I guess this is as good a place as any.

As Hawk has metioned, he and I have played a game called "what was
there original name" in reference to sports stars who have chose to
follow Islam and changed their names.

For example:

It might be fun to mention a few more (cause I'm out of names).

    That's easy Hawk.  You see, Wilkes played in LA.  To play there you
    have to have some really slick nickname.  Wiles was known as "silk." 
    If he changed it to some Moslem last name, it wouldn't rhyme, and he
    just wouldn't fit into that LA image.

How about Zaid Abdul Aziz, who played for the Celts on a 10 day contract
back at the end of Havlicek's career.   Rumor has it that John said to
Zaid "Welcome aboard!" and Zaid responded "Boards?  Yeah, I'll get some

Susan,

I'd bet on the U.S. Hockey team that you mentioned.  I think that would've
bin in March 1980, but I'm not sure.

Since it was 4 magazines in a month, I can only imagine that it was one single
wowser of an event that made all those covers at once.  

In that sense, the U.S. Team pulled off the biggest upset in sport IMO.  

Damn, I can still see that Eruzione just throwing himself at every Russian and
going after every puck as if his life depended on it.  It sure was a funny
feeling after a while when we all started to realize that there was no way
they were gonna lose, just too much desire for the Russians to handle.

    This is what the answer was:Mark Spitz, Olga Corbett, The US Oplympic
    Hockey Team, and Secretariat.  This came from a trivia question from
    Bob Ryan of the Globe.  I don't know what his source was.  I called
    Time and they wouldn't help.  Sports Illustrated said they would  try
    to help, but the guy who knew was out sick. One of the people I 
    spoke with said they had seen the answer come across their desk, but
    couldn't find the paper!!!!

Players who have won back-to-back MVP awards at their positions.

There have been only nine of them, and the real coincidence is that each
of the nine played a different position; that is, by coincidence, the
nine winners each represent a separate position.... 1st base, 2nd base,
etc..... so that when all nine are listed, you have a complete team to
field.

Wanta try to finger out who they are? No fair looking it up! Take some

    I  eliebe there was a hoop tourney in Vancouver, Canada.  They used
    the portable court that hte Kingdome uses.  I believe the other
    schools included at least one Canadien University (U of BC), possible

 Okay, the whole story ...
 
 First weekend in December, my Significant Other boogied on down to visit
 her sister in Miami so the Breadmaker here decided he was going to invite
 "Da Boys" over for some satellite TV sports hopping, some poker, lots of
 brewskies, and some good ol' fashioned American male belchin', scratchin',
 and carryin' on.
 
 From 8:00pm until it was over, we watched the Hornets lose to the Knicks
 in the Garden as Ewing scored 51.  That ugly SOB owns the Hornets.  Geez,
 we need an axe to chop him down.  After the Hornets game was over, we
 found the Florida vs Florida State football game and then soon afterwards
 switched over to the Lakers against the Suns in Phoenix.
 
 Around about midnight when just about all the East coast games were done,
 we scanned the birds one mo' time and found UNLV playing in Vancouver, BC. 
 And, Dan'l is right, they had imported the floor from the Kingdome up to
 Vancouver.
 
 Vegas was playing ...	the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers.
 
 I have no idea who Georgia Tech lost to that night.

    of the fast-closing Nolan Ryan.  I'd be surprised if Palmer dominated

    This sounds like one of your basic growing legends, where as the modern
    day salaries go up, the oldtimers' go down.  Cobb was probably making
    somewhere between $15,000-$20,000 a year by the time he hung them up.
    He was probably making $60/month playing for the Buford Bigots of the 
    Georgia Agricultural League in 1905, and being fined twice that while 
    gambling ten times that much away in the bigs.

    The Ricky Bell Story, good movie, its shame his life was cut so short.
    I remember when he was draft #1 by his old USC coach(what is his name)
    and the fact that he was bigger than Tony Dorsett therefore better 
    suited for the pro game. I always wondered what would have happened on
    the football field if Tampa took Tony and Dallas took Ricky Bell. Sure
    enough a line in the movie has Bell saying he would have led the league
    in rushing if he had gone to Dallas.

    Francisco) and the Twins (2 times in Washington and 2 times in
    Minnesota).
    
