Several applications, like Word and WriteNow, have the ability to
separately print even numbered and odd numbered pages, which allows one to
do poor-man's double-sided printing. But many other applications do not
have this feature.

Has anyone found a solution to that problem (other than "n" separate
printing jobs for "n" pages)?

I use LaserWriter 8.4.1 and a DEClaser 1152 printer; system 7.5.5; 68040
Mac.

There's a commercial application that does this (and a lot of other things).
The name is "ClickBook" or "QuickBook" or something like that. It intercepts
print jobs and automatically does things like odd/even pages, reversed page
order, multiple pages on one sheet to make a foldable brochure, etc. I've seen
it in the stores, and it sounds pretty neat, and it's gotten decent reviews in
the newsgroups, but it's never seemd worth the $50 or so to me, so I haven't
tried it.

I got a copy of ClickBook free when I bought ClarisWorks 4.0, and I
find it to work very well. It does all the things Neil says, and it
    seems pretty reliable.

The software is called ClickBook and you can learn more about it at
    http://www.ffg.com/wp/clickbook.html

Another product that does the same thing is DynoPage. This is also
commercial software. It is by Portfolio Systems who I think have now
folded. (I use DynoPage so it figures they'd go belly up. The software
still works on MacOS 7.5.5 but not with LaserWriter 8. I keep a copy of
LW7 around for using DynoPage. ClickBooks does not work with LW8
either, so it's a draw there.)

Another alternative is to print to a file and then use Lizzy Borden
(available in our archives) to break the file up into odd and even
pages. I've noticed some peculiarities with LB (like having to print
page 1 in order to download fonts to the printer) but it works.

I think that LaserMerge might also do this (www.mindgate.com).

On the contrary, ClickBook works perfectly with LW8. I've been using it with
no problems all along, up through 8.4.1 (I may have even installed 8.4.2, in
which case it works with that too... but I don't recall for sure.)

Sorry to mislead then, I got that information from tech support. I
wrote asking if ClickBook supported LW8 because I use LW8.4.2 and have
to back up to LW7 to use DynoPage. Since I can't seem to contact
Portfolio I assumed they were defunct and started investigating other
alternatives. Tech Support for ClickBook wrote back saying it also was
incompatible with LW8. That was only a few months ago. I'm not sure if
there has been an update since, or if the information was just wrong?

This Laser Merge product mentioned a few pages back seems very slick. I
downloaded the Demo but have not had time to try it yet. It does what
ClickBook and DynoPage do and a whole lot more. The ability to merge
pages from different programs certainly has some prospects. I'm glad
this topic came up or I would never have seen LaserMerge. Booklet
printing is my primary concern, I do a lot of it. This product seems
like it can handle that task easily and lots of others too. ClickBook
and DynoPage both qualify for competitive upgrade prices too! Check out
the URL given a few notes back if you are looking for any type of
printer utility...this thing does it all, from booklets to toner
    density control!

I have Click Book, and it does do what you want; but it can distort
page images. Unlike PostScript, which scales images beautifully, Click
Book uses their own scaling algorithm, which sometimes results in
    what-you-got-is-not-exactly-what-you-saw.
