    I've done a cosmetic revamping of my page with instructions for
    connecting to the Spit Brook dial-ins from home.  There's a little more
    information, some more external links, and a new look.

    Several people have used the info on this site to connect to other
    Digital facilities, so it's not ENTIRELY a snob page.  :-)

    Frames, frames and more frames...
    
    The new look is nice, but with the old page, I was able to
    print a postscript copy of the whole thing, take it home,
    and setup my Mac.  Now, I have to save each frame, print them
    one at a time, and then take it home.
    
    Having the 2 frames at the bottom keeps me from having more of the real
    instructions visible at any one time.  How about putting the "table
    of contents" and "MacMade" frames in the left-hand column and letting
    the actual informatin run from top-to-bottom?
    
    However, that aside, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to
    put all of this together.  It certainly got me going in no time
    at all.

    The only pages you really need to print are the one with the phone
    numbers and the one with the actual installation and configuration
    instructions.  :-)  I deslgned the new look with that in mind.
    
    Having the frames makes it much easier to move around the site as a
    whole, because you don't have to keep scrolling to find the piece you
    want to read.

    Okay, it's there.  I put up revisions to my site showing how to obtain,
    install, and configure Open Transport.  Don't complain about what the
    Open Transport control panel looks like, please; I didn't choose the
    color, I just snapped the screen shot.  :-)

    For the record, you need three pages when you take the stuff home.  The
    page on "Installing and Configuring the Software" lists them - it's one
    of the three - and has links directly to the other two, so you can grab
    them and print them easily.

My fresh experience with Open Transport was much smoother than Dick's advice
would have led me to believe.  Dick has provided elaborate instructions for how
to install OT on a 7.5.3 system where it didn't get installed originally. 
However, OT 1.1.2 will do an install from scratch on a Performa 5200/5300/6200/
6300 system, which are the only systems where OT wasn't installed as part of the
original 7.5.3 installation.

Last week, I finally upgraded my Performa 6205 to 7.5.5 (using the 7.5.5 upgrade
installer that came on the AICK 1.2 CD).  Then, last weekend, I downloaded OT
1.1.2 and OT/PPP 1.0 from Apple and installed them.  The installation went
without a hitch; it probably took me less than five minutes to configure my new
TCP, PPP, and Modem control panels; and I connected successfully to my ISP the
first time.  (Also, it now really works to let PPP dial the modem and make the
network connection automatically in the background when I open a connection from
a network application -- under my old MacTCP/SimplePPP configuration, I had to
start up SimplePPP and connect manually first, since it would always time out if
I tried to let it open automatically.)

Finally, I had no trouble connecting to the ZK dialin with OT/PPP.  I simply
typed the connect sequence manually the first time, let OT/PPP record it, and
the resulting connect script works fine.

I'm really pleased with the combination!

It's all in the PPP documentation (a pdf file that you can download separately
from the network install kit).  If I remember correctly, it worked something
like this:

	In the PPP control panel, you choose the options button, and in the
	connection tab, you select the option for "use a terminal to connect",
	but *not* the "use a script" option.

	When you connect, PPP will bring up a terminal window, and you get the
	prompts from the LAT server and type the login command sequence there.

	Once the connection is made, I think that there is a "save dialog"
	button at the bottom of the terminal window (but maybe you have to click
	it before you start the login dialog).  It brings up a standard save
	file box to save the login dialog as a CCL script in a plain text file.

	Now go back to the connection options page in the PPP control panel, 
	click the "use a script" button and "import script", and specify your
	saved dialog script in the open file box that comes up.

	Save the configuration, and you're done.

Some details are probably wrong here, but it's really pretty easy.