    The book itself is tremendous.  It has updated averages on all players
    who'd ever appeared in games with chapters on the history of baseball,
    individual team histories, a page on each World Series and LCS, pinch
    hitting, families, untimely deaths, umpires, college baseball, Negro
    League baseball and many, many other topics.  It's meant to both be a
    reference book and go beyond with good writing on lots of other things.

other note is the Bruins have the Current Longest >.500 season streak of any

never be great and The CELTICS are the Best all Time B-Ball team in all aspects

I think the Bruins *might* be fifth, but not third.

I don't have my copy here with me, but in my hockey stats book they listed
dynasties, and Boston wasn't listed.

The teams that fulfilled the "dynasty" criteria were Montreal, Toronto,
Detroit, NY Islanders and the Edmonton Oilers.

Since Boston has a longer NHL history than Edmonton or the Isles, I'd
bet they might be fourth after Montreal, Toronto, Detroit...

But I wouldn't bet my paystub on it.

As to other cities that are right up there in many different sports, you've
got to look at New York....

    New York has, I'd guess, the most pro champeenships.  I mean the
    Yankees have what, 23 or so titles alone?  That's probably close to all
    of Boston's sports titles together.   The Canadiens have 20+ stanley
    cup victories.
    
    L.A. can't be doing to badly either.  Even if you take away the titles
    the Lakers won in Minny, the Dodgers won in NY, you'd still get a fair
    amount of titles.  
    
    If you take away the Celtics, Boston hasn't had a championship since
    the Bruins in what, 1972, almost 20 years ago?  
    
    Wonder what the titles are per city over the last 25 years?   (that
    basically brings us to the modern expansion times in the sports)

    	I made a list of major sports championships(NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB)
    won per city(circa 1903)about 2 weeks ago.  New York, by far and away, 
    has the most pro champeenships of any North American city with 46.  
    Among American cities, Boston is 2nd with 27.  I didn't count Canadian
    cities, otherwise Montreal would have probably been a close third.
    
    	Other cities that have won quite a few times are Chicago(15+),
    Detroit(15+), L.A.(10+), Philly(10+), San Fran/Oakland(10+), St. Louis
    (10+ - mostly the Cardinals), and Pittsburgh(10+ - not including 
    recent Pens SC victory).
    
    	I'll bring in the list tomorrow.

    I love it - the typical Boston sports fan trying to prove that Boston
    is the best sports city.  What a crock.  I'm not claiming any city is
    the best sports city.  Geez.  Why is it so important for some folks to
    want to prove that Boston is the best sports city?  Are they so
    insecure in their rooting for the home teams that they can't fathom
    that other cities have some incredible fans?  Heck, some places  don't
    have pro sports - but they super fans.   And the author is conviently a
    Bulls fan.  I mean Chicago has won one champeenship in recent memory -
    the Bears in 85 - yet I'd consider Chicago to be one of the best sports
    towns in America.  
    
    And if you want to get technical - just take the old established NY
    teams and compare to Boston - the Yanks, Giants, Rangers and Knicks. 
    they have more champeenships than Boston, if it makes you happy.  The
    Pats have never won,  The SOx last won in 1918, the Bruins in 1972 and
    the Celtics 5 years ago???

    	As promised, here is the list of titles won per city.  I've 
    extracted two lists - 1 since 1903 and the other since 1956,
    which covers the modern expansion era.  MLB started keeping track
    of titles in 1903, NHL in 1927, NBA in 1947, and the NFL in 1933.
    New York's titles are further broken down by bourough, and also 
    includes New Jersey(football GIANTS) and Long Island(hockey Islanders).
    Milwaukee and Green Bay were consolidated into the same area since
    the Packers play exhibition and a home game in Milwaukee.  San

    A couple of thoughts/problems:
    
    - Pittsburgh has 8 since '56.  
    
    - Why did you choose '56 anyway?  Baseball expanded in 61-62. Hockey
      in 67.  Not sure about Football and Basketball.
    
    - I think you gotta include the Canadian Cities.
    
    - I think you should break up SF/Oakland.  If not, then you might as
      well combine D.C & Baltimore.  (Almost as close and there's no toll!).
    
    - Another interesting study would be the rate of championships per team
      season.  For example, Pittsburgh would have a rate of 6.0%. (10 titles
      in 168 team seasons (5/87 Pirates, 4/57 Steelers, 1/24 Penguins).

