22.256TELNET vs LAT Download Problems32068::BENDECKSun May 25 1997 17:5945
I've been using ZMODEM for several years now to download files from the
MacOnline archives to my Mac at home. I normally dialup one of the MKO
DECservers at 9600 bps using Microphone II and connect to my VAX/VMS
host via CONNECT <hostname> at the DECserver Local> prompt using LAT
protocol. All of the steps are contained in a dialup script within
    Microphone II. Everything works fine.

Recently, my office moved to ZKO and I noticed several changes and
problems while dialing into the ZKO DECservers:

    - The DECserver names are different, e.g. ZKOxxx> instead of Local>

    - The default protocol on the ZKO DECservers seems to be PPP, not LAT.

    - I am unable to connect to my VAX/VMS host, which also relocated to
      ZKO, using LAT protocol, e.g.

    	> CONNECT <hostname> does NOT work
    	> CONNECT LAT <hostname> does NOT work
    but ...
    	> TELNET 16.29.160.19 works with host IP address

So, I can connect to my VAX host fine as long as I use TELNET. I can
login, read mail, edit files, etc. no problem.

But now, ZMODEM no longer works. Everytime I try to download a file,
nothing happens. ZMODEM just times out with 0 blocks transferred. All
of the ZMODEM parameters seem to be set correctly on both ends. Is
there a problem using ZMODEM over a TELNET connection? Do some
parameters need to be setup differently to allow transfers over a
TELNET connection _vs_ a LAT connection? Do the DECservers in ZKO
    support LAT connections?

Note that I can use FreePPP 2.5v3 and MacTCP 2.0.6 to successfully
connect to the ZKO DECservers to access the Internet using Netscape
3.01. This connection works fine from home. Is there a way to
download files over this type of connection without having to startup
Netscape? Fetch or FTP maybe? Would it be possible to startup a
terminal emulator on top of the PPP connection and then use ZMODEM?

As you can probably tell, I am not very familiar with using TELNET
connections. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Paul

I've used NCSA's Telnet for my terminal connections and it does not
allow me to use Xmodem. I believe that once you are using a PPP
connection Xmodem is no longer usable. I've said before in this
conference that the reason I keep using NCSA's Telnet is that it
implements an ftp server so I can grab/send files without having to
    launch Fetch.

I do like fetch though when I have multiple files to grab. You should
not have to use Netscape to grab files, if the systems you need to get
files from run ftp you should just use Fetch.

If you must use XMODEM over a PPP connection, you can use MacTerminal with
TCPack. MacTerminal supports XMODEM over its terminal connections, even
if they are going over Telnet via TCPack.

22.259PPP is great unless you have a slow connectionUNIFIX::HARRISJuggling has its ups and downsMon May 26 1997 23:0226
If you have a PPP connection, then I suggest you stay with PPP and use
FTP via Fetch, NCSA Telnet, Anarchie, or Netscape (which ever is handy
    at the time).

I use NCSA Telnet as my multi-window terminal emulator all the time
(I'm typing this on NCSA Telnet right now). Most of the stuff you want
can be found in the HUMANE::MacOnLine conference.

There are other Telnet capable terminal emulators. MacTerminal with
the FTPack (both of which are part of the PATHWORKS for Macintosh kit
that can used by Digital employees). The FTPack that provides a Telent
Comm ToolBoxTool can also be used with VTstar (My wife prefers VTstar
    and uses that approach).

    ----

However, if you only have 9600 baud access, PPP is marginal (you can
live with it, but it is not as much fun as 28.8 or 33.6). In that case
a direct terminal emulator connection is more responsive at 9600 baud.

So I might ask which phone numbers you are using to connect to ZKO. It
has been awhile since I used the LAT ports, so I don't know if they
have been changed to not support LAT. You might try contacting the
ZKO support group asking them for a list of modem phone numbers.

ZKO seems to have two sets of modems. The 28.8 modems run PPP as you've
noticed. I don't think you can get to LAT from them (though I thought that
was possible some time ago). Try any of the following for 9600 access to LAT
and ZModem transfers (all (603) 881- or DTN 381-):

1608 1609 1736 1821
1513 1218 1223 1489
1224 1229?
22.261Are the LAT Group codes setup correctly?UNIFIX::HARRISJuggling has its ups and downsTue May 27 1997 14:5020
One more thought. Since your systems just recently moved to ZKO, is it
possible that they do not have the correct "LAT Group Codes" enabled to
talk to the DECservers handling the modem ports.

It has been awhile since I played with an OpenVMS system and configured
LAT (early '90s), but I seem to recall that the DECservers get
configured to take to a specific set of LAT Group codes, and the
OpenVMS systems need to listen for at least one of the same Group
    codes.

If the DECserver is configured for LAT, but you still can not get
through, then I suggest looking at your OpenVMS LAT setup.

At the local> prompt (or ZKOxxx> prompt) you can use HELP to find the
SHOW command that will tell you what the LAT Group codes are. I think
you can use MCR LATCP to find out how the OpenVMS system is configured.

    Good luck.
