221.0. "1.1 CONSOLE EXTRACT WORK?" by CVG::TOMASWICK (Joe - VMScluster Validation/aka CVG) Tue Mar 22 1994 22:31

	I have tried doing a CONSOLE EXTRACT SYSTEMNAME/OUT=FOO.FOO/SINCE=TIME
It just seems to loop and eat CPU time. Console 1.1 ON VAX/VMS. Should this
work?

    Joe,

       Yes it should work. You're making the same mistake that I made;
    You need to use the /NOEVENTS qualifier to get just the console data.
    Please note. however, that this is being changed to work using the
    syntax which you've used. The latest kit with this new change in it
    should be available within a day or two.

       As for the looping, it could be a problem. I've noticed that the
    response time on VMS could be better.

Dave,

	It looks like it's broken. I have tried /noevent, leaving off the
/since & /output qualifiers. It just sits there and does nothing...for
hours.

221.3Try next kitZENDIA::DBIGELOWInnovate, Integrate, EvaporateWed Mar 23 1994 19:3714
    Joe,

       OK. there's a new kit being built and it should be ready tomororw.
    Can you install it and let us know what happens? I'll copy the kit
    over tho the US and let you know where it is.

       In the meantime, you can look in console$logfiles:*.log for a file
    having the system name imbedded in the filename. There are actually 3
    files for each system. The one without reference to the time nor evets
    is the one you want. It's straight ascii which can examine. However,
    don't edit this file, as the other 2 files have record pointers to this
    file.

	I have tried extracting with the DCL command and also from the C3
display. All I get is an empty file. If I specify /events I do get events
in the file but still no console log data.

Joe,

  Are you trying to extract new data, i.e. data logged after installing the
new kit, or old stuff? We did have a problem with logging which could have
caused your problem if you are looking at old data. If not, could you back up
your log files and copy them to OPG:: mail me when its done.

  Oh yes, can you do the copy after tonite, OPG clears out its default DECnet
account on fridays, so it will get lost, also, I wont be in the office to
take a look at it until wednesday.

Cheers,
Phil

Phil,

      It must have been old data because EXTRACT is working now.

Thanks,
Joe

221.8I think it is still a problem...BELLS::SYSTEMA wave without a shore...Thu Apr 28 1994 12:5517
Hi,

I've just installed PCM for the first time (the just announced V1.1 kit)
and upgraded from my VCS environment. ALl went well until I tried to
do a CONSOLE EXTRACT (even of new data since the installation) and
I get the same problem as mentioned in the base note. I have tried
it with and without the /EVENTS - /NOEVENTS qualifiers but it
doesn't seem to make any difference - it just loops endlessly eating
CPU time. (I guess I should also say that my environment is a VAXstation
4000-90, VMS V6.1 and Motif V1.2)

I know I can read the ASCII log file mentioned in the previous replies
but this is a major pain. Any more ideas?

Thanks,
Martin