    	'56 was a random starting point.  Besides, it wasn't soon
    afterwards that the Dodgers left Brooklyn, Giants left the Polo
    Grounds, the Hawks(B-ball)left St. Louis, etc.
    
    	I disagree on SF/Oakland and with the D.C./Baltimore analogy.
    SF/Oakland are only separated by 8 miles of water, if that.  Though
    D.C. and Bmore are real close for 2 large cities, they are not 
    officially part of the same metropolitan area in the same way that
    Oakland is a part of the San Francisco Metro Area.  DC and Baltimore
    have their own suburbs.  Saying that SF/Oakland should be separate 
    would be like Dallas/Fort Worth should be(if Fort Worth had a professional 
    team).  Or the Twin Cities(Minny/St. Paul).  Your mileage may vary.
    
    	FWIW, I did a separate tally on the Canadian cities.  Montreal
    has 22 Stanley Cup titles(1 by the old Montreal Maroons).  Toronto
    has 11, Edmonton 5, Calgary 1, and Ottawa(whatever team that was)
    has 1.  Since '56, Montreal has 16, Toronto 4, Edmonton 5, Calgary
    1.  Should the CFL be included amongst the tally?  I'll leave that 
    choice up to you and the other noters.

    You have to divide the number of titles by the number of teams in a
    city. Miami, for example, rankes near the bottom, with "only" 2 Dolphin
    Super Bowls. The only other team in town is the Heat, and they are only
    a couple of years old. Therefore Miami's record is actually much better, 
    since they've won 2 titles in 30 years (?) and the heat 0 in 2, so
    dividing by the # of teams, it averages out to a title every 8 years. 
    New York has 9 teams, and many of them are long established (Ynakees,
    Knicks, Rangers, Giants) so the numbers are misleading.

	A few days ago my 2 year old son was playing around in the yard with

    Well, you're close.  Fred Merkle was on first when a single scored the
    winning run from third in the bottom of the ninth.  Then everybody
    started celebrating, including Fred, who never made it to second.
    The other team eventually got the ball to second and he was forced
    out, nullifying the run.
    
    I'm pretty sure that this all happened in 1908 in a pennant race
    between Merkle's NY Giants and the Cubs, who eventually won the
    pennant (and their last world series, holy cow).  Merkle was a rookie 
    who went on to a pretty decent career, amazingly enough.  
    
    I remember reading a pretty bizarre account of this in some baseball book, 
    including some fan picking up the ball during the celebration before
    the force out and being punched by a player (Johnny Evers?) before giving 
    up the ball.  Great stuff.

 nipped the Eagles, 14-13, on two very late Bartkowski TD passes.  
 The Eagles lost a chance to win at the gun because they didn't have a
 kicker (believe it or not) and their punter, Mike Michel, miserably
 shanked a FG attempt.    The Falcons then lost their next playoff
 game ... to Dallas, I believe.
 
 The Falcons next made the playoffs in 1980 when they won the NFC West
 with a 12-4 record.    This was their best team ever.   Bartkowski
 still at quarterback with mega-stud William Andrews at running back. 
 They lost to Dallas again in the playoffs.   I seem to recall that
 Danny White hit Drew Pearson or Tony Hill with a last minute TD to
 squeeze out a comeback win.    Dallas then lost to the Eagles the
 next week in Philly for the NFC title.
 
 I don't think they've been back since but they may have made it in
 the 1982 strike year when they just took the top 8 teams from each
 conference and lined them up in a straight elimination tournament.

    I'll look it up tonight since I don't have my NFL manual here.  As far
    as percentage goes, I will use a base of 25 years (1966 being the year
    of Super Bowl 1) for all teams except Seattle and Tampa Bay since they
    didn't come into the league until 1976 and 15 years for the Hawks and
    Bucs.  Cincinnati will have a base of 23 years since they came into the
    league in 1968.
    
    It sounds like though what you're really looking for is to show how
    lousy the Packers have been.  If you want to do that it should be
    the years 1968-present (23 years) since the 1967 season was the last
    time the Packers went to the Super Bowl.  In the interest of fairness,
    I'll have 1966 as the first year.

  Not only that, but Michel missed a PAT which was the margin of victory.
  They did lose to Dallas, 27-20, the following week, but played well,
  leading at half time but a TD, and were in the game until the end.

