21.735Need Some TeachingMAL009::MAGUIREThu Apr 10 1997 16:0526
I need a tutor. The Mac I bought before Christmas is still sitting
pretty much untouched. I took a one day Intro to Mac at a place in
Woburn, but didn't get as much out of it as I expected.

In addition, I just do not have the time and patience to put into self
teaching/trial and error. I would like to find a person willing to
come to my home and spend a couple of days with me and my Mac to show
me around, answer some questions, etc.; a Saturday or Sunday, maybe
even a weekday; my job is flexible. Even if someone knows a young
person who's good with a Mac, I don't care. I will pay something
reasonably reasonable, but I guess that would have to be discussed
because I wouldn't know where to start with an offer.

My girlfriend in Florida is too far away to help, but she's been in
charge of a computer lab using Macs at a Florida school for a number
of years now. It's not that easy doing stuff over the phone.

I live north of Boston in the vicinity of the intersections of Rte 114
    and Rte 128.

I'm open to any suggestions, ideas, offers, etc., etc.

    Thanks,

If you can run Windows 95, you can run a Macintosh. The main
	differences are:

Your disks appear along the right side of the desktop
instead of hiding within "My Computer".

Applications share the menu bar at the top of the
screen rather than having a menu bar on each window.

The "Apple" menu in the upper-left corner acts
much like the "Start" button in W95 and the icon
in the upper right corner acts like the tool (status?)
bar in w95, allowing you to switch between applications
even wne the application's windows are hidden.

You mark a file for deletion by dropping it on the
		trash icon.

You eject a floppy or CD-ROM by dragging it to the
		trash icon.

You select a printer using the "Chooser" from the
		Apple menu.

If by any chance you don't find anyone to make a house call to the
Peabody area, just come back to this conference with questions. There
are lots of us Mac types in Digital Around the World that are ready,
willing, and able to answer lots of your questions. And we don't give
up easily. We can help by pointing you to various applications,
shareware, comm utilities, and guide you through connecting to work via
a PPP connection so that you can browse the web, telnet into the office
    to read your mail, etc...

    Just ask.

Maybe she would like to go to Colorado for a spring ski trip. Days
skiing, nights working on the Mac. Or at least the weekends before and
    after the trip.

Just how close do you live to a ski area? :-)

About 1.5 hours from the slopes and I work weekends so she needs to ski
while I work...and then we need to discuss the fee. 8) I am open to the
    idea though.

Yeah, I was kind of thinking I'd rather see Colorado than stick around

that's the way it is. Sounds wonderful........

21.744Same code, different size?PCBUOA::GLANTZWed May 28 1997 16:5620
Why does ostensibly the same piece of code vary in size?

When I installed Adobe Type Reunion v2.0, Adobe's installer added an extension
"Macintosh Drag and Drop 1.1.1" to my System folder. OK, thank you, I always
wanted to do drag and drop while running System 7.01.

Then I upgraded to America Online v3.0.1. Their installer replaced that same
extension with an identically named one.

I imagine the AOL installer figured that was the right move because even though
the version number of the extension was the same, the Modification date was
later:

  Installer Name Vers	Modified Size
------------	-----------------------------	----	-------- ----
Type Reunion	Macintosh Drag and Drop 1.1.1	v1.1	3/21/94 36K
AOL Macintosh Drag and Drop 1.1.1	v1.1	3/22/94 44K

Both versions of the extension appear to work satisfactorily. Yet the one
created 24 hours later is 22% bigger. Why?
21.745Added Resources maybe?UNIFIX::HARRISJuggling has its ups and downsWed May 28 1997 17:1920
It could be that they are not exactly the same, just have the same
    name.

It could be because AOL added a resource to the file. Something that
    their service needs/wants.

Finally, I don't know if you are looking at the byte sizes of the 2
files and just giving use the rounded K value or if these are the K
values reported by the Finder. Since the Mac allocates memory in
allocation units that are a function of the size of the disk, it could
be that the AOL file is just a few bytes larger than the Type Reunion
file, but the extra bytes caused the file to require an additional
allocation unit which the bumped the allocation of the file up to the
next larger size (assuming your disk allocates storage in units of 8
    blocks - 8192 bytes).

You could use ResEdit to examine the various resources in the 2 files
and figure it out, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Since I downloaded the 68K version of AOL, I presume they only sent me
68K code, not a fat binary.
21.748AOL may be rendering your assumption useless.CSC32::M_HERODOTUSMario at CXO3/B10 ColoradoThu May 29 1997 19:399

That still is just an assumption though. They could have specific
versions of their own code and a fat version of Apple's code? But
that's a guess too. I would expect that versions with the same number
would be the same size, but AOL may have done something or could be
releasing a version that was not meant for release...they did this with
the ObjectSupportLib files too and created a lot of confusion.
