825.23Serial port always in use???NEWVAX::WHITMANgun control = 5% gun + 95% controlTue Mar 04 1997 12:3221
I have a Performa 575 running Mac/OS 7.5 which has started giving me an
error stating that the "...Serial port is already in use" whenever I try to
access the ISP. I think the problem started when I tried to set my Global
Village software to receive a fax, but I've changed so many things now that I'm
pretty much lost. I occasionally get an error saying "...that pesky MacTCP
is acting up again..." or something real close to that.

I have tried deleting the MAC/TCP and PPP files and re-installed from
the ISP CD, but that didn't help. I've played in the Chooser and have not
found any success.

Anyone have any suggestions as to where I should go from here? Is there
some test software that ships with the Mac to help me isolate the problem or
the setting(s) I have screwed up?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. It's my wife's machine and she's
getting annoyed that it's broken and she can't get her internet access.

Thanks,

Al

A friend recently said she had that problem...and it turned out to be
a setting in clarisworks or Microphone or some such software
that had a setting like you describe...it caused the software to
grab the modem port all the time and to be prepared to acccept
a fax. She tried lots of things but could not get rid of this
error until turning off that switch.

Go back to your fax software and look for that switch, turn it off, and
reboot....

I recently had such a problem after intallation of MSIE 3.0, coming
along with the Personal Web Server.
Is it your case too?

It seems that more and more software is being designed so that it
refuses to relinquish the port if requested.

I have FAXcilitate 2.1 with my Supra modems, and I've been very happy
with it in this regard; I could just leave it turned on, and when I
wanted to use the port with another program, everyone sorted things out
    fine.

FAXcilitate 2.2, available as a downloadable upgrade, does NOT play
nicely. I installed it and found that it wouldn't let the port go. I
spoke with Diamond Tech Support about it, and the response was a shrug
and an explanation that certain machines, with certain versions of
MacOS, get into trouble if all the serial software plays nicely, so
Diamond changed FAXcilitate so that it would refuse to give up the
port. I've downgraded back to 2.1 and plan to stay there.

I have no problems with FreePPP 2.5v2 and Global Village modem software
(version 2.6, I believe - the most current I am aware of) on my
Performa 6115CD. I have thought about downloading MSIE 3.0, but
haven't done so yet. The potential IE 3.0 issue is food for thought...

825.28Maybe 'commcloser' will help - maybe notUNIFIX::HARRISJuggling has its ups and downsWed Mar 05 1997 14:0015
I don't know if this will help or not, but there is a program that can
be downloaded from C|Net called commcloser.sit.hqx. Here is the
    description:

CommCloser - CommCloser is a program to close comm ports left open
by crashed programs. You should not use it on any comm port
currently in use. for example, if you have a comm program running,
don't close the modem port. The program is whateverware - if you
like it, do something - send money, call your grandmother...

    Try looking for it at:

I used CommCloser in '94 when I was having trouble with ports hung
open. It worked sometimes, didn't work others. As I upgraded to newer
versions of MacOS, CommCloser worked less and less often, until finally
one day it wouldn't work at all. Unless this is a new version of it, I
wouldn't waste my time trying it.