  Biggest loss in Falcon history.  They led by 12 entering the final
  period, I believe.

  They were the #5 team in the strike season (only team from the western
  division to make the playoffs that year as Saints were 4-5, SF 3-6,
  and LA at 2-9 all missed out).  Falcons lost 30-24 in the Metrodome.

  Atlanta has not been back since.

  The Saints, with 2 playoff appearances since Super Bowl I, are indeed
  the answer to both questions.  Everyone else has made it more times since
  then.

    The Lions were the last team in the playoffs - with a losing record -
    during the stike year.  They also won their division (9-7 I think) one
    of the years Billy Sims was a Pro-Bowler.  They may have had some
    apperences during the eaier years also.
    
    RE: picking on Green Bay.
    
    Yah, it may not be sportmanlike but it is fun razzing Packer fans.  Its
    hard to emphathize (sp?) with people who think that since its the
    Lombardi trophy that GB will always be the greatest team.  Or when a
    local song talks about using deer rifles on Chicago tourists.  And a
    local bank's advertizing pitch is that all of their branches are in
    the local area.

    Lowest playoff appearance percentage since 1966 - New Orleans - 2/24 or
    8.3%.
    
    Fewest appearances since 1966 - New Orleans with 2 (1987 and 1990), and
    4 teams tied at 3:  Atlanta with 3 (1978, 1980 and 1982), Detroit with
    3 (1970, 1982 and 1983), Tampa Bay with 3 (1979, 1981 and 1982) and
    Cardinals with 3 (1974, 1975 and 1982).  Green Bay has been in 4
    playoffs (1966, 1967, 1972 and 1982).  If you ask the question such
    that you use 1968 as the starting year then Green Bay is indeed tied
    with New Orleans for fewest playoff appearances with 2 and 8.7%.
    
    The teams that have gone the longest since being are the ones above -
    Atlanta, Detroit, Green Bay, Tampa Bay and the Cardinals have not been
    in the playoffs since 1982, which was the year of the expanded
    playoffs.
    
    The longest non-appearance string since the Super Bowls were founded
    belongs to the Saints who missed the playoffs for 20 years before
    making them for the first time in 1987.  The Saints were founded in
    1967.  The team that went the longest without making the playoffs was
    the Steelers.  From the beginning of the NFL playoff system in 1933
    they went 49 years before making their first appearance in 1972.  Other
    long no-show streaks belong to Denver (17 years), New York Giants (17
    years), Cardinals (24 years), Washington (25 years) and San Francisco
    (20 years).
    
    The teams that have made the most appearances since 1966 are Dallas
    (17), Rams and Raiders (16 each), Minnesota (15), Miami (13), Cleveland
    and Pittsburgh (12 each), Washington and San Francisco (11 each).
    
    The most playoff appearances ever belong to the Rams (21), Giants (20),
    Cleveland (19), Washington (17) and Raiders (16).  The highest
    percentage of making the playoffs all-time are the Raiders at 16/31,
    51.6% and Cleveland, 19/41, 46.3%.

    I would probably consider only one of these players to be an obvious

    the early teams played less than the current 82 games per season.  Look
    at how many games it took.

    sports, what really counts is champeenship banners.   Total victories
    can do nothing but show a history of winning seasons - but even that
    becomes hollow if there's no linen hanging from the rafters.

    since it has to do almost totally with longevity.  Same with losses. 
    Teams that have been around for a while, such as the Celtics, lead in
    wins and are close to the top in losses too.
    
    Winning percentage over history is a better measure of a franchise's
    productivity.  But of course, championship banners are better.

    No, what really counts is offering an all-around quality product which
    fans can readily and affordably enjoy.  I'm not talking in terms of 
    "better" or "best", just "good" and "bad".  I think Phoenix is a 
    franchise that has satisfied the criterion for goodness in quality 
    sports entertainment.
    
    Championships are gravy, the rare rewards that are to be celebrated and
    cherished when and and if they come.  I don't think there's anything 
    hollow about a season that doesn't end in one (from a fan's perspective, 
    not a player's).  If I felt otherwise, I wouldn't waste my time with
    spectator sports, knowing that 95% of the time I'd come away feeling

    It also has a brief explanation of each answer.  You might want to pick

    I was not suggesting that the book be used to answer a question.  I was
    merely suggesting that it would have been very useful in situations

    question.
