Where did you hear that "we" do not sell DECtalk anymore? DECtalk Express
and DECtalk PC are still very profitable products within Digital.
Also, you might consider talking to the Alpha Workstation folks (WRKSYS::D_FALCO,
product manager) regarding DECtalk Software on the Alpha machines. They might be
able to provide you with direction.

| As a point of clarification. Digital used to have a product called
DECalert (you'll see some references here and there) that combined
serveral DECtalk systems into a comprehensive voice and speaking
platform that was an excellent add-on to VCS/PCM systems. I've
installed at least 4 such systems.
The system was started as part of the new ventures group, with the
intent to make it a product or let it die within four yours. Sometime
during 1991 or 1992 (I think) we decided to drop the project, and sold
it in its entirety to a Mass. based company called Target. At least
one of the original DECalert support people went with it. He was let go
after a year.
The product was a little pricey, and never made into a full formal
product (some bit-wise setup parameters had to be caclulated by hand
still). I don't know if the product is still listed as an DEC part
number to be delivered by third-party. The part number include lots of
hardware (dectalks, racks, and terminal server), software, and bundled
training and delivery services. The last time I dealt with Target, the
training and delivery services were non-existant. Luckily, I was
familiar enough with the product to get it working. The code will only
work on VMS systems, not good if you are proposing PCM on Digital UNIX.
The code will not work on Alpha systems and has not been tested (TO MY
KNOWLEDGE) on any VAX system running anything later that 6.1.
You're welcome to check on availability, but be aware of the comments
above. Also be aware that there my be technical limitations on using
DECtalk units on non-US teleco systems.
If you have any further questions, please send me mail and I will see
what I can do.
