him the award, then its just a matter
of us perceiving the meaning of the award differently. So
we might really be in agreement about Majkowski and not the
        award.

One perception of the award is the guy who had one good year
and ended up not being much the rest of his career. In other
words a flash in the pan who was overrated. The other way is
        like you said.

With your own definition to be applied, I would then agree.
But, I'll bet a lot of people took it the other way and saw
Majkowski as an overrated player etc., etc.

Maybe I'm just bleeding Packer green! It was a tough season!

BTW, I second the defense for Moon. Over-rated?? His completion
percentage was good, wasn't it? I think he's excellent.

T is just bitter because his idol, the so-called 'genius' Glanville,
brought a fairly talented Falcons team in at 5-11.

Moon on the other hand, proved himself to be the Top Gun in the AFC.
    Nuff said.

    re Majkowski,

He had a great year in 89, then holds out for Montana-like bucks, based
on one season. Ridiculous. As a result of the holdout, he gets injured,
    and stayed injured all year.

Perhaps I was being a bit to strong in calling him a flash in the pan,
but he certainly is far from having proved himself ....

Tony,

I agree with you 100%. Notice I gave Brian Blades my flash award. He was a
player that was uninjured all year yet still managed to do nothing.

I think that the jury is out on Magic. He had a great year in '89. This year
he started out lousy (holdout which I blame on him) then played like a ball
of fire, then got injured.

I guess we'll have to wait till next year to see if he comes back and
performs ala '89 or plays like '88 or remains injured and gets the tag
"injury-prone" attached after his name.

DOn't you need to re-catogorize these awards - one for teams that play
real football, and another for the few teams who insist on playing
girly-mon, wimpy football in domes, like Houston and Detriot (tm)?

Thurman Thomas was AFC Offensive Player of the Year for Real Teams.
Warren Moon was the same for Girly-mon, stat-building, wimpy teams.

Bruce Smith was DPOY in AFC.

IN AFC, I go with either Jerry Rice of the Niners or Montana for
Offensive Player of the year, though Random Runner deserves some
praise, and for defense, it is very tough, and I give it to the Giants
as a team, with the 49ers second.

Boy some people need a logic shot...If you throw more passed then
anyone else than maybe that should be equal to gaining more yrds
although if Hodson had thrown the most pass attempts I doubt he would
have the #'s moon has....If you had an alawimpy QB in a run and shoot
you would have a low percentage of completions and a high interception
rate...also would not make it to the playoffs......No one has entered
the Moon Pass-run % compared to the Montana pass-run %, SF may not call
there offense a run-and-shoot but I bet there pass-run% is preety damm
close to Houstons......I guess that would make montana an alawimpy QB
as well as the whole SF 49er team.....This is of course using logic
from previous notes in the file....

Except for the "Majik was injured because he held out" logic.

Ultimately, I just hop he makes it back. Though its not likely,
the injury might be career threatening.

I've defended the Niners defense in the past, and overall, the Jints
defense, is IMO, better, but the Niners defense is very, very good. Of

The Giants have a much better defense than the 49ers. And much more
consistent. People might be misled by the fact that the 49er defense
looked so good in perhaps the two biggest games of the football season
(9er-Giants I and II), holding hte Giants offense without a touchdown,
but that is because they are unaware that the Giant offense is
    decidedly mediocre.

I see a real conflict of personalties brewing here with Dick
MacPherson. Irving is unjustifiably demanding more money (on an
advance payment of a bonus), while MacPherson continues to trot out
his philosophies on the good old days of football when there were
no agents and players kept their mouths shut and played for the fun of
it, etc. I think MacPherson will win this battle because of all of
Fryar's negative baggage with both the fans and the organization, but
I also continue to wonder about MacPherson's ability to cope with the
realities of the modern professional sports scene...

Fryar's got a lot of filberts to be damanding anything, in my opinion.

He is a jerk, and he does have a propensity to drop what could be
termed as "routine" passes. I must admit that he occasionally does
make a great catch, but whatever causes him to not make the less
spectacular play often puts the team in a hole.

I can't help but wonder what he might have already accomplished in his
career if he had played to his potential. He's got the tools, it's his
failure to use them that frustrates me.

    Where is his head?

Kind of reminds me of Ernest Gray who played for the Giants a while ago.

Could catch the toughest damn passes (you know, skying in the End Zone
in the very far corner in double coverage, with two defenders all over him)
but the most routine passes (the fly route, WIDE open, no defender with in
ten yards) and ol' Ernie does the butter fingers routine.....
