This looked to be as good a place to ask this as any...

Our school is preparing to install an ethernet network
over the summer. And we are also discussing what
Server to buy. Generally the 'Mac' side would prefer
to stick with Macs....lots of experience, we have
similar all Mac networks in the district, etc.

but there are many people in town who feel that WindowsNT
Servers are the only way to go. I guess that means
Novell? And it can support Macs and PCs?

If we go all Mac, the server would run AppleShare. The
Macs would likely run AtEase for Workgroups. Each kid
would get an account through AtEase and have space on the
Server. Can you add a PC to this type of network? What
would the PC look like? Clearly it cant run AtEase.
What would it do to connect to the network. How would it see
printers, internet, etc.

Conversely, if we go with a WindowsNT Server, what would the
Macs look like (and the PCs). What would the interace be
to the kids? Could the Macs still run AtEase?

I'm being told that if we go with a Mac Server, that you
cannot add a PC to the network. I find this hard to believe.

    Re .32,

If you were to put in a Windows NT Server, it becomes the file and
print server for the Macs via AppleShare and AppleTalk. As a file
server, the NT server does not interfere with the execution of the
software (such as AtEase) on the client Macs. You can certainly add
PCs to this environment. The NT server also provides file and print
services for the PCs, similar to the way it does for the Macs, but
using different protocols (ie. NetBEUI). The NT server also provides
services for all PC and Mac clients via TCP/IP as well, thus making it
    a good Internet gateway.

All of the above comes bundled, ready to run on the Windows NT Server.
You do not have to purchase add-on software for any of the above
    capabilities.

If you were to put a beefed up MacOS system as a server for the Mac
clients, i'm not sure if NetBEUI is available on the MacOS for you to
add the PCs into the environment. The AIX Apple Server (UNIX based)
does have PCshare available, but you'll have to buy it and others
separately. However, putting it into the environment will create a
three-OS situation that can be hard to manage.

If it is a Mac only environment, i'd suggest going with a beefed up
PowerPC MacOS server. If it is a Mac/PC environment, i'd suggest going
with a Windows NT server. The AIX Apple Server tends to be overpriced
    for its value.
